- Two GIs haven fallen in love with "Fräuleins", decide to stay in Germany and open a typically American drugstore in the center of the small town where their girlfriends live.
- Two American GIs, brothers Clark and Jimmy (Sydney and Charles Chaplin Jr.) plan to return to the US after their service in Germany. But they have fallen in love with two "Fräuleins", Eva (Eva Kerbler) and Suzi (Paola Loew), who live in the small town of Krähwinkel. The guys decide to stay and establish a typically American drugstore in the center of the town. They initially meet much sympathy with the locals, especially with the mayor (Paul Westermeier) and the girls' fathers, pharmacist Wagner (Paul Henckels) and clock maker Merzheim (Carl Wery). So the new store is established with a grand opening party, but the next day clients stay away - the American way seems too unusual and modern for the taste of the conservative provincial customers. Meanwhile Eva's brother Toni (Harald Maresch) has arrived. As a prisoner of war he had been in a US camp, escaped and spent several years in the USA as an illegal alien. Things get complicated because Toni is Suzi's old sweetheart. Tailor Lüttgen is very keen on being friends with everybody and provides Toni with a formal suit that Clark has not claimed. When Clark suddenly needs the suit for an official ceremony, Lüttgen is devastated but has to ask Toni to take off the suit during the festivities. In the election of a new mayor Toni is victorious and now has to deal with issuing permits for his rival Clark's business while the small-town folks demand the removal of the drugstore. Clark's sister Olive (Anneliese Kaplan) comes for a visit and brings a French friend, Florence (Christiane Jansen). Clark is impressed by Florence who soon offers him to go to Paris with her. Clark is at a crossroads: Germany or France?
