- Steve McBride: [to Maxie] If you get her to keep on makin' these passes at Dolan, do it yourself or get someone else. I wanna go to a wedding, not a funeral.
- Dr. Dolan: [to Mayor Saunders] My humble apologies, John. I underestimated your stupidity allowing a dizzy newspaper blonde to put one over like that.
- Torchy Blane: You think they might tie a can to you, Steve?
- Steve McBride: Why certainly, they might. Awh, it's not just myself I'm thinkin' about. I've gotta consider which side our bread is buttered on - yours as well as mine.
- Torchy Blane: Oh, no, you don't, now. Not OUR bread, not until the rice begins to fly. Until then, I have my own slice to butter.
- Torchy Blane: Nobody's gonna gag me and get away with it! Dolan asked for it and he's gonna get it. I'm gonna crack through with a story that's so hot that ol' - Skinner can't turn it down!
- Steve McBride: All right, as long as I'm going to marry her, why don't you put somebody else on the case.
- Dr. Dolan: That's just what we won't do. You're gonna stick on the job and pump Torchy to find out what she knows and where she's getting her information.
- Captain McTavish: What about that cigarette paper, Steve?
- Steve McBride: Well, a cigarette paper might spell Chuck Ball and Chuck Ball might spell Torchy.
- Spuds O'Brien: You're marvelous, Doc. I get it now. Ward's dead and he can't talk. We can, but, we won't. Then, we're all in the clear. And I thought I was smart.
- Dr. Reynolds: A reform movement - championed by a blaggard. And I for one am not going to make myself ridiculous by having any part of it!
- Steve McBride: That's what you get for tryin' to marry a jumpin' jack!
- Waitress: What's the matter with that?
- Gahagan: [holding a baby] I feel a poem comin' on: You're the cutest little sight, You tiny little might, As I hold you in my arms, I feel, I feel - - where's the mother?
