With the richest fictional world this side of “Star Wars,” the “Harry Potter” universe is one the great achievements in modern popular culture. And now, J.K. Rowling’s prequel, “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” shows that her universe expands handily. Taking a step back from the pressure to continue the existing storyline, she dips into its past for a smart, engaging prequel that deepens the “Potter” saga while pushing it in a fresh direction.
A gothic “Men in Black” set in 1920s-era New York, “Fantastic Beasts” scales back the dense set of events that defined “Harry Potter” movies and focuses on a narrower strata of magical circumstances in the middle of a human society. “Potter” stalwart David Yates conjures a visually sumptuous environment, and Rowling introduces a terrific central character in Newt Scamander (Eddie Redymayne, ideal for the geeky part), an animal conservationist who protects magical beings that...

As a teen, I read some Stephen King books. Hell, I think either my mom or I joined The Stephen King Library if you fiends remember that. If you don’t remember that, how’s this ad to jog your memory:
What I do remember is when this book came out, it was maybe a bit more adult than I was wanting. Keep in mind, it came out when I was 11. However, I’ve been on a kick recently to try and read more and I’m beginning with King’s catalog as I got to the point where I just collected his work versus actually reading the novels and collections. Maybe I can crank this one out before the film adaptation gets released next year via Netflix. The production started principal photography in Alabama yesterday. Want more info, read on…

He’s riffed on countless action movie tropes across Sony’s Jump Street series and will soon rub shoulders with the Men in Black. But for his latest, Channing Tatum is in line to join Jillian Bell for Disney’s long-rumored Splash remake, which will flip the tables by having the mermaid as a man and the human as a woman.
It’s a twist that was already in the cards and today, Deadline has made it official; whereas Tom Hanks and Darryl Hannah headlined Ron Howard’s cult hit as human and mermaid, respectively, Tatum and Jillian Bell are part of Disney’s gender-swapped version, which has already enlisted the support of both Howard and Brian Glazer as producers.
According to Deadline, the overhauled Splash redo hails from Channing Tatum himself, while Marja-Lewis Ryan is the scribe on board to make that ambitious idea a reality. Detractors may claim...

We look back at an often-overlooked part of the Ghostbusters legacy: it's Extreme Ghostbusters...
There was a time when no one cared about Ghostbusters. It was the late 90s - the pre-Pokemon, post-Mighty Morphin Power Rangers days to be exact. Nobody’s kid was exactly clamouring for a sequel, reboot, or a Ghostbusters continuation of any kind - except for Dan Aykroyd, who was practically lobbying for a third instalment while sitting front row at the Ghostbusters II premiere. Which is why we have this: an awkwardly timed, tonally disruptive Ghostbusters animated series.
Enter a brand new cartoon that picked up the sticky, ectoplasm-covered mantle of The Real Ghostbusters and wore it slightly askew to evoke that wholesome sense of 1990s irreverence: Extreme Ghostbusters.
Living up to its name, Xgb was extreme indeed. One glance at its radically inclusive team line-up is all you need to notice that.

The Nightmare During Christmas: Doughtery’s Cutesy Morality Play on the Christmas Spirit
Exploring the adverse aspects of Christmas, one of the most cherished holidays around the globe, is nothing new in cinema. Irate Christians were nonplussed about Bob Clark’s 1974 serial killer flick Black Christmas and its 2006 remake, claiming it compromised the spirit of their cherished holiday. And there are all those nagging, sordid details about good ole St. Nick’s bad side, conscientiously whittled away throughout centuries of increasingly honed capitalistic tendencies as regards the holiday. Several recent films have resurrected ideas about Santa’s nastier habits and what he does to the children that are actually naughty, like Dutch filmmaker Dick Maas’ Saint (2010) or Jalmari Helander’s inspired Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale (2010) from Finland. Genre director Michael Doughtery makes a memorable entry in this growing subgenre with Krampus, a creative though utterly declawed venture which plays...

Running, collecting fruit, throwing hammers. All the ingredients you need for a simple yet fun game. Ryan looks back at Wonder Boy...
To our jaded, seen-it-all 21st century eyes, Wonder Boy looks like the product of a more innocent time. This is, after all, a game about a lad in a loin cloth who rides a skateboard and throws hammers at snails. In terms of scale and sophistication, it isn’t exactly Fallout 4.
See related Quiz: Can you recognise these movie cats? Men In Black: David Schwimmer on turning down the lead role
But there’s something charming about Wonder Boy’s simplicity: the way it forces you to relentlessly press forward, balancing carefully-timed jumps with the need to get to the end of the level as quickly as possible. Its bold, chunky graphics. Its tinny music, which sounds like Schroeder out of Peanuts playing the...

We’ve reviewed every summer movie season since 1980 to find out which are the best, and which are the worst. Last week we posted our picks for the worst, and here we post our picks for the best.
2015 and 2016 may just be the most overthetop summer movie seasons yet. It seems like nearly every movie slated for a summer 2015 or 2016 release is heavily anticipated. Because of these impending summers of movie awesomeness, we’ve decided to take a look back at summer movie seasons of years past. The idea of the summer movie season is currently in full swing, but it didn’t catch on immediately. Hollywood had to do its fair share of experimenting to determine what types of films would be most successful. As a result, some summer movie seasons have been better than others. We’ve reviewed them all for you and ranked them from worst to best.

When mixing black and white movie characters as either friends or foes on the big screen should not produce any gray areas at all. Whether amiable or adversarial the pairing of interracial tandems makes for an interesting sociological study in cinema where tension, togetherness, stereotypical profiling and mutual or reluctant acceptance makes for some captivating film fodder.
Sure, in many ways it is an overused cliched in the movies to produce racial tandems for the sake of the entertainment to allow the creative juices to overflow. In Salt and Pepper: Top 10 Black and White Movie Tandems we will take a look at various “salt and pepper” teams as they come together in the name of law and justice, hostile necessity, friendly frivolity or professional attachment to bring movie audiences a sense of adventure and curiosity in the name of comedic or dramatic license. A good week of movie watching at home despite not a very good week watching movies in theaters. Then it was Criterion's new Blu-ray edition of Howard Hawks' Red River, which I'll have a review of this week. Last night I also started watching Men in Black 3 and it just got too late to finish it so I'll be finishing that later today. What I did see wasn't too bad, but not sure it's worth seeing or any extended commentary beyond acknowledging it exists. We'll see how it all ends before making that judgment though. Beyond that I did watch the second episode from "Hannibal's" second season,...

Director Colin Trevorrow has revealed details from his "Jurassic World" screenplay co-written with Derek Connolly, set 22 years after the events of "Jurassic Park".
The new film will star Chris Pratt ("Guardians of the Galaxy"), Irrfan Khan ("The Amazing Spider-Man"), Vincent D’Onofrio ("Men In Black"), Bryce Dallas Howard ("Spider-Man 3"), Ty Simpkins ("Iron Man 3"), Judy Greer ("Two And A Half Men"), Katie McGrath ("Dracula"), Lauren Lapkus ("Orange is the New Black") and Nick Robinson ("The Kings Of Summer").
"There will be a new dinosaur created by the park’s geneticists," confirmed Trevorrow. "They want something bigger, louder...with more teeth...
"I know the idea of a modified dinosaur put a lot of fans on red alert, and I understand it. But we aren’t doing anything here that (author) Crichton didn’t suggest in his novels.
"This animal is not a mutant freak. It doesn’t have a snake’s head or octopus tentacles.

I don't know if this should be considered a spoiler as it's just a map of the Jurassic World theme park. But it does confirm which dinosaurs will be returning to the franchise and reveals a few new ones that are being included. So if you don't want to know what kind of dinos are going to be in the movie, then don't look at the pictures. There are a lot of really cool dinosaur attractions at the park, so if you want to be a tourist that gets eaten, it seems like it would be the perfect vacation for you!

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting, that Colin Trevorrow's Jurassic World has added three females to the cast: Judy Greer ("Two And A Half Men"), Katie McGrath ("Dracula") and Lauren Lapkus ("Orange is the New Black"). At this time there is no specific details about their characters. Of those three Judy Greer is the one most of you will surely recognize. She had a memorable cameo as a sexually-aggressive nerd on CBS' hit-comedy The Big Bang Theory (pictured on right) and will be playing a CGI-monkey in Matt Reeves' Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Things have been pretty quiet on the Jurassic World front since we last reported on it mid January, but since then two more stars have joined previously cast Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy), Bryce Dallas Howard (Spider-Man 3), Ty Simpkins (Iron Man 3) and Nick Robinson (The Kings of Summer).
First up, according to Deadline, Vincent D’Onofrio has been cast to play the villain. He has most recently enjoyed a 10 year (10 Years!) job on Law & Order: Criminal Intent, but he has shown off major acting chops in previous scifi flicks like The Cell and Men in Black.
Irrfan Khan who has played in Life of Pi and The Amazing Spider-Man, has reportedly also joined the cast. His role in Jurassic World is being kept under wraps at this time.

One of sci-fi cinema’s most notorious villainous actors and a thespian so versatile he is nicknamed “The Human Chameleon,” Vincent D’Onofrio has signed on to play the bad guy in Colin Trevorrow’s Jurassic World. As an antagonist, D’Onofrio is probably best known for dark turns in Full Metal Jacket, Men in Black and The Cell. He has spent much of the 21st century working on Law and Order: Criminal Intent and Jurassic World will be his first major role in a mainstream film since the sci-fi flop Imposter in 2001.
A graduate of the Actors’ Studio, D’Onofrio is a method actor and should bring an intensity and range to Jurassic World that few others of his generation could pull off. It will also be nice to see him in what is nearly guaranteed to be a massive hit worldwide. Whether or not his villainous role...

This week's big new release is The Best Man Holiday, a sequel to the 1999 movie The Best Man. That's 14 years that it took for us to get a follow-up to the hit ensemble comedy-drama, which stars Taye Diggs, Monica Calhoun, Terrence Howard, Nia Long, Morris Chestnut and more. And the buzz so far indicates that it was worth the wait, with reviews for the sequel near the level of the original. Very few other long-awaited sequels have had such luck. They have their defenders, but titles that come to mind include Tron: Legacy, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, Men in Black III and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. We can also include prequels -- particularly Star Wars: Episode 1 -- The Phantom Menace and The Thing -- in the...

No, we are not talking about the 1980 Ulli Lommel flick, the awful 2005 flick (or its senseless sequels, though the third wasn't too bad), or even the failed worm-eating WWE grappler. What we have here could be the most terrifying iteration of the mythical character yet, if only because it's on a kids' channel.

I can pinpoint the exact moment I became a film fan, a cinema buff, a Movie Geek if you will. It was while watching a television broadcast of Pigskin Parade, a college musical based around football, released by 20th Century Fox in 1936.
But a little background on myself first. Born in southeast Missouri in 1955 I can remember when television was a rare and exotic device. We knew a few neighbors near us in the little town I started growing up in, Hiram, Missouri who had televisions. Getting to watch it was a rare treat ,we knew a little old lady near us who had a television and she let us come over to watch shows like McKenzie’s Raiders and the Grey Ghost.
In 1959 my mother bought a television, a 19″ Motorola cabinet model. I can be sure of the year because I vividly remember the premiere episode of The Twilight Zone,...

Both Brave and Bourne benefited from an unconventional Monday release, while Ted joined the £20m club, and Batman broke more records
The winner
Critics have remarked that historical animated adventure Brave doesn't quite boast the trademark originality of a Pixar film, but UK box-office has been pretty robust. Following 10 days in Scotland, Ireland and Northern Ireland that yielded £2.22m, expansion last Monday into England and Wales saw seven-day takings across the whole region of just over £6m, for a total to date of £8.27m. The film grossed £2.60m over the Friday-to-Sunday period.
The eccentric release pattern makes comparisons with previous Pixar movies tricky: last summer, for what it's worth, Cars 2 debuted with three-day takings of £3.54m. On the other hand, there is one comparison it is possible to make: earlier this summer, Ice Age 4: Continental Drift opened in the same territories two weeks early, and boosted its opening...

Sony lowers its full-year earnings forecast as it battles a strong yen and declining sales of TVs and game consoles
Sony's red ink worsened in the April-June quarter and it lowered its full-year earnings forecast as it battles a strong yen and declining sales of LCD TVs and video game consoles.
The Japanese electronics and entertainment company on Thursday reported a quarterly loss of ¥24.6bn (£202m) compared with a ¥15.5bn loss a year earlier.
Sales edged up 1.4% to ¥1.52tn, helped by cameras, professional broadcasting products and mobile phones.
Tokyo-based Sony lowered its earnings forecast for the business year through March 2013 to a ¥20bn profit, down from ¥30bn projected in May, citing uncertainty in foreign exchange rates and global demand.
The company said it was hurt in the April-June quarter by a strong yen, which eroded overseas earnings, and by declining sales of liquid-crystal display TVs and PlayStation 3 and Ps Vita video game consoles.

When Universal Studios asked the magic mirror who would be the fairest movie in all the land this weekend, it replied, “None other than your own, Snow White and the Huntsman.”
The dark adaptation of the classic fairy tale bumped Men in Black 3 off of the throne with a $56 million opening weekend. It was a slight surprise considering Snow White opened to just 3,773 theaters, a wide release certainly, but not as wide as Mib 3, which was still playing in nearly 500 more theaters than Snow White. Universal was able to receive some redemption after Battleship flopped and while it wasn’t the perfect film, we have to say that it was worth it to see Charlize Theron’s performance.

The "Chant" trailer for "The Dark Knight Rises" took home the awards for Best in Show, Best Action and Summer 2012 Blockbuster Trailer as it promised a haunting final chapter to Christopher Nolan's Gotham City chronicles. Los Angeles — Hulk, smash.
That's what Captain America tells the Incredible Hulk to do in "The Avengers," and that's what the Marvel Comics superhero mash-up did at the box office, smashing the domestic revenue record with a $200.3 million debut.
It's by far the biggest opening ever, shooting past the previous record of $169.2 million for the debut of last year's "Harry Potter" finale.
"The Avengers" added $151.5 million overseas over the weekend to bring its total to $441.5 million since it began opening internationally a week earlier.
That raised the film's worldwide haul to $641.8 million in barely a week and a half, more than its Marvel superhero forerunners "Iron Man," "Iron Man 2," "Thor" and "Captain America" took in during their entire runs.
If distributor Disney's domestic estimate Sunday holds when the final weekend count is released Monday, "The Avengers" would be the first movie ever to haul in $200 million in a single weekend.

Los Angeles — "Battleship," the first in a string of movies based on Hasbro board games, has survived an armada of tomato-throwing critics and chugged to $170 million in ticket sales overseas.
Yet it faces choppy seas as it steams toward its U.S. debut on May 18. What might sink "Battleship" is competition from other hotly expected blockbusters, including the superhero adventure "The Avengers," which opens Friday, and Sony's long-awaited "Men in Black III," which rolls out May 23.
"It could drown in amongst all of those big titles," says Blake Howard, director of Australian review site Castleco-op.com.
He says the movie's "popcorn escapism" was good enough to succeed in a regular year. This summer, it has unusually tough competition.
The hit-or-miss fate of a given Hollywood big-budget movie doesn't normally matter that much. Media company analysts discount the studios as too volatile to be given much credit inside large conglomerates.

'Haywire', 'Joyful Noise', 'W.E.' and 'New Year's Eve' Lead This Week's New DVD and Blu-ray Releases
Haywire From an entertainment perspective this is the week's best new release, but for action junkies this might not be the film you are necessarily expecting. Haywire certainly has its moments, but it's not the Bourne-style film the trailers were selling. It doesn't present it's action set pieces with quick editing and "thwacks' and "pows". It's more awkward and realistic than that with heavy thuds and what almost looks like wrestling. I enjoyed it when I saw it, but I don't want people to purchase it with the wrong expectations.
George Harrison: Living In The Material World I still haven't seen Martin Scorsese's George Harrison doc, but it was much loved by those that did. It's a long one at 208 minutes and from that perspective I'm going to be sure and watch the three hour Woody Allen doc first, but one of these days I'll get around to this.
