Move over James Jones — Leon Uris clobbers the big screen with a sprawling adaptation of his WW2 combat novel, loaded down with roles for promising young actors. This is the one where twice as much time is spent on love affairs than fighting. War may be hell, but if Mona Freeman, Nancy Olson, Dorothy Malone and Allyn McLerie are going to be there for comfort, sign me up.

Sheila Bond, the actress and dancer who won a Tony Award in 1953 for her performance in the Josh Logan musical Wish You Were Here, which featured a swimming pool built into the stage, has died. She was 90.
Bond died March 25, a few days after her birthday at her home in Manhattan, her niece, Sheri Smith, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Bond also played Judy Holliday's sister in George Cukor's The Marrying Kind (1952), appeared on Broadway opposite Sid Caesar in 1948's Make Mine Manhattan and stepped in as Lola for Gwen Verdon in the original 1955-57 staging of...

All sing the praises of Frank Borzage, a gentle director fully committed to the idea of romance in an imperfect world. Sally Eilers and James Dunn make a go of marriage, despite their personal flaws and difficulties with communication. It’s hard to believe that films of this vintage portray behaviors as sensitive as this.

The following is an essay featured in the anthology George Cukor - On/Off Hollywood (Capricci, Paris, 2013), for sale at www.capricci.fr.
The Film Society of Lincoln Center will be running a complete retrospective on the director, "The Discreet Charm of George Cukor," in New York December 13, 2013 - January 7, 2014. Many thanks to David Phelps, Fernando Ganzo, and Camille Pollas for their generous permission.
The Second-hand Illusion:
Notes on Cukor
Above: The Chapman Report (1962), A Life of Her Own (1950)
“There’s always something about them that you don’t know that you’d like to know. Spencer Tracy had that. In fact, they do all have that – all the big ones have it. You feel very close to them but there is the ultimate thing withheld from you – and you want to find out.” —George Cukor1
“Can you tell what a woman’s like by just looking at her?” —The Chapman Report...

Judy Holliday may have had a knack for playing the "dumb blonde," but she certainly was a cut above the rest.
Born Judith Tuvim in 1921, Holliday possessed an Iq of 172 -- like we said, she was no dummy. The Old Hollywood star rose to fame playing Billie Dawn in the stage and film adaptations of "Born Yesterday," for which she won Best Actress at the Academy Awards.
Through her films like "The Marrying Kind" and "Phffft!," the New York native embodied 1950s elegance in full-figured skirts, lace detailing and pristine updos. Sadly, Holliday died of breast cancer at the young age of 43 in 1965.
In honor of her birthday on June 21, we're taking a look back at her classic on-screen style.

In Sunday’s Downton Abbey season finale — set a year after last week’s episode — everything’s coming up roses. Well, except for the fact that yet another Crawley ends the episode pushing up daisies. Must one of them always be contrary?

Every year "Vanity Fair" publishes a list of the top 40 highest-earning players in Hollywood which includes both actors, producers and directors. Because I endeavor to be a good little feminist, I always skim the list to see how many broads make the cut (a disappointingly low six this year) and which of them dames I consider to be worthy of all that cash (sometimes one, maaaybe two). This year's list was particularly eyebrow wrinkling for me because the number one female earner in 2010 was That Lip Biter, she of the unwashed hair and the perfectly executed eye roll, Kristen Stewart. Here's the complete list of well-endowed (shut up) ladies:
1. Kristen Stewart--Estimated 2010 Earnings: $28.5 Million
2. Jennifer Aniston--Estimated 2010 Earnings: $24.5 Million
3. Angelina Jolie--Estimated 2010 Earnings: $23.5 Million
