Our favorite first responders aren’t going anywhere. 9-1-1 has been renewed for its eighth season. The news comes just two days ahead of the drama’s 100th episode, airing on April 4. It’ll be the first episode with the entire 118 back together, with the first three covering Athena (Angela Bassett) and Bobby’s (Peter Krause) honeymoon, which turned into a major cruise ship disaster. In “Buck Bothered and Bewildered,” now back on shore, Athena will be dealing with her son, Harry, finding himself in trouble with the law. Meanwhile, Buck (Oliver Stark) grows envious as Eddie (Ryan Guzman) forms a close bond with someone else, and the 118 rescue a woman who’s stuck on receiving a rose at an iconic mansion 9-1-1, created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Tim Minear, also stars Aisha Hinds (Hen), Kenneth Choi (Chimney), Jennifer ...

When he debuted in 1939’s Whiz Comics #2 as Captain Marvel, Shazam quickly won the hearts of readers. The character regularly outsold competitors Superman and Batman, thanks to his whimsical premise and his fantastic rogues gallery. Readers returned month after month to see Captain Marvel battle mad scientist Doctor Sivana, magical baddie Black Adam, and the Monster Society of Evil, led by telepathic space worm Mister Mind. So even though Shazam! featured a variation of Doctor Savana and Black Adam stars in his own solo film, producers of Shazam! Fury of the Gods had plenty of comic book choices when it came to choosing the next baddie to battle Billy Batson and his super-powered family.

As Venice Film Festival chief Alberto Barbera continues to see films and tinker with his selection before announcing the Lido lineup next week, several high-profile titles have emerged as either locked in or highly likely to be launching from the Lido.
As previously anticipated by Variety, U.S. studios and streamers are set to be disembarking at the fest in full force. Warner Bros. will be launching steamy psychological thriller “Don’t Worry Darling,” which is Olivia Wilde’s second directorial effort and stars Florence Pugh and Harry Styles. The pic is one of two movies starring the latter pop star to come out this fall (the other being Amazon Studios’ “My Policeman”).
Focus Features will be on the Lido with Todd Field’s “Tár,” which teams the “In the Bedroom” director with Cate Blanchett as the fictional Lydia Tár, one of the world’s greatest conductors and the first female...

Well...that was an episode of broadcast television.
9-1-1 Season 5 Episode 14 was a bit of a mixed bag. And the bag was mostly rotten.
There is no accounting for why 9-1-1 is so insistent on trying to change a series that didn't need changing.
The 118, Maddie, and Athena are why 9-1-1 is one of the most popular television shows. We've had five seasons of these lovable, flawed individuals worming their way into our hearts and bringing us so much joy over the years.
But for some reason, this season has gotten away from that and has given us way too many outsiders. And look, shows need characters to come in and out and spice things up. No one is saying that they should never have guest actors and create fresh new characters to challenge the status quo.
But you have to use them right. You have to use them in...

When we phoned up Pete Townshend last week at his new home in the English countryside, our only real goal was to talk about the Who’s upcoming American tour where the band will be paired with local symphonies. Before we knew it, an hour had passed and we’d covered everything from the Neil Young–Joe Rogan spat to the inflation crisis, the unlikelihood of a new Who record or solo LP, the brilliant use of his music on Freaks and Geeks, and his hatred of NFTs.

“9-1-1” is getting its first spinoff this year, but series co-creator Tim Minear says there could still be more on the way.
“The idea is to have the brand grow in a way that feels organic and natural,” Minear said at the Television Critics Association press tour on Tuesday. But when asked if he wanted to “Dick Wolf the show” into a “Chicago Fire” or “Law & Order”-style franchise, Minear added: “Hell yeah.”
“9-1-1: Lone Star,” which stars Rob Lowe and Liv Tyler as first responders in Austin, Texas, is nominally a spinoff of the flagship drama starring Peter Krause and Angela Bassett, but the two shows don’t intersect at all — at least not yet. Minear said the creative approach to the two dramas were almost complete opposites.

Wildlife documentary filmmakers Mark Deeble and Victoria Stone spent 25 years living in the East African bush to prepare for their nature odyssey “The Elephant Queen,” the first film from Apple TV+.
Here’s the official synopsis, courtesy of Apple TV+: “The Elephant Queen is Athena, a majestic elephant matriarch, who leads her family across an unforgiving, yet cinematic natural landscape made up of grasslands and woodlands, dotted with seasonal waterholes. The elephants share their home with a cast of supporting character species who provide texture and richness to the elephants’ ecosystem — from a toenail height perspective. Athena, as leader of her herd, anticipates the coming dry season and knows there are lean times ahead. As the waterholes dry up, she has no choice but to take her family on a treacherous journey across even more foreboding landscapes, as the majestic creatures seek refuge until the rains fall again.”

9-1-1 returned for the back half of its second season on Monday in the most 9-1-1 way possible, delivering a facelift gone wrong, an out-of-water shark attack and a (potentially) fatal final twist.
Let’s begin with a quick summary of the night’s events: Athena and Maddie worked together to reunite two kidnapped children with their parents, though both had bigger drama awaiting them at home. In Athena’s case, her parents were visiting — one of whom is not a fan of her being engaged to a white man Bobby.

Get ready to learn how to say “what the hell just happened?” in Japanese. “Neon Genesis Evangelion,” one of the most acclaimed — and straight up weird — works in anime history, will be available to stream globally for the first time when it debuts on Netflix in 2019.
The announcement came during Netflix’s Anime Lineup Presentation, held Tuesday in Tokyo.
Produced by Gainax and Tatsunoko Production, “Neon Genesis Evangelion” originally aired on TV Tokyo from October 1995 to March 1996. Set in the far-future year of 2015, the show tracks a war between humans, defended by pilots who control giant bio-machines called “Evangelions,” and aliens called “Angels.” Drawing imagery from Kabbalah, Christianity and Judaism, “Evangelion” is particularly celebrated — and notorious — for its insane ending. The uninitiated can watch the teaser trailer above.

When you think of police procedurals on TV, you don’t always think “Emmy.” But that could all change this year thanks to Angela Bassett‘s performance as police officer Athena Grant on Fox’s “9-1-1.” The veteran actress received her fourth career Emmy nomination last year for her guest turn on “Master of None” after previously competing for “The Rosa Parks Story” (2002), “American Horror Story: Coven” (2014) and “American Horror Story: Freak Show” (2015). The moment that has been predicted for almost two years now came to fruition in the latest chapter of Arrow.
Arrow Season 6 Episode 16 officially bid farewell to one of the show's original cast members as Thea Queen took off into the sunset, so to speak.
Despite that this has been in the cards for quite some time, what an ending huh? It struck a chord big time even though we knew that Willa Holland was being set up to leave Arrow Season 6.
Let's get through this Thanatos Guild situation. I didn't care much for it other than that it allowed Thea to suit up again and kick some ass with her fellow heroes.

Before he even knew what a crush was, Mike Kaplan had one on 1940s Hollywood star Jane Powell. Decades later, he got a chance to meet her
I'm not sure: either Jane Powell made me fall in love with the movies, or I fell in love with Jane Powell and the movies followed. In either case, I was six and she was my first crush before I knew what a crush was.
The year was 1948, the movie was Luxury Liner. Powell was 19, and played a spunky adolescent stowaway on a cruise ship. Her father, George Brent, is the captain, and when he discovers her aboard, she's made to scrub decks, peel potatoes and then play cupid to the various shipboard romances. She was cute, vivacious and captivating. The luxury liner might never have left the soundstages, but Powell convinced you that you were sailing across the ocean, because she sparkled with sincerity and intelligence.

B-movie actor who could lay claim to having been the first Bond girl
The phrase "famous for being famous" could have been invented for Linda Christian, who has died aged 87. Her celebrity came from her marriages to the handsome film stars Tyrone Power and Edmund Purdom, and her liaisons with various wealthy playboys and bullfighters, rather than her somewhat limited acting ability.
Christian's extravagant, cosmopolitan lifestyle derived from her stunning beauty – she was dubbed "The Anatomic Bomb" by Life magazine – and her ability to speak fluent French, German, Dutch, Spanish, Italian and English. She was born Blanca Rosa Welter in Tampico, Mexico, the daughter of a Dutch executive at Shell, and his Mexican-born wife of Spanish, German and French descent. As the family moved around a great deal, living in South America, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, she gained a taste for globetrotting.
