It’s the best deal in television, and in some ways the most antediluvian. Get a TV, stick a digital antenna on it, and boom! You can watch a bunch of shows, on a bunch of channels, for free! Free? Over the air? Get outta here! Who does that?
Well, more and more of us do in an era of pricy cable bundles, cord-cutters, and cord-nevers, as folks start to take advantage of a digital transformation already underway, a transformation about to get a good goose (for good or ill) thanks to the FCC.
Last week, the FCC likely unleashed a wave of consolidations among local broadcasters when it voted to end ‘70s-era media cross-ownership rules. And the FCC also gave final approval to Atsc 3.0, a set of new digital broadcast standards that will allow you to, among much else, watch shows on mobile phones, have truly interactive programming, and (oh,...

Midway through the Sundance film festival, I dropped by at the top of Main Street for Matthew Lessner‘s sophomore film, the Slamdance preemed Automatic at Sea – a hypotonic, elliptically constructed voyage or vaca pic that if I had to describe in one sentence is an aesthetically translucid piece of avant-garde cinema.

Blake Shelton is feeling inspired.
The “I’ll Name the Dogs” singer opens up to Et about his “happy” new album, Texoma Shore, and how he managed to catch his entire team by surprise with its quick turnaround.
“I had no plans of putting out an album this year at all,” says Shelton, whose last full length was released in May of 2016. “I planned on still being in the middle of releasing music off If I’m Honest, and that was the plan. That was the label’s plan and the manager’s plan, and I called one day and said, ‘Hey guys, when this current single runs its course, screw it. Let’s come out with a new album.'"
Shelton admits that it’s a far cry from his usual process, which often requires a nudge from his team to get back to work in the studio.

One big happy family!
Blake Shelton is opening up about bringing girlfriend Gwen Stefani, her kids and her whole family home to Oklahoma -- including during last week's grand opening of his new restaurant, Ole Red.
"It's been a lot of fun for me to be the one to get to expose them to this -- out in the country," Shelton told Et on Friday. "They love it so much, her entire family. And when I say her family, I mean all of them. I'm talking about the kids, the mom, the dad, the brother. There's times when we've had holiday gatherings, and I'm talking about 30-plus family members from her side, from my side."
"We have so much fun," he continued, joking: "I don't think you should be able to have that much fun. It's probably not legal in California."

Who knew coloring could so spooky?! From horror writer and illustrator Alan Robert comes The Beauty of Horror II: Ghouliana's Creepatorium, a new coloring book from Idw Publishing. As the title suggests, this coloring book is the continuation of Ghouliana's attempts to get colorers to unleash her fiendish spell, and we have release details and information on when and where you can meet Robert at autograph signings.
Press Release: New York, NY (September 19, 2017) - Life of Agony's Alan Robert has established himself as a prolific horror illustrator & writer over the last several years. Since 2010, Robert has created several award-winning titles through Idw Publishing (Crawl to Me, Killogy, Wire Hangers, The Shunned One). However, nothing would prepare him for the wild success of his 2016 breakout hit The Beauty of Horror: A GOREgeous Coloring Book. Nerdist hailed it as being "The World's Creepiest Adult Coloring Book" and it was Idw's #2 top-selling book last year.

From the announcement:
The National Film Archive has concluded an important contract with distribution company Janus Films which opens the road to expending knowledge of Czech classic films in all of North America.

There’s still so much we don’t know about director J. A. Bayona’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. One of the things I’m most excited about, though, is the return of Jeff Goldblum’s Ian Malcolm. The tagline for the film is even one of his lines from the original movie, “Life Finds a Way.”
Today we have a collection of cool photos from the set of the film for you to check out. They come from the Instagram account jurassic_world2018 and they feature some pretty cool stuff that I think fans will like... if they choose to look at them. I won’t say what they are as they do tease some plot details. You can scroll through the images on the embeds below.
The movie also Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard as Owen Grady and Claire Dearing. We'll also see the return of Bd Wong‘s Dr. Henry Wu.

Hey Wha Happened?! It's Chris Feil's weekly soundtrack series!
Christopher Guest’s A Mighty Wind begins with the death of a music producer, so it makes sense that the film ruminates on a supposedly dead musical genre. Folk music is a fit for Guest’s idiosyncratic eye, with the nuances in musicality or artistic personalities making easy fodder for his world of self-serious oddballs. Wind explores the breadth of the folk genre in three distinct groups: the narrative-based acoustics of The Folksmen, the chearfully disposed harmonies of The New Main Street Singers, and the placid romanticism of duo Mitch and Mickey. Though the film plays these characters with typical Guest behavioral farce, it does take their music seriously...

Retro vibes underscore the remarkable production design work on “The Crown,” “Stranger Things,” “Westworld,” “A Series of Unfortunate Events,” and “Hairspray Live!,” which all share the same goal: to humanize their worlds with imagination and relatability.
In “The Crown,” Queen Elizabeth II (Claire Foy) endures a rite of passage inside and outside the palace that offers personal and political challenges; In “Stranger Things,” ’80s suburbia contains a mirror-image dark side. In “Westworld,” the allure of a western adult theme park cracks open violence and hate. In “A Series of Unfortunate Events,” three orphan children persevere despite being passed around from one bizarre home to another. And in “Hairspray Live!,” idealistic Tracy Turnblad (Maddie Baillio) upends segregated Baltimore by winning a dance contest.
“The Crown”
Oscar-winning production designer Martin Childs (“Shakespeare in Love”) utilized showrunner Peter Morgan’s sense of dramatic movement and sharp dialogue to make the private world of Queen Elizabeth II more intimate.

Last week, we had one of those delightful father/daughter days when Adriane and I went diving for Funko. "The cheapest way to survive is to subsist entirely on appetizers. If you're luck enough to get access to free parties throughout the day..." We've been covering the Sundance Film Festival for 11 years, and I adore the festival, but it's not always the most inviting place especially if you don't have proper access. This year, Vimeo hired "self-described 'struggling' Staff Picked documentarian" John Wilson to make a video about his experience at the festival - without any access. Suffice it to say, he makes an amusing doc that mocks the festival and the absurdity of everything, yet also finds the good in it. "Wandering up and down Main Street, remarking on the blend of commercialism and exclusivity, he paints a pretty pallid picture of festival life and the forces that dominate it." It's worth watching for a good life and a totally different look at Sundance. Original description from Vimeo:...

If you’ve gone shopping for a television lately, you are likely aware that 4K resolution (often billed as “Ultra HD”) is no longer a thing of the future – it’s here. Yet while higher resolution has made its way to becoming a standard feature in affordable consumer panels, a great deal of content is still being broadcast or streamed at 1080 (commonly referred to as HD).
For streaming giants like Netflix and Amazon, there is a mandate to get ahead of the curve, with both companies already making select content available to customers in 4K. Both subscription services are also investing billions in building libraries of original programming and, for the last two years, have required that shows like “House of Cards” be shot using one of a handful of cameras that were suitable for narrative TV and could handle native 4K image capturing.

The world of nonfiction filmmaking continues to evolve along with its increasingly affordable, professional, and portable equipment. It’s inspired more directors take on the challenging task of shooting a film by themselves — essentially, operating sound and camera while directing.
“I was still a student at Nyu when I started to shoot ‘Hooligan Sparrow,'” said Nanfu Wang about her Oscar-shortlist documentary about a Chinese activist fighting for women’s rights. “I couldn’t afford hiring anyone; the thought didn’t even occur to me. I checked out some equipment from the school and went back to China by myself.”
For a new generation of filmmakers, this freedom also shapes the subjects and type of films they make. In the case of “Hooligan Sparrow,” Wang became part of a small group of activists traveling the country while evading Chinese authorities. The film has an intimacy as the viewer, like Wang,...

This week on ABC’s Once Upon a Time, not a whole lot of current storyline got moved forward, though we did get fresh insight into David’s father and the difficult decisions he made back in the day. Regina, meanwhile, invited the Wish Realm’s Robin to steal her heart, with meh results.

Jim Frohna has shot every season of Amazon’s “Transparent,” making him the natural pick for series creator Jill Soloway to hire for her new series “I Love Dick,” which will be premiere on Amazon in May.
While the approach to shooting a series and a feature-length movie can be completely different, Frohna says that with both of Soloway’s Amazon series, each season is treated like a five-hour film. By creating a shooting environment where the actors are free to experiment and the Dp adjusts to what is happening on set, Frohna has brought an indie film approach to match Soloway’s intimate and humorous stories.
The pilot of “I Love Dick” is live on Amazon now and while the Dp was at Sundance for a sneak peak of three episodes he caught up with IndieWire to discuss how he shot the new series.

A Montana rancher, a Kansas farmer and a Louisiana commercial fishermen might not necessarily fit our stereotype of environmental activist, but as the new documentary “Rancher, Farmer, Fisherman” shows the drastic changes to the earth’s environment are directly affecting the professions these men love. In this epic documentary, based on best-selling author Miriam Horn’s book, co-directors Susan Froemke, John Hoffman and Beth Aala had to rely on three different cinematographers to capture the three men’s stories and the stunning landscapes they call their office.
Cinematographer Bob Richman’s work was largely focused on the capturing the footage shot of ranching in Montana, while DPs Buddy Squires and Thorsten Thielow were tasked with shooting in Kansas and Louisiana.
IndieWire recently caught up with Richman to learn about how he approached capturing the majesty of “Big Sky” country and the life of a rancher.

To be at Sundance this year was a discombobulating and disorienting experience. And it wasn’t just the blizzard conditions and the altitude that affected me. The current political environment seemed to touch every conversation and infuse films with unexpected layers of meaning. There was a sense of uncertainty in the air coupled with a desire to be engaged, which was demonstrated by an enthusiastic turnout for the Women’s March down Park City’s Main Street.

Sundance is over and the prizes are won. People have dispersed to their homes and the realities that await them there.
This was a Sundance like no other I can remember, and I have attended every single one since 1986! The cold was extreme; and the political engagement and disgust was extreme. Not only did we have the Inauguration the first day, but the Women’s March the second day had probably 6,000 people marching and on that day the first of many deplorable executive orders (this one against women of the world and their control over their own bodies) began flying off the desk of our current president, who has continued to issue at least one every day, each one more despicable than the previous. Politics and women took center stage.

This first feature of Kirsten Tan premiered in Sundance ‘17 World Cinema Dramatic Competition. Its provenance is Singapore but it takes place in Thailand. It continued onward to the Hivos Tiger Competition at Iffr (R’dam).
The thrill of interviewing here in Sundance is that you see a film; you have an impression and while it is still fresh you meet the filmmakers without having much time for any research or reflection. And then you get to see them again as “old friends” when you meet again in Rotterdam.
As Kirsten, her producer Weijie Lai and I sat down at the Sundance Co-op on Main Street here in Park City, I really had little idea of where the interview would take us, somewhat analogously to her film in which an architect, disenchanted with life in general, being put aside as “old” in his own highly successful architectural firm and in a stale relationship with his wife,...

The 2017 Sundance Film Festival was one for the record books. Between protestors, hackers and Mother Nature, the 33-year-old event has rarely seen itself defending itself on so many fronts. Things came to a head on the first Saturday of the festival — traditionally the busiest day of the 11-day event — when thousands of activists shut down Park City’s historic Main Street, the hub of fest activities, to promote women’s rights and protest the inauguration of Donald Trump as the 45th President of the United States the day before. Call it coincidence — or not — but later that...read more...

There are many different possible takeaways from the 2017 edition of the Sundance Film Festival, but the following is one of them: This is the year that it can be definitively said that Sundance has grown too big for Park City. I’ve been here every year since 1985 and so have witnessed every stage of the growth of both the festival and the town. It’s easy to be nostalgic about the early days, when you could find a parking space on Main Street anytime, most of the screenings were at the Egyptian, the awards ceremony was held in a hotel...

What drives a man to surf down an avalanche of 100 feet of water? It’s a question Academy Award-nominated and Emmy-winning director/producer Rory Kennedy explores in her portrait of legendary surfer Laird Hamilton, which will premiere at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival.
“Take Every Wave: The Life of Laird Hamilton” includes incredible cinematography of Hamilton’s death-defying surfing, but the film is also an intimate look at the life of the man who became the legend. It’s a film that forced Kennedy into a wide array of shooting circumstances, requiring different techniques and equipment to capture the surfer’s story.
Kennedy is at Sundance for the film’s premiere and will be stopping by the Canon Creative Studio on Main Street in Park City to talk with IndieWire about shooting her latest film, which you can watch on Facebook Live.

From a practical standpoint, the 2017 Sundance Film Festival was a pileup of headaches: The box office got hacked, a power outage forced the cancellation of several screenings, and a massive blizzard wouldn’t stop dumping snow on Main Street. It all took place under the menacing shadow of the presidential inauguration, which no amount of valiant marching could undo.
However, an assessment of the U.S. Sundance narratives throughout this year’s program reveal one of its best in years. Many of the highlights from the 2017 lineup set the stage for a set of new American movies focused on the challenges of unification — and, more specifically, how they stem from family bonds tested by clashing values. Some of the more prominent titles provide a barometer for American society’s greatest anxieties, as well as what it might take chart a path forward.
Sundance’s biggest sale struck a particularly topical note.

Streaming platforms like Netflix have allowed documentary films and series to reach a far wider audience than ever before. But what does it mean for documentary filmmakers when those platforms demand content be shot in 4K and on specific cameras?
These are the exact circumstances cinematographers Ben Bloodwell and Bryan Donnell faced when they were hired to shoot the new Netflix series, “Hot Girls Wanted: Turned On,” an episode of which will premiere this week at the Sundance Film Festival.
How does 4K change the workflow, budget and aesthetic approach documentary filmmakers take in shooting nonfiction? That’s the discussion IndieWire will have with the two DPs when they stop by the Canon Creative Studio on Main Street in Park City.
Also joining the discussion is Dp Alan Jacobsen, who shot “Strong Island,” a documentary that will be looking for distribution after it premieres in competition at Sundance on Tuesday.

Bryan Fogel’s “Icarus” starts off like a Morgan Spurlock documentary as the director, a competitive amateur cyclist, explores what will happen if he follows Lance Armstrong’s performance enhancing drug (PEDs) regimen. Can he vastly improve his cycling speed, while also passing drug tests, just like Armstrong did?
His guide through this journey is Grigory Rodchenkov, the Russian scientist who runs Russia’s Olympic Ped testing lab. What Fogel doesn’t know is that Rodchenkov is the key player in President Putin’s secret efforts to dope Russian athletes and is about to become the center of storm of controversy. What’s most fascinating about Fogel’s film is how, mid-way through its already fascinating plot, it changes gears and becomes a completely different movie as Fogel finds himself in middle of a huge story and his coach/friend finds himself in danger.
