- Cabot Young: You must have missed!
- Campbell: Naw, we just killed the same one twice!
- [takes aim and shoots Indian off his pony with one shot]
- Campbell: See what I mean?
- Capt. Roper: When you're in the grave, Beecher, it doesn't matter too much how you got there.
- Lt. Beecher: Well, I think it matters. I think it does.
- Capt. Roper: Write the War Department.
- Carla Forester: [Capt. Roper has surprised her by coming up behind her and clasping his hands around her waist] What makes you so sure of yourself?
- Capt. Roper: You.
- Carla Forester: What makes you so sure about me?
- Capt. Roper: The way you light a man's cigar.
- Capt. Roper: Symore!
- Symore: Yes, sir?
- Capt. Roper: I'm pulling out. Take care of those flowers.
- Symore: Yes, sir.
- Capt. Roper: If you don't, I'll dig them up and plant *you*.
- Symore: I know you will.
- Capt. Roper: And if I don't come back...
- Symore: You'll be back, captain. Only the good die young.
- Capt. Roper: [slight pause] In that case, I'd say I've got a long time.
- Symore: I'd say forever.
- Cabot Young: One of these days I'm gonna' take that little gray cap and knock it right off'n your head.
- Campbell: And you know somethin', Cabot? From that day on I'll be wearin' yours.
- Cabot Young: How did a decrepit old man like you ever get in the war?
- Campbell: Because all the smart young men like you was losing it.
- Capt. Roper: Did you fire that shot?
- Cabot Young: Yep!
- Capt. Roper: In any other place than this, I'd thank you.
- Cabot Young: In any other place, you wouldn't get the chance!
- Capt. Roper: Keep the gun!
