In the 1970s, Elvis Presley was so bored with his career that he began to invent problems for himself. According to Priscilla Presley, he grew obsessed with the idea of cleaning up the streets, even going so far as to offer to “take care” of anyone who bothered her. Elvis himself rarely ventured into dangerous situations. Instead, he sent his bodyguards out to deal with his problems. One of his bodyguards spoke out against this behavior.
Elvis Presley put people in danger to seem ‘macho’
In 1976, Elvis welcomed his bodyguard Red West into his bedroom. Here, West found guns spread all over the floor and a list of people Elvis saw as a threat to the public.
“He had it all planned,” West said in the book Elvis: What Happened? by Steve Dunleavy. “He wanted myself and Dave Hebler and Dick Grob, the former cop, to go out and lure them,...

Actors Danny DeVito and Arnold Schwarzenegger, who shared the screen in ‘Twins’, had a reunion at the recently concluded 96th Academy Awards at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles.
They took to the stage to present the award for the Best Visual Effects to ‘Godzilla Minus One’ and Best Film Editing to the Christopher Nolan directorial ‘Oppenheimer’, reports ‘Variety’.
However, it was their jokes about ‘Batman’ that left the Oscars audience in splits.
“Arnold and I are presenting tonight together for a very obvious reason,” DeVito said.
“We’ve both tried to kill Batman.”
Schwarzenegger revealed to applause. DeVito played the Penguin in Tim Burton’s ‘Batman Returns’, where he faced off against Michael Keaton‘s Batman and Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman. Schwarzenegger, meanwhile, faced off against George Clooney’s Batman as the villainous Mr. Freeze in the critical flop ‘Batman and Robin’.

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito had a “Twins” reunion at the Oscars as they joined forces to present best visual effects to “Godzilla Minus One” and best film editing to “Oppenheimer.” But it was their jokes about Batman that stole the show and had the Oscars audience uproariously laughing.
“Arnold and I are presenting tonight together for a very obvious reason,” DeVito said.
“We’ve both tried to kill Batman!” Schwarzenegger revealed to applause.
DeVito played the Penguin in Tim Burton’s “Batman Returns,” where he faced off against Michael Keaton’s Batman and Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman. Schwarzenegger, meanwhile, faced off against George Clooney’s Batman as the villainous Mr. Freeze in the critical flop “Batman and Robin.” At the Oscars, Schwarzenegger said that his villain was defeated after Batman “used my one weakness against me,” which was Mr. Freeze’s love for his deceased wife.
“Oh. He threw me out a window!

Dakota Johnson’s Madame Web has been facing poor reception. It cast down fans with a confusing plot and bad execution. The film feels like a parody of comic characters and doesn’t do justice to extending the Spider-Man universe—according to many reviews given by top critics.
Madame Web tells the story of Cassandra Webb (a paramedic), whose psychic powers develop in the womb when her mother is bitten by a spider before dying.

Actor and stand-up comedian Marlon Wayans is known for his sitcom, The Wayans Bros. and films like Little Man and White Chicks. The actor is also known for his appearances in the Scary Movie franchise. While known mostly for his comedic roles, the actor also tried his hand at drama with Darren Aronofsky’s harrowing drama, Requiem for a Dream.
One of the most interesting bits of trivia for the comic and actor was that he was signed onto play Robin in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns. The dark sequel to 1989’s Batman initially planned to introduce Robin to the franchise, and Wayans would have a larger role in the threequel. However, plans reportedly fell through, and Wayans never played the role.

Alicia Silverstone is amazed that audiences are still interested in a 'Clueless' sequel. The 47-year-old actress played the role of Cher Horowitz in the 1995 coming-of-age comedy and loved how her reprisal of the part for a Super Bowl commercial led to fresh calls for a follow-up movie.Alicia told Variety: "I think people are talking about a (sequel) all the time at all times since the movie happened."Has it been 30 years yet? That always is a fun conversation. It's so lovely to see how people still love that movie. It's very nice."Silverstone's latest film is the Dutch comedy 'Krazy House' – which is set in the 1990s and follows a sitcom family whose lives are transformed when criminals arrive at their door – and she had an immediate interest in the unconventional plot from directors Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil. She recalled: "I...

Joel Schumacher's 1997 superhero flick "Batman & Robin" has often been considered by internet pundits to be one of the worst of all Hollywood blockbusters. A friend of mine once suggested that it would be better to watch "Batman & Robin" with a Spanish-language track and English subtitles, as that would make it feel more like a Mexican luchador film. If the film were about El Santo and Blue Demon instead of Batman and Robin, then perhaps it would have been more openly embraced. As it stands, "Batman & Robin" was a financial disappointment, making $235 million worldwide on a $125 million budget. That seems like a success, but one should recall the amount of advertising and marketing that went into a film of this size back in 1997.
One should also recall that "Batman & Robin" was widely derided, currently holding a mere 11% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In his review, Roger Ebert...

George Clooney doesn’t want to don the bat suit with the rubber nipples again. Of course, we kind of know this, as Clooney has been self-deprecatingly dissing his own performance in “Batman and Robin” and the movie itself, seemingly ever since it came out in 1997.
But obviously, as fans know by now, Clooney did briefly reprise the role at the end of Andy Muschietti’s “The Flash” film that came out earlier this year (and bombed hard), appearing as Bruce Wayne in what was a different dimension than Ezra Miller’s Flash was familiar with.

The DC Universe is abuzz with anticipation! Word on the street is that John Logan, the three-time Oscar-nominated genius behind hits like ‘Gladiator,’ ‘Skyfall,’ and ‘Hugo,’ is in discussions to write the screenplay for ‘The Brave and the Bold.’ If that doesn’t get you excited, I don’t know what will.
So, what’s the plot stirring in the DC pot? The studio is gearing up to delve into Bruce Wayne mentoring his son, Damian, grooming him to become Robin. Sounds riveting, right? The cherry on top? They’re taking cues from Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely’s renowned ‘Batman and Robin’ comic series. For all the comic enthusiasts out there, this is something to eagerly await.

Kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughn is no stranger to bringing high-concept comic book shenanigans to the silver screen. Still, he wonders if there’s a point where poor decisions, shortcuts, and oversaturation could create a fatigue even Hollywood’s comic book movie boom can’t defeat. Speaking with ScreenRant at New York City-Comic-Con, Vaughn let his discontent about the current state of comic book cinema be known.
“I genuinely don’t know what’s happening with the superhero [genre] in the sense that, I do think, maybe we all need a little bit of time off from it,” Vaughn said. “Maybe someone will make something so great that we will get excited again… Superhero films are films. It’s a film that has superheroes in it. I think what happened was that they became superheroes, and the film part wasn’t that important.”

“Kingsman” director Matthew Vaughn knows a thing or two about bringing comic books to life on the big screen as the filmmaker behind acclaimed outings such as “Kick-Ass” and “X-Men: First Class.” In a recent interview with ScreenRant, the director shared his thoughts on the current era of comic book movies. He said poor visual effects are negatively impacting superhero movies, while also sharing his belief that Marvel needs to take a “less is more” approach.

Los Angeles, June 16 (Ians) Andy Muschietti is officially suiting up to direct a new Batman film, ‘Variety’ can report exclusively. The film is one of several new DC Studios titles mapped out by its leaders James Gunn and Peter Safran earlier this year.
Muschietti, who’s behind this weekend’s superhero release ‘The Flash’, will direct ‘Batman: The Brave and the Bold’. The project is based on the comic series authored by Grant Morrison, who Gunn called ‘exceptionally influential’ on the DC Universe in January.
The comics, says ‘Variety’, imagine a ‘Bat family’ where Bruce Wayne’s biological son Damian serves as Robin to his dad’s Batman. Muschietti’s sister and creative partner Barbara will produce the project via their label Double Dream, alongside Gunn and Safran.

Alicia Silverstone isn’t shutting the door on the Dcu.
Twenty-six years after she played Batgirl in 1997’s “Batman and Robin,” the “Clueless” icon told IndieWire that she is open to reprising the role.
“If somebody wants me to play Batgirl, and they’re incredible, I’m in,” Silverstone told IndieWire during the Tribeca Film Festival while promoting horror film “Perpetrator.”
Writer-director Jennifer Reeder added, “I’m not done with her, now that I’ve got her close. I keep promising to make more films with her, which we will absolutely do. Maybe ‘Batgirl.'”

Christopher Nolan is a director who seems to like bringing actors with him from one movie to the next. Tom Hardy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Anne Hathaway got roles in multiple consecutive Nolan films, and legendary British thespian Michael Caine has gotten many brief appearances as well. Still, there are few actors who have worked with him as often as Cillian Murphy. It's a partnership that started with the 2005 film "Batman Begins," Nolan's notably serious and gritty reboot of the "Batman" film franchise.
Many decisions were made to distinguish that movie from what had come before with the series. Nolan and company dispensed with the over-the-top and stagebound Gotham of Tim Burton's 1989 film or the cartoony villains rendered in campy glory in Joel Schumacher's oft-criticized "Batman Forever" and "Batman and Robin" for this iteration of the character. Comic book movies are everywhere. At the beginning of the millennium, comic and graphic novel adaptations were uncommon, with the critical failure of "Batman and Robin" putting the breaks on many studios' plans for future superhero fare. Nowadays, we are spoiled by the veritable bounty of comic book re-imaginings, from the indomitable machine of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the many spin-offs of "The Walking Dead" to the Oscar-winning success of "Joker." We live in a time where even "Madame Web" is getting a big-budget film. Truly, our cup runneth over.
Of course, the trend is currently for superheroes and hasn't expanded much beyond that limited subgenre. Comic books are like any other artistic medium: they encompass seemingly limitless potential across styles, themes, genres, and intents. There are exceptions, from the mundane realism of "Ghost World" and "American Splendor" to the rip-roaring golden age adventuring of "The Adventures of Tintin.

Marvel Studios has delayed “Blade” and shut down pre-production on the project due to the writer’s strike.
Filming on the vampire reboot was set to begin in June down in Atlanta.
A week before the current WGA contract expired, “True Detective” creator Nic Pizzolatto was set to rewrite “Blade” script. The Marvel Studios film is the first Hollywood tentpole IP to be affected by the strike. The cast and crew were being notified on Friday.

Two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali will star in the feature, following in the footsteps of Wesley Snipes, who portrayed the half-human vampire hunter in the original “Blade” trilogy. Rights Deal
Lionsgate has bought North American rights to Roland Emmerich’s science-fiction project “Moonfall.”
The deal, announced Tuesday, re-teams Lionsgate with Emmerich after they previously collaborated on the World War II epic “Midway.” The movie’s North American box office take has topped $43 million in less than three weeks.

It’s no secret that superheroes have always been a little gay. The tights, the hulking muscles, the secret powers always threatening to come to light — it’s a veritable field day for queer academics. Give Batman an eager young sidekick and you’ve practically got a rom-com. Which is exactly what happens in Joel Schumacher’s “Batman and Robin,” the 1997 flop that is as critically derided as it is held up as a shining example of a gay-coded movie that’s not actually gay. The Warner Bros. action flick starred George Clooney as Bruce Wayne and Chris O’Donnell as Robin, and theories have long persisted that Schumacher, who is gay, intentionally added campy elements to the movie in order to play up the gay subtext.
Sorry, gay Batman fans, Schumacher is here to rain on your parade.

We’ve arrived at the 30th anniversary of the release of Tim Burton’s “Batman,” the film that you could argue ushered in the modern age of big screen superheroes. But whether or not you agree with that idea, you can rest assured that you will almost certainly disagree with our rankings of all the Batman movies. Because that’s just how these things go.
15. “Batman and Robin” (1949) is just an abysmal experience, with a bad lead actor wearing a floppy-eared Batsuit. Though The Wizard, a villain original to this serial, is admittedly cool looking, it’s not enough to stem the boredom in this four-hour slog.
14. “Batman” (1943) gets points for novelty thanks to its hilariously over-the-top old fashioned World War II racism. But Batman’s first onscreen appearance lacks pretty much everything that would mark it as an engaging filmgoing experience today. It’s cool that a grandfather clock...

Fox gave an extended look at Shane West’s Batman villain Bane in a lengthy trailer on Friday for the upcoming final season of “Gotham.”
The trailer, which you can watch above, brings in just about every famous villain from the Dark Knight’s rogues’ gallery, including The Joker, Penguin, The Riddler, Catwoman, Poison Ivy, Scarecrow and Harley Quinn.
It also seems like Det. Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) will have to team up with at least some of them, namely Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) and The Riddler (Cory Michael Smith), against the others. We also see footage of West’s time as Eduardo Dorrance, before he becomes Bane.

Many TV specials from our childhood, like Rankin/Bass’ Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1966), were based on popular Christmas songs. In 1974, Rankin/Bass produced yet another popular Christmas special, The Year Without a Santa Claus, based loosely on Phyllis McGinley’s 1956 book of the same name. Two supporting characters created specifically for the special, Snow Miser and Heat Miser, are unusual fictional characters in the annals of television; several of their fans have devoted entire websites to them, and even Snow Miser’s song was paid tribute in a scene from the 1997 film Batman And Robin

Kevin Smith’s track record with Batman is a little spotty.
In 2009, he began the comic miniseries Batman: The Widening Gyre, which was panned by fans and featured a scene in which the Dark Knight pissed himself. However, he’s redeemed himself a little today with his spot-on comments that there really should be a Batman movie that does Mr. Freeze justice.
He was asked which villain he’d most like to see realized on screen during a live taping of his podcast Fatman on Batman and said the following:
“Well, they’re already making 96 different Joker movies, so obviously not the Joker. In terms of Batman villains, I would look no further than Paul Dini’s ‘Heart of Ice, they took one of the simplest, dopiest characters in Batman’s canon, ‘He’s a man with a freeze gun!’ and turned him into one of the most tragic, Shakespearean...

All week long our writers will debate: Which was the greatest film year of the past half century. Check here for a complete list of our essays. Just one glance at the Oscar nominees for 1998 might make it seem less a questionable choice for “best year in film” — and more an insane one. Instead of a 1974 – The Godfather II, The Conversation, Chinatown, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, etc – or even a 1994, where Shawshank, Quiz Show, and Pulp Fiction lost to Gump – you choose a year where the Oscars would allow Roberto Benigni to climb atop both the figurative and literal chairs of the Shrine? Fine, step away from the Oscars. Would you still celebrate a year that saw not one, but two movies about asteroids threatening the Earth? A year that saw such scars carved across cinematic history as Patch Adams, My Giant, Stepmom, and Krippendorf’s Tribe? It bears repeating: Krippendorf’S Tribe?...

In 1960 Bill Finger wrote a Batman story involving a South American rebel group releasing a mysterious “Rainbow Creature” composed of red, green, yellow, and blue on an unsuspecting rural village. Each color holds a power, when a power is used the associated color fades to white. Batman and Robin eventually devise a plan to make it use all its powers simultaneously. It works, and the creature fades entirely white. Then, before The Dynamic Duo can strike, it implodes into dust and blows away in the wind. This was Batman #134. And though the issue was released in 1960, it is the pinnacle of the 1950s Batman: bright, whimsical, otherworldly, and downright bizarre. Did this tone stem from post-War censorship and economic realities, or something else?

Superman's nemesis Lex Luthor has been in the headlines recently after it was revealed that Jesse Eisenberg will be playing him in the upcoming Batman vs Superman movie.
The super-villain first appeared in the DC comic books in 1940 and, although the archenemy of Superman, he has also come into conflict with Batman and other superheroes in the DC Universe.
Originally depicted as a mad scientist who used his intelligence to create futuristic weapons, Lex Luthor evolved into a bald businessman and industrialist whose sky-high intelligence compensated for his lack of superpowers.

Witchfinder General will play at the Vincentennial Vincent Price Film Festival in a 35mm print at 7:00pm tonight, Thursday, May 26th at Brown Hall on the campus of Washington University. Admission is free.
It’s likely that Vincent Price never delivered a better performance than the one he gave in Witchfinder General (1968), the fact-based story of infamous witchhunter Matthew Hopkins and the barbaric acts he practiced in mid-17th century England. Price completely jettisoned his usual campy theatrics in favor of an appropriately low-key, sinister, and menacing depiction of a purely evil man who hides behind a mask of religious allegiance. Price plays Hopkins as an unmerciful fiend with a genteel manner and an appetite for torture, especially burning. The movie is cruel in its violence but also intelligent and effective and Price is relatively restrained in a complex role as a man who whose mission is to achieve...

Many works of fiction have been said to be ahead of their time. In the world of motions pictures few are more prophetic than the 1950 comedy classic Champagne For Caesar. By that year, mind you, quiz shows were popular on radio and that young upstart television, but by the end of the decade these programs would inspire a national craze ( and a scandal later depicted in Robert Redford’s film Quiz Show ). Caesar foreshadows all this while showcasing some delightful performances by actors generally not known for big screen comedies.
