Straightened Story: Lojkine’s Details Delivery App Woes to Application Process Lows
Standing on fertile creative ground, Boris Lojkine once again explores the narratives of individuals far removed from their comfort zones, miles away from the familiar landscapes. Following 2014’s Hope and 2019’s Camille, the French filmmaker once again puts the spotlight onto individual’s plight towards a better life. Representing thousands of undocumented, replaceable people in society’s plain view, L’Histoire de Souleymane (The Story of Souleymane) doesn’t ask if you know where your food comes from? but rather, imagines the extra weight of knowing that your last step in a long journey can easily be a misstep.…...

Isabelle Adjani has been found guilty of tax fraud in Paris courts.
The “Possession” actress was given a two-year suspended prison sentence and fined €250,000, as Variety reported. IndieWire has reached out for comment.
The court found that Adjani set up her permanent residency in Portugal between 2016 and 2017 to avoid paying €236,000 in taxes. Additionally, the star did not declare €120,000 when depositing the funds into a U.S. bank account, and also disguised a €2 million donation into a loan. The investigation was opened in 2016, with a case of alleged fraud in business expenses leading to a second investigation in October 2020. A business associate had filed a complaint against Adjani in 2015 leading to the case.
Adjani’s attorney Olivier Pardo told Variety that they will be filing an appeal after the courts “relentlessly” prosecuted the actress. In October 2023, financial prosecutors had requested a suspended sentence of 18 months as well as a €250,000 fine; the...

Back in 1992 Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson — who had met the University of Texas in Dallas and were roomies — decided to make a movie. But after spending $10,000 and shooting 13 minutes of the crime caper comedy “Bottle Rocket,” they ran out of money. Eventually, the short and the full script made its way to Oscar-winning writer/director/producer James L. Brooks. It just so happened that Columbia had a deal with Brooks to finance a low-budget film selected by the filmmaker. And in 1996, the feature-length version of “Bottle Rocket” was released with Owen Wilson, Luke Wilson and James Caan. Though the film didn’t set the box office on fire, critics realized Anderson was a new and exciting cinematic voice.
Anderson has made 11 feature films — his latest “Asteroid City” came out earlier this year — and has been nominated seven times for an Oscar including three for screenplay, two for animated features,...

Swedish-born Greta Garbo became a star with a string of hit films throughout the 1920s and 1930s before disappearing from screens in 1941 at the age of 36. Though she appeared in only a handful of titles, enough have remained classics to give her a special place in history. Let’s take a look back at 10 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1905, Garbo got her start in the silent era, acting in her native Sweden before coming to Hollywood at the behest of MGM studio chief Louis B. Mayer. She soon became a popular presence on the silver screen as a romantic leading lady. Her performance in “Flesh and the Devil” (1926) as a seductress who tears two friends apart proved she was a woman to die for.
Since English was not her first language, Mayer was rightfully nervous that the emergence of sound would destroy one of his biggest stars.

The tracks arrive on streaming services as part of an ongoing vault series after being previewed at Paisley Park Celebration last month. “All a Share Together Now” was originally recorded in 2006 and has never been officially released, while “7 (E Flat Version)” is a remix of the third single from Prince and the New Power Generation’s 1992 album, Love Symbol.
Back in July 2021, the three youngest of Prince’s six half-siblings sold their inheritance in the estate to independent music publisher and talent management company Primary Wave. OWN is developing the network’s first animated comedy series The Mound from Munirah Safiyah Jones — who is no stranger to the animation space. Jones is the creator of OWN’s NAACP Image Award-nominated animated short form series Sincerely, Camille and the viral hit Junt Land.
The Mound is set in the 1980s in the Orange Mound neighborhood of Memphis, Tennessee, which is the first Black neighborhood in American history built by and for Black people. The animated comedy series follows the lives of Duke and Naomi Wiley-King as they balance marriage, family, and careers with the more pressing community issues of salon gossip, bougie aunties, suspect potato salad, and aerobicized colonizers.
“Munirah’s incisive wit makes you laugh out loud and think critically at the same time,” said OWN President Tina Perry. “We can’t wait to see what she does with the backdrop of such a unique Southern setting in the ‘80s.

Gaspard (Nicolas Duvauchelle) has lived his entire life in pursuit of fulfilling a promise from his grandmother that he’s never quite understood. She was the matriarch of a family that reached well past blood to encompass a group of artistic “Surprisers” who gathered at her famed Flowerburger—an underground speakeasy of sorts doubling as a safe haven for anti-fascist disruptors during the war where song and dance led to poems and love. With a wealth of important Parisian history many will never know, she made certain to document everything that occurred via an impossible pop-up book bestowed upon her grandson before her death. He took it willingly and excitedly because he wanted to grow up and continue her legacy. Life just hasn’t yet allowed Gaspard to do so.

Chile’s Cineteca Nacional, established in 2006, is working on a new restoration of Pedro Sienna’s “El húsar de la muerte” (1925), considered the most important silent feature film in Chilean history, the portrait of Chilean freedom fighter Manuel Rodríguez (1785-1818), a key figure in Chile’s War of Independence against the Spanish crown.
First restored by Sienna himself, when a copy turned up in a deplorable condition in 1959, the new restoration of the silent chime jewel will be ready from October, said Macarena Bello Martínez, the Cineteca’s mediation and audiences coordinator. The Cineteca, meanwhile, is printing its current line-up at the Locarno Film Festival’s Heritage Online, a new data base for film classics.
The Cineteca has continued its ambitious drive into heritage film this year despite the coronavirus pandemic.
Boasting an archive of some 5,000 titles, it focuses on the conservation and restoration of Chilean cinematic works and making them widely accessible.

Cineteca Milano is renowned for its silent film holdings. With a collection of more than 35,000 Italian and international films dating back to the 1890s, it was both coincidental and fortuitous that, in December 2019, the archive began digitalisation.
Part of a national digitalisation program, the Cineteca decided rather than merely deposit their digitised materials into the holdings of the Cineteca Nazionale in Rome, they would release films online.
Matteo Pavesi, the director of the Cineteca Italiana, tells me they wanted to “make our oldest archival materials visible; we wanted to publish these holdings for everyone to enjoy”.
Since the Cineteca was shut in February, Cineteca’s staff of six have been releasing 20 films a week on their free streaming service.
Pre-coronavirus, Cineteca Milano attracted around 300 users to its site each day.
In March, the online archive attracted more than 4 million users.

Look out, it’s an X-Ray Death Ray! We rushed this review out, and it’s only 104 years late. One of the feature films on a new disc devoted to an unheralded woman filmmaker is The Intrigue, a nascent science-fiction thriller of the ‘deadly invention’ variety. It’s all from 1916, when WW1 was being fought. Julia Crawford Ivers’ adept screenplay offers good espionage twists and Frank Lloyd’s direction incorporates some interesting visual effects. The show stays smart until a ‘pacifist finale’ that will elicit justified jeers from the hawkish among us.

There are few more transcendent in pop culture than the late, great Prince. Not only was he a master performer, songwriter, singer and guitar player, he was also a massive music fan who lent his genius to all genres, including country. He often enjoyed working under a pseudonym: Prince had many in his too-short life, from “Jamie Starr” to “Camille” to “Alexander Nevermind” and, of course, the infamous symbol once entirely substituted for his name.
It was as “Joey Coco” where Prince collided with his country side, writing the song...

Ladj Ly’s Oscar-nominated drama “Les Miserables” won best film, male newcomer and script at the Lumières Awards, the French prizes given by Paris-based members of the foreign press. This 25th edition of the awards was presided over by French actress Isabelle Huppert.
The searing police violence drama previously won the jury prize at Cannes, and just earned the Goya award in Spain for best foreign film. It is currently vying for best international feature film at the Oscars.
Alexis Manenti, one of the leading actors of “Les Miserables” won best male newcomer, and also shared the best screenplay gong with Ly and Giordano Gederlini. The film was produced by Toufik Ayadi and Christophe Barral of Srab films.
“Les Miserables” was inspired by the 2005 French riots and examines the tensions between neighborhood residents and police that helped inflame the rioting. It centers on three cops who find themselves overrun during the course of an arrest.

On 5 January 2020 the fourth installation of the Arthouse Asia Film Festival opened its doors with a grand gala and a warm welcome by Mr. Prosenjit Chatterjee for the artists, the jury and other representatives of the film industry present. The festival features 31 films, most of which will be seen in Kolkata for the first time. Shapath Das, the festival’s director, strongly supports renunciating arthouse film as a genre in its full glory in South Asia.
After the inauguration ceremony, the award winning French film “Camille” was screened. The opening film of Boris Lojkine is the story of Camille Lepage, a French photojournalist who was killed at age 26 in the Central African Republic. Last year, Blumhouse Productions founder Jason Blum got in a little trouble when it was discovered that none of the horror movies at his shingle had been directed by women — because, he said, “There are not a lot of female directors period, and even less who are inclined to do horror.”
After the inevitable backlash, he apologized with swift sincerity. Now he seems to be presenting “Black Christmas” as both penance and an amend.
Directed by indie auteur Sophia Takal (“Always Shine”), this burn-the-house-down remake really belongs in the midnight-movie section of a festival like Sundance or SXSW. As a wide release studio film nominally aimed at a multiplex audience, it feels strangely, if intriguingly, out of step.

With the first of the big year-end holidays less than a week away, those anxieties about huge family gatherings start to kick in. You know, the old conflicts, the scandals, past injustices. We’d repeat that old phrase, “Save the drama for your mama”, but she’s right in the thick of it. Or in the case of this new film, she’s the orchestrator. Like the ensemble cast holiday flicks, she’s setting the stage for some pre-July Fourth fireworks. But in this one, it’s not a major holiday, and it’s far from the old family home and hearth. So, there’s that “travelogue” element to the tale. Literally this family and a couple of friends come from different ends of the Earth at the request (more than a whim) of the matriarch named Frankie.

Greta Garbo, the silent turned talkie screen icon of the 1920s and ’30s, lived a lonely life, as detailed in a newly unearthed cache of intimate letters from the actress to her closest confidante. “I go nowhere, I see no one,” reads Garbo’s bleak account of a life lived in isolation, despite being a public figure. (The Guardian has the scoop.)
Penned between 1932 and 1973, the letters were addressed to Garbo’s friend, Austrian actress and writer Salka Viertel, who was a screenwriter on such Garbo films as “Conquest” and “Anna Karenina,” and co-starred opposite the actress in “Anna Christie.” In one letter from 1937, Garbo seems to be crying out for help.
“It is hard and sad to be alone, but sometimes it’s even more difficult to be with someone…When we are here on Earth it would be so much more kind if for this short time we...

French photojournalist Camille Lepage was just 26 when she was killed covering the armed conflict in the Central African Republic, a country riven by violence between largely Muslim rebel groups and Christian militias. A fearless and sympathetic photographer on the verge of a promising career, Lepage had spent eight months in a country where she’d found an unlikely home, hoping to better understand the violence long after the rest of the international community had shifted its gaze to other conflicts.
It was only after Lepage’s death that her story caught the attention of French filmmaker Boris Lojkine, whose sophomore narrative feature, “Camille,” will have its world premiere on the Piazza Grande during the Locarno Film Festival. Starring Nina Meurisse and based on extensive research with Lepage’s family, friends and colleagues, the film is both a moving coming-of-age story about a young photographer finding her artistic voice and a...

A Straub-Huillet Companion is a series of short essays on the films of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet, subject of a Mubi retrospective. Straub-Huillet's Eyes Do Not Want to Close at All Times, or, Perhaps One Day Rome Will Allow Herself to Choose in Her Turn (1970) is showing on Mubi from May 27 – June 26, 2019.Whether defeated viewers silently making their way to the exit after the first fifteen minutes or indignant critics taking an axe to the film in (once upon a time) major print publications, detractors of Straub-Huillet frequently bemoan what they see as the duo’s hatred of the audience. Straub, on the contrary, claimed that these were popular-minded films intended for workers and not intellectuals (i.e. to be shown in factories). It is obvious that the verbal density alone of many of the directors' “historical” films—most famously their 1969 adaptation of Pierre Corneille’s Othon—pushes stupefied viewers unfamiliar with the texts,...

'The Pink Panther' with Peter Sellers: Blake Edwards' 1963 comedy hit and its many sequels revolve around one of the most iconic film characters of the 20th century: clueless, thick-accented Inspector Clouseau – in some quarters surely deemed politically incorrect, or 'insensitive,' despite the lack of brown face make-up à la Sellers' clueless Indian guest in Edwards' 'The Party.' 'The Pink Panther' movies [1] There were a total of eight big-screen Pink Panther movies co-written and directed by Blake Edwards, most of them starring Peter Sellers – even after his death in 1980. Edwards was also one of the producers of every (direct) Pink Panther sequel, from A Shot in the Dark to Curse of the Pink Panther. Despite its iconic lead character, the last three movies in the Pink Panther franchise were box office bombs. Two of these, The Trail of the Pink Panther and Curse of the Pink Panther, were co-written by Edwards' son,...

'The Merry Widow' with Maurice Chevalier, Jeanette MacDonald and Minna Gombell under the direction of Ernst Lubitsch. Ernst Lubitsch movies: 'The Merry Widow,' 'Ninotchka' (See previous post: “Ernst Lubitsch Best Films: Passé Subtle 'Touch' in Age of Sledgehammer Filmmaking.”) Initially a project for Ramon Novarro – who for quite some time aspired to become an opera singer and who had a pleasant singing voice – The Merry Widow ultimately starred Maurice Chevalier, the hammiest film performer this side of Bob Hope, Jim Carrey, Adam Sandler – the list goes on and on. Generally speaking, “hammy” isn't my idea of effective film acting. For that reason, I usually find Chevalier a major handicap to his movies, especially during the early talkie era; he upsets their dramatic (or comedic) balance much like Jack Nicholson in Martin Scorsese's The Departed or Jerry Lewis in anything (excepting Scorsese's The King of Comedy...

Constance Cummings: Actress in minor Hollywood movies became major London stage star. Constance Cummings: Actress went from Harold Lloyd and Frank Capra to Noël Coward and Eugene O'Neill Actress Constance Cummings, whose career spanned more than six decades on stage, in films, and on television in both the U.S. and the U.K., died ten years ago on Nov. 23. Unlike other Broadway imports such as Ann Harding, Katharine Hepburn, Miriam Hopkins, and Claudette Colbert, the pretty, elegant Cummings – who could have been turned into a less edgy Constance Bennett had she landed at Rko or Paramount instead of Columbia – never became a Hollywood star. In fact, her most acclaimed work, whether in films or – more frequently – on stage, was almost invariably found in British productions. That's most likely why the name Constance Cummings – despite the DVD availability of several of her best-received performances – is all but forgotten.

Greta Garbo movie 'The Kiss.' Greta Garbo movies on TCM Greta Garbo, a rarity among silent era movie stars, is Turner Classic Movies' “Summer Under the Stars” performer today, Aug. 26, '15. Now, why would Garbo be considered a silent era rarity? Well, certainly not because she easily made the transition to sound, remaining a major star for another decade. Think Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, William Powell, Fay Wray, Marie Dressler, Wallace Beery, John Barrymore, Warner Baxter, Janet Gaynor, Constance Bennett, etc. And so much for all the stories about actors with foreign accents being unable to maintain their Hollywood stardom following the advent of sound motion pictures. A Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer star, Garbo was no major exception to the supposed rule. Mexican Ramon Novarro, another MGM star, also made an easy transition to sound, and so did fellow Mexicans Lupe Velez and Dolores del Rio, in addition to the very British...

One of the most memorable parts of Annie is when she gets to go to the movies and experience watching an exciting story unfold right in front of her on the big screen. In the 1982 version of Annie -- which is set in the early '30s -- Annie goes to the theater to watch the classic Camille, starring Greta Garbo and Robert Taylor. In the 2014 update, due in theaters this weekend, Annie found herself at the movies to watch a film called Moonquake Lake. So what in the world is Moonquake Lake? Well, it's a fake movie (unlike the very real Camille) and it stars real-life couple Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis, among others. According to its equally-as-fake credits, it was directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the guys behind The Lego Movie and 22 Jump Street, and based...
