Western movie star John Wayne and classic Hollywood actor Lauren Bacall combined their efforts for 1976’s The Shootist. The film required them to demonstrate a certain uneasy chemistry that blossoms over the course of the runtime. However, Bacall had a real issue with how Wayne couldn’t stop spitting on the set, which really got on the actor’s last nerve.

Wayne personally recommended hiring Bacall for The Shootist after they worked together on 1955’s Blood Alley. It tells the story of Capt. Tom Wilder (Wayne) after Chinese Communists capture his ship. Meanwhile, Bacall plays Cathy Grainger, a medical missionary’s daughter.
The Shootist follows an older gunfighter named J.B. Books (Wayne), who has an infamous reputation that precedes him. However,...

Movie star John Wayne stepped behind the camera for The Alamo, but not quite for the reasons that one would expect. Similar to many other actors, he pretended not to care about what the critics thought, although their words hurt more than he let on. Wayne directed The Alamo because he didn’t think he was attractive enough to continue his career as an actor into his older years.

Wayne originally started in Hollywood as a prop man for Fox, where he met legendary filmmaker John Ford. Next, he had the opportunity to work on productions, ultimately landing in front of the camera as an actor. There, he managed to capture the hearts of moviegoing audiences across the country.

The second entry in Howard Hawks’ Rio Bravo trilogy is a virtual remake, ostensibly more playful and less a riposte to High Noon than the (better, let’s face it) original. Still a fun ride with Wayne and Mitchum having an obviously swell time in their only screen pairing, despite the fact that Wayne had Mitchum fired off of Blood Alley a decade earlier. Filming began in late 1965 but the film wasn’t released until 1967. On the heels of the flops Man’s Favorite Sport? and Red Line 7000, it was the hit Hawks needed to stay in the game.

Image Source: Getty / Sunset Boulevard It's hard to believe it's almost been 62 years since James Dean passed away. The Rebel Without a Cause actor was only 24 years old when he was killed in a car accident in Cholame, CA, on Sept. 30, 1955. James and mechanic Rolf Wütherich had been driving the actor's Porsche 550 Spyder to a car race in Salinas, CA, when they were struck by a Ford Tudor, which was driven by 23-year-old Donald Turnupseed, at an intersection on CA 41. "[Turnupseed] just didn't see Dean coming until the last, split second, and it was too late," Chp officer Ernie Tripke told the La Times in 2005. "We weren't qualified to say that [Dean] was deceased, but I think he was darn close to it." Rolf suffered a broken jaw and leg, while Donald had "very minor injuries" and was not detained. James died at the scene of the accident. Image Source: Getty / Bettmann...

John Wayne plays a German sea captain in a film that goes out of its way to create a favorable image of our former enemy, with hardly a Nazi flag or even a German accent in sight. Wayne and his co-star Lana Turner are as Teutonic as Blondie and Dagwood, yet the film works as a basic adventure – we like the charismatic star, and the sea chase format guarantees extra interest.

Now a successful producer, John Wayne tries a big budget action picture with an anti-Communist theme. It’s The Alamo on a ferryboat, set in the far East where the locals are a hungerin’ for Freedom. Wayne is an apolitical adventurer who just feels like savin’ Chinese and kissin’ Lauren Bacall. Ace director William Wellman holds it together — barely.

The cruel loss of legendary cinematic figures continues into the new year with the death of Anita Ekberg in Italy at age 83. The precise cause of death is not known at this time but she had suffered from a long illness. Ekberg was Swedish by birth but was often mistaken as a native of Italy because of her close association with Fellini and his films. She was named Miss Sweden as a teenager and competed in the Miss Universe contest before her statuesque figure ensured a career in show business during an era when full-bosomed sex sirens were all the rage. Hollywood studios were particularly on the lookout for the next exotic European beauty and Ekberg filled the bill perfectly. She slogged through bit parts uncredited in major studio productions before landing a prominent role opposite John Wayne and Lauren Bacall in the 1955 hit "Blood Alley" (in...

Anita Ekberg, the Swedish pageant queen whose beauty bewitched director Federico Fellini in La Dolce Vita, died in a hospital outside of Rome at the age of 83. Known in some gossip rags as "The Iceberg," Ekberg was known as one of the sex symbols of Hollywood, and played opposite a number of Hollywood stars throughout her career like Audrey Hepburn in War and Peace and Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin in Four for Texas. She also toured with Bob Hope on a number of U.S.O. tours and starred in a number of movies with him. And long before the uproar over Scarlett Johansson's casting as the lead in Ghost in the Shell, Ekberg played a Chinese woman, Wei Ling in Blood Alley, for which she won a Golden Globe award in 1956.Ekberg was born in Malmo, Sweden in 1931, and grew up as one of eight children. "Anita Ekberg, immortalized by her performance in Federico Fellini's 1960 film La Dolce Vita, died Sunday near Rome," reports the Afp. "She was 83." From TCM: "Coming to America after winning the Miss Sweden beauty competition in 1950, Ekberg soon secured herself a contract with Universal Pictures and began a string of appearances in such features as Blood Alley (1955), Hollywood or Bust (1956) and the historical epic War and Peace (1956). Often eclipsing her work on screen, however, were the alleged romantic liaisons with many of Hollywood's most powerful leading men, including Tyrone Power, Gary Cooper and Frank Sinatra. Sub-par genre pictures with titles like Sheba and the Gladiator (1959) were fast becoming Ekberg's stock-in-trade before Fellini cast the stunning actress in La Dolce Vita, instantly making her co-star Marcello Mastroianni an international superstar, but oddly, doing little to advance her career." » - David Hudson...

An Italian To Have and Have Not (Howard Hawks, USA, 1944). Art by Luigi Martinati.
Lauren Bacall, who left us last week after an astonishing 70 years of making movies, was one of the most beautiful women ever to grace a movie screen and the first golden age Hollywood star I ever fell for. With her unmistakeable features—those eyebrows, those lips—she must have been one of the easiest stars to capture in an illustration and thus a gift to poster artists. For most of her career, however, while she was never less than a star, she was rarely a leading lady, playing co-star to her great love Humphrey Bogart in four of her first five movies, then to Charles Boyer, Marilyn Monroe and Betty Grable, Kirk Douglas, John Wayne, Rock Hudson, Gregory Peck and so on. As a result, she rarely appeared solo in posters and is often dwarfed by her male co-stars.

One of the leading ladies of Hollywood’s Golden Age died today after a stroke. The sultry, fiery Lauren Bacall was 89. MSNBC’s Thomas Robert broke the news in a tweet, and the Bogart estate has confirmed it. She was famous for starring — onscreeen and off — with Humphrey Bogart in such 1940s classics as The Big Sleep, To Have and Have Not, Dark Passage and Key Largo. In one of Hollywood’s great love stories, they married in 1945 and stayed together until his death in 1957. Legendary screen siren Lauren Bacall died of a massive stroke at her home in Los Angeles on Tuesday morning.
Her death was confirmed by Robbert de Klerk, the co-managing partner of the Humphrey Bogart Estate with her son Stephen Bogart. In a statement he said: "She passed away peacefully earlier today in New York."
Her daughter, Leslie Bogart, said the family was not sharing any additional information at this time.
The 89-year-old actress has appeared in more than sixty films over her career and was best known for her distinctive smoky voice. Smart, sultry and witty - she was a beauty with brains and a devastating wit, always a highly assertive and sassy on screen presence who classed up every film she was in.

Hollywood has lost a second iconic voice in less than 24 hours. Lauren Bacall, star of screen, stage and television, passed away at the age of 89 Tuesday. Born Betty Joan Perske in the Bronx, New York in 1924, Bacall was discovered by director Howard Hawks' wife Nancy after she saw a photo of her in Vogue magazine. After flying her across the country for a screen test, Hawks transformed Betty into Lauren and cast her opposite Humphrey Bogart in his classic 1944 drama "To Have and Have Not." And, as they say, "a star was born." Bacall was a fixture of the golden age of Hollywood appearing on screen opposite Bogart, her first husband, several more times including films such as "The Big Sleep" (1946), "Dark Passage" (1947) and "Key Largo" (1948). She also starred alongside Marilyn Monroe in "How to Marry A Millionaire" (1953), with John Wayne in "Blood Alley" (1955), with Tony Curtis and Natalie Wood...

It was a show full of first-class Hollywood memorabilia on Wednesday’s Beverly Hills Pawn. The new episode featured a knife from Django Unchained, a dress from the Hitchcock classic Vertigo, but best of all we got to take a look at one very old Buddha. This large, gilt bronze, contemplative Buddha was sculpted during the Ming Dynasty and is approximately 450 years old. The statue had “co-starred” alongside the likes of John Wayne, Lauren Bacall, and Humphrey Bogart, having appeared in several movies, including The Maltese Falcon and Blood Alley. Unfortunately the seller and Yossi couldn’t agree on a price, but Yossi was willing to take it on consignment. We're fairly certain that someone will want to snatch up this handsome fella before long.
For anyone who missed this week's new episode, there are a few more chances to watch Bhp "Django and Dresses" this weekend. Check the schedule for more details.

Memorial Day 2011 is here and while we should all take time to thank a veteran and active servicemen and women, it also means for us TVphiles - lots of good programming. So either settle in with some popcorn or make sure your DVR is ready to go.
There are movie marathons. Syfy is busting out its greatest hits in the giant monster oeuvre on Friday, followed by "Star Trek" movies all weekend. TCM and AMC are showing nothing but military movies, including classics like "All Quiet on the Western Front," "From Here to Eternity" and "Patton."
If marathons are your thing, you've got everything from "Firefly" and "Doctor Who" to "House Hunters" and "How It's Made." And if you're a sports fan, while the NBA playoffs are on hiatus, you can still watch a ton of baseball, the 2011 French Open or the annual Memorial Day race the Indianapolis 500.

The title of Lee Server’s acclaimed 2002 biography, Robert Mitchum: Baby I Don’t Care (MacMillan), offers a perfect encapsulization of the eponymous actor: a hard-partying Hollywood Bad Boy who didn’t give a damn what moralizing finger-waggers thought of him, or what his peers in the movie business thought, or the press, or even the public. He was going to go his own way and to hell with you, and anyone positioning themselves to make strong objection was just as likely to get a punch in the nose as shown the actor’s broad back. He worked hardest at conveying the idea that the thing he did for a living – acting – was also the thing he cared least about; an impression that may have been his most convincing performance.
The Bad Boy part of Mitchum’s reputation was honestly come by. As a youth, he’d been booted from more than one school,...
