- Engineer Frank Reynolds returns to his Heimatland, where he finds a blue diamond in Regine. But she has a brother who is not a diamond at all.
- Frank Reynolds is a successful electrical engineer, who returns to his native town in Germany after 10 years absence. He falls in love with Regine, who is a simple chamber maid in his house. She lives with her drunken father and criminal brother, who extort housekeeping money from her. Frank marries her, and hires an acquaintance of his, an elderly lady, to teach her how to behave in society. Floris Bell, an actress who had designs on Frank, becomes acquainted with Regine, and pretends to be her friend, but secretly engineers a plot to put her in a compromising position. She gets a beau to take Regine home from a party, lying to Regine that more party goers would be arriving soon at Regine's house. The beau tries to make love to Regine, but is discovered by her lady companion, who thinks the worst. The beau leaves in embarrassment, and Regine goes to bed, but soon after, her brother sneaks in through the balcony and forces her to give him money and Frank's overcoat. When Frank returns from his business trip, the lady companion tells him Regine was unfaithful; he believes her and not Regine, and storms out. Regine in desolation goes into the kitchen and turns on the gas. Frank gets called into the police station -- they have found his coat in the possession of Regine's brother, who has just been arrested. Frank realizes that Regine is innocent of wrongdoing, and only wanted to protect her brother. He rushes home and finds her unconscious. He smashes open the window and carries her out. The final scene is the hospital room, where she regains consciousness and forgives him.
