If Matt Reeves’ much-anticipated “War on the Planet of the Apes” (20th Century Fox) opens Friday to an expected $70 million or more, that would put it ahead (in domestic returns at least) of such recent high altitude-franchise stumbles as “Alien: Covenant,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” and “Transformers.”
Several factors contribute to the elevated respect for the series, going back almost half a century to when the first film, never intended as anything other than a standalone, became a surprise success in 1968.
Let’s track some curious highlights on the unusual trajectory that brings us to the ninth entry in the longest running English-language film series other than James Bond:
The Genesis Was a Stand-Alone Novel
Pierre Boule was well-known for the World War II novel “The Bridge on the River Kwai” which became a David Lean Best Picture winner and massive worldwide hit in the late 1950s.

Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman” (Warner Bros.) starring Gal Gadot dominated the weekend box office with a $100-million record performance that drew media hoopla as the best-ever female-directed wide release. But that achievement is not the only news out of the weekend Top Ten box office. D.C Comics’ newest entry soared on multiple levels — see below — but DreamWorks Animation’s “Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie” (20th Century Fox) also exceeded expectations.
But one week alone won’t set the summer box office to rights. Neither of last week’s weak openers, “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” (Disney) and “Baywatch” (Paramount), will have box-office legs. And the five holdovers in the bottom half of the Top Ten took in a miserable $11 million altogether.
The Top Ten
1. Wonder Woman (Warner Bros.) New – Cinemascore: A; Metacritic: 76; Est. budget: $249 million
$100,505,000 in 4,165 theaters; PTA (per theater average): $24,131; Cumulative: $100,505,000

James Corden and Orlando Bloom are full-service I.T. guys. On Thursday’s “Late Late Show,” the duo stripped and gave lap-dances to some lucky computers, all in the name of rebooting a pair of particularly difficult desktops. Apparently, almost all information technology issues can be solved by turning a computer off and then turning it on. These guys just so happen to have a unique methodology for doing the latter — yes, it was humping the office equipment. The Pirates Of The Caribbean movies have not been easy films to make....
As Michael Bolton once belted out: “This is the tale of Captain Jack Sparrow.” The Pirates Of The Caribbean film was a surprise sleeper hit in 2003, astounding the higher-ups at Disney who had long been sceptical of how a pirate movie, based on a ride at Disneyland, would appeal to audiences.
Off the back of this success, the sequels only got more ambitious and expensive in scale, with their use of practical effects and convoluted character dynamics serving to complicate the adventure format, with mixed results. It shouldn't shock you then, to hear that each of the movies released so far had some serious behind-the-scenes battles to make them shipshape.

2017 is a pretty big year in film. Sure, the number of dollars actually spent at the movies may be a bit less than last year (or a lot less), but a large part of that may have to do with the ridiculous number of blockbusters coming out this year. With so many hitting in fairly rapid succession, it’s only logical that folks would get wary of them. But it also makes it all the more impressive when one of these movies is able to rise above the rest in terms of anticipation.
Fandango has done the heavy-lifting: conducting a survey, where it asked over 10,000 moviegoers what their most anticipated movies were of the year, and coming in at number one for most anticipated blockbuster was the upcoming DC flick Wonder Woman.
Just for context, here is the complete top 10 of most anticipated blockbusters for the year:

With an amazing opening weekend of $350 million, Beauty and the Beast is now in line to possibly pass up the $1 billion dollar range when it's all said and done. This classic tale of an enchanted castle even went on to domestically beat out the live action debut of DC's trinity in Batman V Superman. There is no doubt that Disney has found it's groove in terms of how to produce successful films that are appealing to multiple audiences. For example Cinderella, Maleficent, The Jungle Book and now Beauty and the Beast have a special place in a lot of people's hearts who grew up with their beloved characters. Now with children of their own, Disney's brand of story telling is passed on to the next generation. With this kind of success, could this spin off a sequel?

Believe it or not, it’s never satisfying to dump on an actor or film series, even if the actor is a shitbag accused of domestic violence (ok, nevermind). That ugliness aside, what is up with Johnny Depp, his career and Five ‘Pirates’ films? One of the most respected actors of his generation way back when, working with some of the best filmmakers alive (Jim Jarmusch, Terry Gilliam, Michael Mann, Tim Burton), for over a decade now, Depp has taken almost exclusively tentpole movies that reek of paycheck gigs.

Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean franchise will be returning to theatres this May with its fifth installment, Dead Men Tell No Tales, and a new synopsis for the film has offered a better look at the film's story. The summary reveals that we'll find a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) aboard a pathetically small ship, The Dying Gull. Sparrow is being hunted by Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem) and his crew of ghost sailors, who are on a mission to eliminate every pirate who sails the seas. Sparrow will need to find the Trident of Poseidon if he hopes to survive. Strangely, the synopsis makes no mention of Orlando Bloom's Will Turner, who will be making a return to the story after his absence in the fourth film. Check out the full synopsis below and let us know what you think! Johnny Depp returns to the big screen as the iconic,...

If you've been anxiously awaiting the first look at Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, then tonight is giving you your first chance. Before the footage drops, however, you can check out the film's first poster and official synopsis. Come inside to check it out!
It's been a long and winding road to seeing the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean movie. The fourth movie, On Stranger Tides, hit theaters five years ago back in 2011 and despite Disney wanting to still capitalize on the franchise (though I felt it was easily the weakest film of the bunch), delays kept pushing things back. Dead Men Tell No Tales was originally slated to hit theaters last year, but delayed all the way to 2017.
As such, fans eager to see more adventures of Jack Sparrow have had to wait quite a while to see anything from the upcoming flick, despite knowing about it for a while.

Universal Pictures are really courting the highest level of A-list talent for their upcoming Monster Movie Universe and they've just landed another extremely big fish in the form of 3x Academy Award-nominee Johnny Depp. Deadline is reporting that Depp has signed on to star in The Invisible Man, which will be a reimagining of the 1933 original that starred Claude Rains as a scientist who discovers a way to make himself invisible, but loses his sanity in the process. Further details on the film's development were unavailable, but The Hollywood Reporter adds that Ed Solomon (Men In Black) will likely pen the script. Alex Kurtzman & Chris Morgan, the architects of the Monster Movie Universe, are on-board as producers. Depp, who recently had an acclaimed turn in Warner Bros.' Black Mass and will be seen next in Walt Disney Pictures' Alice in Wonderland: Through The Looking Glass in May and...

While fans were looking forward to seeing Star Wars return to the Summer season with Episode VIII, Disney/Lfl have just announced that Rian Johnson's sequel has been pushed back to a new December date, and are moving Pirates 5 forward to replace it. Come inside to check out the new date and learn more!
You can count this among the news I certainly wasn't expecting to get today. Just a little bit ago, Disney sent out a press release announcing they have changed the date for Star Wars: Episode VIII. It was set to hit theaters on May 26, 2017, just six months following from Rogue One, but has now been moved to December 15, 2017.
So reset your countdown clocks folks, it seems like Star Wars is planning on keeping the December dates (at least for the foreseeable future). From the press release, it sounds like the record breaking The Force...

Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales has wrapped production in Australia, it's been confirmed.
For the last few months, production on Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales has been ongoing in Australia. Johnny Depp is reprising the role of Captain Jack Sparrow for the movie, and Javier Bardem leads the new additions to the cast.
This time around, the film is being directed by Espen Sandberg and Joachim Ronning, and it's been revealed that production wrapped on the new movie at the end of last month. Not that you're going to be seeing it anytime soon. We're still just under two years away from the release of Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, which is set to arrive in cinemas on July 7th 2017. We suspect there might just be a fair amount of post-production work to get through.

The Tower Of Terror theme park ride, based loosely on The Twilight Zone, is to be turned into a Disney movie...
One of Disney's biggest live action franchises came about as the result of one of its theme park rides. In fact, Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Lies is currently filming, the fifth movie in the series, that's due to land in 2017.
Less successful was the film based on The Haunted Mansion, but let's not talk about that one.
Anyway, Disney executives have clearly been having a gander around the firm's theme parks, as they've resurrected plans for a film based on the Tower Of Terror ride. This is the one based in a rickety Hollywood Tower hotel in the 1930s, that in turn is based on The Twilight Zone. You're basically strapped in, sent on a lift up many floors, which them plummets. Production is back up and running on Pirates 5, and here's the first picture of a returning Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow...
Production on the fifth Pirates Of The Caribbean movie, Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, has been on hold these past couple of weeks, following an injury to its leading man, Johnny Depp.
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has now Tweeted an update from the set of the sequel, however, and it seems that the ship is sailing again. Furthermore, he's also posted what counts presumably as the first picture from the production. Accompanied by the words 'Captain Jack is back and we're not letting him go', here's the image of Depp that Bruckheimer put online.
There's still some way to go with the film. It's shooting in Australia, under the guidance of directors Espen Sandberg and Joachim Ronning. Depp is joined in the case by Javier Bardem,...

After an injury on the set, Johnny Depp is back to filming Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer is celebrating by releasing the first official image of the film for fans. Come inside to check it out!
To be honest, it's kind of surprising to see Anything from this film at this point. Production is still on going, and only recently started back up after a month-long break due to Johnny Depp being injured, and it's still Two years away from theaters. Considering Pirates of the Caribbean was once their largest live-action franchise, and they're hoping to rekindle that, Disney is wanting to start generating excitement early.
Yep, that sure looks like a Pirates movie, and that's most definitely Captain Jack Sparrow. Other than that, there's not much to what's going on in the image, and at this point, there shouldn't be. Personally speaking,...

As Forever's first run nears its end, will it be the last we see of Henry and co., or is there a chance it could be revived for season 2?
This review contains spoilers.
1.19 Punk Is Dead
The concluding episodes of a show can be tricky, I’ve concluded. Generally, they can either go all-out to set up the finale, or they can cruise up to the final show like it’s nothing special.
Punk Is Dead did neither of these things, instead choosing to tell a typical Forever mystery and then tack some dark foreboding on the end, quite cleverly.
As Forever goes, it actually demonstrated well how the show has developed in terms of characters and writing, because everyone here is very relaxed about what they’re doing and the story flowed along very naturally.
I did, however, take some convincing about some narrative points, especially in regard to the Punk era.

With Forever's first season rapidly approaching its end, the return of Henry’s nemesis is never too far away.
This review contains spoilers.
1.18 Dead Men Tell Long Tales
With two episodes to go after this one, I was expecting the final third to start to hint at where the show wants to bow out. But actually, pretty much this entire story is a set-up for the conclusion. If I sound overly pessimistic about renewal, that’s because Forever can only a muster a third of the viewers that Modern Family attracts on the same network, and only marginally more than Selfie, a show that already got canned. I’d love to see a second season, but being realistic it just isn’t happening.
The whole thrust of Dead Men Tell Long Tales is the death of a dive salvage boss, and how this neatly connects to Henry’s first fatality on the Empress of Africa.

The first story details of Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales have also been released...
It's taken some time to get to this stage, and we sincerely hope that said time has been used to put a strong script in place, but Pirates Of The Caribbean 5 has finally begun filming. It's tough to stand out among the other Super Bowl commercials, but the 30-second trailer for Disney's Tomorrowland turned a few heads - and probably brought back memories of Space Mountain. Yes, it's a movie inspired by Disneyland's futuristic-themed sector, and it's not the first time Disney transformed a ride into a feature film. Considering that some of the theme park's attractions have been beloved to Disney fans for years, it's surprising it took 60 years for Tomorrowland to spawn a movie. (California's Disneyland turns 60 this year, with plenty of celebrations foot.) To mark the World of Tomorrow's transition to the screen,...

Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales might just be poaching Skyfall's villain, Javier Bardem, to star alongside Johnny Depp...
Pirates Of The Caribbean 5 - currently going by the nice and short title of Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales - is finally heading into production earlier next year. The film will shoot mainly in Australia, and Johnny Depp will be reprising the role of Captain Jack Sparrow again. Furthermore, Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg are locked in to direct, with Jerry Bruckheimer producing.
And as the start date for the movie edges just a little closer, a major piece of casting news has dropped. Clearly the Pirates Of The Caribbean team were quite fond of Skyfall, as they're reportedly in early discussions with Javier Bardem to take on the role of the villain in the new film.

Javier Bardem is reportedly in early discussions to play the villain in the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean film.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tale, which will begin production in Australia next year, will see Johnny Depp reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow.
According to The Wrap, Bardem has been approached to play Captain Brand, a ghost out for revenge against Sparrow, who he blames for his brother's murder.
Reports had linked Christoph Waltz to the role, but the Skyfall star is now said to hold the offer. His wife Penelope Cruz starred in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
Meanwhile, Geoffrey Rush has been tipped to reprise his role as Barbossa, while new characters could reportedly include a British soldier and a young girl Rush is protecting.
