When someone attempts to bushwhack John Wayne's character, the bullet misses him and goes through his hat. Right after the shot, it shows John removing his hat to knock out the light on the table and there is no hole. When Gabby Hayes holds up the hat and puts his finger in the hole, it is well below the top and then, later on, the bullet hole is shown right at the top edge.
