“One of the lessons of adulthood is disappointment,” says a bleary-eyed Abigail Pogrebin as she muses on her time in the original Broadway production of “Merrily We Roll Along,” Stephen Sondheim and Hal Prince’s notorious flop that ended their decades-long collaborative friendship and the subject of Lonny Price’s nostalgic documentary, “Best Worst Thing That Ever Could Have Happened,” which debuted at the New York Film Festival.
Price, (whom “Dirty Dancing” fans may recognize as the guy who put Baby in the corner), was part of the original cast of the musical. Based on the popular 1934 play by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, “Merrily” tells the life stories of its three main characters in reverse order; they start out bitter and jaded adults, and by the show’s end have reverted to hopeful and starry-eyed kids. Prince, the legendary Broadway producer and the first to combine producing with directing,...

The Girl Who Played With Fire (Music Box Films) Follow up to the hit The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo finds Lisabeth Salander (Noomi Rapace) and Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) joining forces once again as Blomkvist is about to break a story on Sweden’s sex trade, which leads unexpectedly to a dark secret from Elizabeth’s past. Starts off well, then quickly nose-dives into sensationalism and downright silliness, with a pair of villains who are straight out of a Roger Moore-era James Bond film. A real letdown for those of us who felt Dragon Tattoo had finally breathed life into the cinema’s long-stagnant genre of the thriller. Bonuses: English language track; Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.
The Killer Inside Me (IFC Films) Michael Winterbottom’s adaptation of Jim Thompson’s classic, and notorious, novel about the psychotic mind of a small town sheriff (Casey Affleck,...

CBS newsman-producer Leiser dies
NEW YORK -- Ernest Leiser, a pioneering foreign correspondent and producer for CBS News in the 1950s who helped expand the unit's documentary and news coverage in the 1960s, has died. He was 81. Leiser died Nov. 26 in his sleep of an apparent heart attack. He joined CBS News in 1953 as a correspondent for the science series Adventure and then became a part of the network's elite corps of foreign correspondents, which included Eric Sevareid and Charles Collingwood. Mainly, he reported from Europe, where the ruling Communists in Hungary jailed him briefly while he was covering the 1956 revolt. But Leiser gained most of his notoriety working behind the scenes. He started out co-producing such broadcasts as Eyewitness to History and coverage of the John F. Kennedy-Richard Nixon presidential campaign in 1960. Later, he made his mark helping to produce CBS News' continuous coverage of Kennedy's assassination in 1963. The network named him director of news in 1964 and then executive producer of CBS Evening News With Walter Cronkite, where he helped the show pass NBC's Huntley-Brinkley Report in the ratings.
