Darryl F. Zanuck invited many songwriters to write songs for the production in a competition, and then let Maurice Chevalier select those he wanted to sing. Without hesitation, Chevalier chose the songs of Jack Meskill and Jack Stern.
The French version L'homme des Folies Bergère (1935) (translation: "The Man of the Folies Bergère") was shot simultaneously with the English version. Ensemble scenes were probably shared by both versions, but because of the major cast and crew changes, it is considered a separate film.
The play "The Red Cat" by Hans Adler opened on Broadway in New York City, New York, USA on 19 September 1934 but closed after 13 performances. In the cast were Porter Hall, Barnett Parker and Gerald Oliver Smith. Fox Studios head Darryl F. Zanuck financed the short Broadway run of the play, so he could buy the movie rights.
The movie was remade twice by Fox Studios, first as That Night in Rio (1941) starring Don Ameche, Alice Faye and Carmen Miranda, and later as On the Riviera (1951) starring Danny Kaye and Gene Tierney. All three films were based on the play, "The Red Cat," and featured the leading man in a dual role.
