The film is now available but has been amputated of 7 minutes which made it quite clear who ordered the assassination. Crown prince Rudolf was on the opposite side of the political spectrum from his ultra-conservative father and was deemed a threat by the Austro-Hungarian Empire's ally (Germany) because he wanted an alliance with France and Russia instead of Germany.
The film was unavailable for years in France as it was judged too controversial: It implies that Archiduke Rudolf was murdered by foreign powers (i.e. Germany) and that it was not a crime of passion as it was always portrayed - Marie Vetsera being a co-lateral victim.
Dominique Blanchar's debut.
