Virginia Bruce: MGM actress ca. 1935. Virginia Bruce movies on TCM: Actress was the cherry on 'The Great Ziegfeld' wedding cake Unfortunately, Turner Classic Movies has chosen not to feature any non-Hollywood stars – or any out-and-out silent film stars – in its 2015 “Summer Under the Stars” series.* On the other hand, TCM has come up with several unusual inclusions, e.g., Lee J. Cobb, Warren Oates, Mae Clarke, and today, Aug. 25, Virginia Bruce. A second-rank MGM leading lady in the 1930s, the Minneapolis-born Virginia Bruce is little remembered today despite her more than 70 feature films in a career that spanned two decades, from the dawn of the talkie era to the dawn of the TV era, in addition to a handful of comebacks going all the way to 1981 – the dawn of the personal computer era. Ann Dvorak, Lee Bowman in Leslie Fenton's Stronger Than Desire Ann Dvorak Q&A with Biographer Christina Rice Pt.1 What sort of approach are you going for in your book? Are you focusing mostly on Ann Dvorak's film work or on her private life — or both? Have you found many people who actually knew Dvorak? I am focusing on both Ann's professional work and her private life. Even though her career as a whole was not extremely notable, it lasted more than two decades and she appeared in over fifty films, not counting her work as an MGM chorus girl. She also made three films as a child, one of which was the 1916 version of Ramona, directed by Donald Crisp — so her body of work spans a period of over thirty-five years. No matter how mediocre some of her movies may have been, she almost always gave strong...

First of all, this is the second mention of The Hollywood Production Code (aka The Hays Code). You should really know all about that ifyou’re here, but, if you don’t, here’s a mighty nice primer from a few years back.
