Drew Barrymore is a child of Hollywood royalty and a Golden Globe winning actress whose career has spanned nearly her entire life, making her first credited screen performance at the age of three. But how many of her titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at 15 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Barrymore was born to a celebrated acting family though she never really knew her famous ancestors. Her grandfather was John Barrymore, star of “Grand Hotel”, “Twentieth Century” and “Dinner at Eight” among others. She is also the great grand niece of Oscar winners Lionel Barrymore and Ethel Barrymore. Lionel won one of the earliest Oscars as Best Actor for “A Free Soul” in 1931 but is probably best remembered as the villainous Mr. Potter of the Christmas classic “It’s a Wonderful Life.” His sister Ethel won the 1945 Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “None but the Lonely Heart...

Two years ago, siblings Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell shared in four Grammy wins for the album “When We Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” (Album of the Year; Best Pop Vocal Album) and its single “Bad Guy” (Record of the Year; Song of the Year). Now, they have concurrently earned their first Oscar nominations for co-writing the song “No Time to Die” for the James Bond film of the same name. If they prevail later this month, they will become the fourth brother-sister pair to both be honored by the academy and the first to win for the same film.
The first brother-sister Oscar champs and first sibling winners overall were Douglas Shearer and Norma Shearer. In 1930, he triumphed in the Best Sound category for “The Big House” while she took the Best Actress prize for “The Divorcee.” They were followed by Lionel Barrymore and Ethel Barrymore, who respectively...

Oscar certainly loves mothers. All five of this year’s Best Actress nominees — Jessica Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”), Olivia Colman (“The Lost Daughter”), Penelope Cruz (“Parallel Mothers”), Nicole Kidman (“Being the Ricardos”) and Kirsten Stewart (“Spencer”) — play mothers. Ditto four out of five supporting nominees: Jessie Buckley (“The Lost Daughter”), Judi Dench (“Belfast”), Kirsten Dunst (“The Power of the Dog”) and Aunjanue Ellis (“King Richard”); the fifth contender is Ariana DeBose (“West Side Story”).
Actresses love getting maternal sinking their teeth-and sometimes claws-into mother roles whether they be good, bad, ugly or downright evil. Here’s a look at some early memorable mother performances that made Oscars history.
The mother of all mothers was Ruth Chatterton. Though she is not as well-remembered as other actresses from the Golden Age of Hollywood, she was extremely popular in the late 1920s and early ‘30s. Though no nominations were officially announced for the second annual Oscars,...

The Notebook Primer introduces readers to some of the most important figures, films, genres, and movements in film history. It was often said that women wanted to be with Cary Grant and men wanted to be Cary Grant, but perhaps no one was more consumed by the perception of Cary Grant—the handsome, unremittingly suave and stylish movie star—than Grant himself. “Even I want to be Cary Grant,” the actor once mused. Indeed, Grant’s public and on-screen persona was a carefully crafted, meticulously honed, and ultimately triumphant development, as much to suit the needs of his ascending celebrity as it was to shroud an unhappy childhood, a series of romantic passions and disappointments, and a latent dark side fostered by uncertainty and doubt. It was, however, and in any and all cases, resoundingly successful. Grant was the epitome of the movie star, a Hollywood icon and one of its most entertaining,...

Angela Lansbury, 2018 Emmy contender for Masterpiece Theater’s adaptation of “Little Women,” has one of the most unique awards histories of any performer. In her over 75-year career she has managed to amass a significant number of nominations for all three of the major acting awards: three Oscar noms, 18 Emmy bids and seven Tony citations. While she has sailed through the Tony Awards winning five times, the other awards have been more elusive.
Her Oscar nominations all came early in her career and she came up empty handed all three times (the Academy did remedy that with an honorary Oscar in 2013). Lansbury’s Emmy history has been downright infuriating for her fans since she has lost a staggering 18 times. That streak may come to an end this year if Lansbury is able to achieve the award for her work in PBS’s “Little Women.”

With the second season of the Netflix series “Santa Clarita Diaries,” it’s the perfect chance to look back at the film career of star Drew Barrymore from a very young girl to now. The unusual program takes the popular zombie storyline and sets it in suburban California where a young mother and wife becomes a flesh-eating zombie and craves human flesh to eat.

Now, a little Oscar 2015 trivia. If you know a bit about the history of the Academy Awards, you'll have noticed several little curiosities about this year's nominations. For instance, there are quite a few first-time nominees in the acting and directing categories. In fact, nine of the nominated actors and three of the nominated directors are Oscar newcomers. Here's the list in the acting categories: Eddie Redmayne. Michael Keaton. Steve Carell. Benedict Cumberbatch. Felicity Jones. Rosamund Pike. J.K. Simmons. Emma Stone. Patricia Arquette. The three directors are: Morten Tyldum. Richard Linklater. Wes Anderson. Oscar 2015 comebacks Oscar 2015 also marks the Academy Awards' "comeback" of several performers and directors last nominated years ago. Sometimes (Ok, frequently) the Academy drops the ball. Cary Grant gave his fair share of pantheon performances ("His Girl Friday," "Bringing Up Baby," "The Awful Truth"), none of which garnered him a nomination for Best Actor (he was instead honored for "Penny Serenade" and "None But the Lonely Heart"). Ingrid Bergman's work in "Casablanca," "Notorious" and "Stromboli" was similarly ignored. This year's Oscar candidates are no different, and with that in mind, here are the 15 best performances from the current acting nominees that weren't nominated for an Oscar. Patricia Arquette, "Lost Highway" (1997)"Lost Highway" is sometimes overshadowed by David Lynch's later masterpiece "Mulholland Drive," but it's a rewarding film in its own right, a nightmarish look at repressed guilt, barely-hidden jealousy and self-deception. Arquette (giving a canny double-performance as...

The play Barrymore, which in 1997 earned Christopher Plummer a Tony Award for his portrayal of legendary stage and screen star John Barrymore, will be shown at movie houses in Canada in May. Screenings in the United States and elsewhere will follow in October. Could that possibly mean a third Oscar nomination for Plummer, this year's Best Supporting Actor winner for Mike Mills' Beginners? Unless Academy rules have changed in that regard — and Barrymore gets shown for a week in the Los Angeles area — that's certainly a possibility. Filmed plays — Barrymore was filmed with multiple high-definition cameras last year — have earned Academy recognition in the past. For instance, a 1965 filmed version of Britain's National Theatre presentation of Othello earned acting nods for Laurence Olivier, Frank Finlay, Maggie Smith, and Joyce Redman. In 1975, James Whitmore was shortlisted in the Best Actor category for the Theatrovision production of his one-man show Give 'em Hell,...

Natalie Portman has finally responded to Jake Gyllenhaal recently calling her the Audrey Hepburn of our generation at an awards show earlier this month.
"Well, he's the Cary Grant of our generation," Natalie told Access Hollywood's Shaun Robinson on Sunday at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, referring to Jake's similarities to the legendary late actor, who starred in such films as 1955's Hitchcock classic "To Catch A Thief" and 1944's "None But The Lonely Heart," for which he received an Oscar nomination.
"He's so charismatic," Natalie continued of Jake. "And so dapper and smart. He's wonderful."

When Warner Archives first started it was my understanding that they wouldn't be remastering or tweaking any of their projects. That was fine. After all these were titles fans were glad to have at all much less in their original aspect ratios. But Warner has been slowly upgtrading the quality of at least some of their Archive releases which is just one more reason to seriously consider paying close attention to their release schedule.
None But The Lonely Heart features Cary Grant as a down and out Londoner with a heart core and sticky fingers. Set just before World War II the film offers Grant the chance to tackle a role well outside what became his well known persona. Brilliant , moving stuff. Grant lured Ethel Barrymore out of retirement to costar ad she earned an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Grant himself was nominated for Best Actor and although...

None but the Lonely Heart finds Cary Grant in a role that many will find surprising, not only because his famous smile makes only rare appearances, but because, legend or not, his roles are not known for their complexity of range. While you may find him in varied roles, each is somewhat straight-forward. Not so with Ernie Mott, a kind of likable, mostly harmless ne’er-do-well who surprisingly aims at rethinking his life when he must help his ailing mother (Ethel Barrymore) run her modest shop.
From aimless and disinterested slacker, to semi-repentant son and world-weary everyman, Grant here plays a multi-faceted character with a full plate of situations requiring his reaction. The difficult, and somewhat “lost,” era of pre-war, poor London offers a multitude of barriers and opportunities, and Ernie’s personal life is a trying mix of complication and simplicity. He has too many women in his life,...

$5 a Day, the father-son road trip film starring Alessandro Nivola and Christopher Walken, begins and ends with Ritchie Flynn Parker (Nivola) and his girlfriend Maggie (Amanda Peet) figuring out if they have a relationship, and talking about Ritchie’s Dad, Nat (Walken). It’s a fairly standard way to give a film a sense of completeness, one that is often boring and feels simplistic, but here it delivers a measure of the reason it has become standard. In a film about figuring out who you are, while dealing with tremendous father issues, there’s nothing like figuring out who you are to someone else, and why.
The film opens with Ritchie going through the motions of his job as a health inspector, but he’s taking it very seriously. He draws his tools like weapons, and treats his food thermometer like a surgical instrument. He wields his flashlight like a scepter of station,...

The Norma Shearer-Robert Montgomery-Herbert Marshall melodrama Riptide (1934); a remastered version of None But the Lonely Heart (1944), which earned Cary Grant his second and last Best Actor Academy Award nomination and veteran stage player Ethel Barrymore her only Oscar; and the biopic Song of Love (1947), starring Katharine Hepburn (as Clara Wieck), Paul Henreid (as Robert Schumann), and Robert Walker (as Johannes Brahms) are among the seven latest additions to the Warner Archives’ DVDs. The other four movies are: Between Two Worlds (1944), the worlds being those of the living and the dead, with John Garfield, Paul Henreid, and Eleanor Parker; John Ford‘s Flesh (1932), starring Wallace Beery, Ricardo Cortez, and Karen Morley; the film noir Crack-Up (1946), with Pat O’Brien and Claire Trevor; and The Conquerors (1932), Rko’s attempt to repeat the success of its Oscar-winning Cimarron, starring the earlier film’s leading man, Richard Dix, and Ann Harding.

Believe it or not, there’s much more to Ethel Barrymore than the fact that she was Drew Barrymore‘s great-aunt. In fact, Ethel Barrymore was the grand-dame of the Broadway stage in the early 20th century. She was the daughter of stage actor Maurice Barrymore, and the sister of John Barrymore and Lionel Barrymore, with whom she shared the screen in the 1932 MGM melodrama Rasputin and the Empress. According to author and critic Harold Clurman, Barrymore possessed a natural, effortless "regal" demeanor. He then elaborated: "It is a spiritual rather than a social quality. Very few kings and queens have possessed it." Enhancing her regal bearing — I can’t think of a single king or queen who possesses one — was a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for the 1944 drama None But the Lonely Heart. Better yet, Barrymore could be a truly effective screen presence, making great use of her wide-open,...

Jane Wyatt, who won three Emmys portraying quintessential TV mom Margaret Anderson on the comedy series Father Knows Best, died Friday of natural causes at her home in Bel-Air, California; she was 96. Born in New Jersey, Wyatt embarked on an acting career after a rather formal, upscale education, and worked both on Broadway and at the Berkshire Playhouse in Massachusetts. A contract offer from Universal Pictures in 1934 took her to Hollywood, and her most notable film role was as the eternally youthful Shangri-La beauty opposite Ronald Colman in Frank Capra's Lost Horizon (1937). Wyatt also appeared alongside Cary Grant in None But the Lonely Heart and Gregory Peck in Gentleman's Agreement; though never a major star, she found work continually playing warm, understanding, compassionate women. When the nascent medium of television launched in the early 50s, Wyatt found an even more successful career there, and in 1954 landed the part of Margaret Anderson in the domestic sitcom Father Knows Best, opposite Robert Young (who ranked #6 on TV Guide's list of the "50 Greatest TV Dads of All Time"). Helping set the mold of the perfect television mother of the 50s, she was the most capable and serene of TV moms, dispensing wisdom and dinner with equal aplomb to her three children and all-knowing husband. The role won her three consecutive Emmys, and the show only grew in popularity once it went into reruns after ending in 1960. Wyatt worked almost exclusively in television for the rest of her career, and enjoyed a certain cult status for playing the mother of Mr. Spock in the original Star Trek series (she reprised the role in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home). Wyatt is survived by her two sons with businessman Edgar Ward, whom she married in 1935 and who passed away in 2000. --Mark Englehart, IMDb staff...
