In recent weeks, X-Men '97 has been making headlines for all the wrong reasons. The series failed to win the "Outstanding Animated Program" Emmy (losing to Netflix's Blue Eye Samurai) and former showrunner Beau DeMayo continues sharing damaging claims about Marvel Studios following his firing.
Regardless, the series was a critical hit and fans remain eager for season 2...unfortunately, a new report from Nexus Point News reveals that X-Men '97 won't return to the streaming platform until 2026.
This is said to be a result of "changes being made to the story and scripts." Matthew Chauncey has replaced DeMayo as Head Writer and is thought to have been reworking the drafts DeMayo penned before being dismissed from the show.

Following the news of X-Men '97 Head Writer Beau DeMayo's dismissal in March, Marvel Studios waited a few months before tapping Matthew Chauncey as season 3's showrunner.
DeMayo's work on season 2 had already been completed, meaning there was no immediate rush to find his replacement. However, with his name now set to be removed from the show's credits, it looks like a heated legal battle will now follow.
While that plays out, the finishing touches are being put on X-Men '97 season 2 and work is well underway on a third batch of episodes.
Talking to Screen Rant, director Emi/Emmett Yonemura shared high praise for X-Men '97's new Head Writer.
"Oh, he's lovely. I absolutely love working with him," the director enthused. "He hasn't even been on super long, and he's already a super sweet, incredibly talented writer, so we're already having a blast over here, and I'm...

Chicago’s Riot Fest is reversing course, choosing to move back to its long-time home at Douglass Park just months after announcing plans to relocate to SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview, Illinois, and only weeks before this year’s festivities are set to get underway.
Riot Fest initially announced its move to Bridgeview after festival organizers were unable to reach an agreement with the Chicago Park District. However, the relocation to Bridgeview was met with a mixed reaction from fans due its distance from downtown Chicago and limited access to public transportation.

Speaking about it in a statement, the band’s Nate Walcott explained that Five Dice, All Threes “revisits the spirit of our older records. There is a real quality of chaos and ecstatic urgency in the performances.” Comparing it to their 2005 album I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning, Mike Mogis said “It took us 20 years to make another record that sounds like a band playing live.

Spoilers for "X-Men '97" follow.
Rejoice, my X-Fans, for your theories have prevailed.
The "X-Men '97" season 1 finale, the three-part epic "Tolerance is Extinction," ended in shocking fashion. The big bad Bastion sent Asteroid M on a collision course with Earth, deciding to force humanity into extinction rather than evolution. Professor X, unable to not see the good in Magneto, even after his frenemy's torturous attack on Wolverine, pulls Erik back to the light with a telepathic therapy session. The X-Men, once more including Magneto, save the world. But then they vanish, pulled through time to the past, future (Cyclops and Jean), and parts unrevealed. The past X-Men, stranded in Egypt, circa 3000 BC, meet a grey-skinned mutant that fans will certainly recognize.
As is Marvel tradition, there's also post-credits scene revealing that, while the X-Men are scattered across time, an old foe is rearing his head. In the present, En Sabah Nur's future self,...

When it comes to movies, remaking acclaimed movies to suit modern sensibilities has more often than not resulted in dumpster fires. It is rare to have an old classic bested or even followed up by a worthy remake, let alone an entire movie series being topped by its reboot. Back in 2011, Fox Studios had managed to ace this seemingly impossible task by rebooting their 1970s Planet of the Apes pentalogy to create the new trilogy series. The strong political undertone of the Cold War era of the original movie series found its spiritual successor in themes of racial (species) discrimination, questions pertaining to animal rights, and criticism of human imperialism in the new trilogy series, which also justified the core message of Pierre Boulle’s novel of the same name that inspired the original series in the first place.

Magneto of "X-Men" has one of the most brilliant backstories in superhero comics — they almost made a movie entirely about it. He was once a young Jewish boy when Nazi Germany invaded Poland. Captured and dehumanized, he suffered at concentration camp Auschwitz like so many of his people. He survived but it convinced him that hatred is as natural to men as breathing, and so he fights to ensure the prosperity of mutantkind. This backstory was not part of Magneto's original conception (Chris Claremont added it in 1981's "Uncanny X-Men" #150), but you'll be hard-pressed to find a writer who hasn't embraced it since.
"X-Men '97" certainly has. In episode 2, "Mutant Liberation Begins," when Magneto is tried before the United Nations, he recalls how he was first put on his path when his people were slaughtered because "they called God by a different name.

You may not remember that the original "X-Men" cartoon from 1992 kicked off a flurry of '90s Marvel cartoons sometimes known as "The Marvel Animated Universe." This universe is less well known than the contemporary DC Animated Universe ("Batman: The Animated Series" up to "Justice League Unlimited"). The DC cartoons were overseen by a single creative team, so the connections were organic and culminated in story arcs. The Marvel cartoons, though? They all aired simultaneously (rather than in succession like the DC ones) and had different creators, so the most intersection was occasional crossovers.
"X-Men '97" remains laser-focused on the marvelous mutants, but it hasn't been shy about including cameos from other corners of the Marvel Comics setting. Episode 6, "Lifedeath – Part 2" featured Ronan The Accuser (you might remember him as the villain in "Guardians of the Galaxy"). Episode 7, "Bright Eyes," saw Rogue butt heads with Captain America.

Episode 5 of "X-Men '97" — "Remember It" — may very well go down as the most shocking TV moment of 2024. Adapting the dark "X-Men" comic storyline "E Is For Extinction" by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely, a giant Sentinel razed the new mutant homeland of Genosha, killing thousands, if not millions.
Episode 6, "Lifedeath Part 2," took a break focusing instead on the absent Storm and Professor X, but episode 7, "Bright Eyes," explores the fallout of Genosha. It picks up about a week later when the X-Men are hosting a rainy funeral for Gambit. They go back to Genosha to continue searching for more survivors. They find one: Emma Frost, White Queen of the Hellfire Club.
Emma, who was part of Genosha's short-lived ruling council, is a telepath. During the attack, she unlocked a second mutation to turn her skin diamond hard, so she survived being crushed under rubble.

I'm the precise age to have been introduced to the Marvel Universe by animation and film. Back then in the bygone 2000s, superhero movies never crossed over and the best that us wee fans could hope for was, say, the X-Men playing guest star on "Spider-Man" for an episode or two. I've now evolved into a curmudgeon who thinks superhero cinema could use more individuality and less interconnectivity, but I digress.
All this is to say that "X-Men '97" episode 7, "Bright Eyes," featured the sort of brief guest appearance that would've made 10-year-old me super-excited: Rogue meets Captain America (Josh Keaton). You might recall that Cap appeared back in the original "X-Men" cartoon; the season 5 episode, "Old Soldiers," showed him and Wolverine on a mission together in World War II. The end of the fifth episode of "X-Men '97" gave fans quite the shock. Not only did the peaceful haven of Genosha suddenly find itself under attack by a massive Tri-Sentinel Master Mold that massacred unknown numbers of mutants, but the beloved X-Men team member Gambit met his demise in a final act of heroism that stopped the tragedy from getting even worse. A week later, the end of the sixth episode revealed that it was recurring X-Men villain Mister Sinister who was behind the attack, having manipulated Bolivar Trask into activating the Sentinel strike. But as we learned in this week's seventh episode, "Bright Eyes," Sinister is just one part of the equation.

Like the original X-Men: The Animated Series before it, X-Men ’97 has been a masterclass in adapting (and updating) classic comic book storylines in ways that make them feel fresh and surprising. The latest episode, “Bright Eyes,” continues this tradition.
“Bright Eyes” deals with the fallout of the destruction of Genosha, with both a beautiful eulogy that Nightcrawler delivers at Gambit’s funeral but also Rogue going, well, rogue to punish those behind Remy’s death. But the biggest reveals involve not just confirmation of Cable’s relationship to Cyclops and Madelyne Pryor, but also that Magneto is still alive and being held hostage by a new villain, one with major ramifications for the rest of this animated universe…

Two weeks ago, "X-Men '97" delivered quite a heartbreaking development with the death of Gambit during a shocking Sentinel attack on the peaceful mutant colony of Genosha. The Ragin' Cajun went out in a blaze of tragic glory but left Rogue and the rest of the X-Men team shattered.
This week, the episode "Bright Eyes" begins with Gambit's funeral. Nightcrawler gives a lovely eulogy with a combination of just the right amount of card-playing puns and a wonderful tribute to Gambit's character, both as a man and a superhero. Though Rogue isn't in attendance, dealing with her grief in a vengeful way across the country, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Wolverine, Beast, Jubilee, Sunspot, and more are all there to lay Gambit to rest.
Also among the crowd are a few faces that you're meant to notice, but you might not remember them if you haven't refreshed yourself on "X-Men: The Animated Series" in a while.

X-Men ’97 dropped its latest episode, Lifedeath – Part 2, and fans have plenty to discuss in Marvel discussion forums. However, one character’s appearance may have a significant impact on the series. The episode provides a first look into a major villain with blood ties to the leader of the X-Men, Cyclops. While Scott and Alex were believed to be the only Summers brothers, Marvel Comics introduced a third one, Gabriel Summers aka Vulcan, in X-Men: Deadly Genesis.

In Hamilton McFadden's 1934 film "Stand Up and Cheer!," the unnamed off-screen president (actually Franklin D. Roosevelt) posits that the real reason for Great Depression was a sudden crisis of optimism. Additionally, wicked bankers were running amok and getting rich while the rest of the nation starved, leaving everyone nihilistic and horrified. The wasteful and corrupt Warren Harding administration followed by the Crash of '29 isn't mentioned, as McFadden's film sought to cheer people up, not make their depression — and the Depression — any worse. In "Stand Up and Cheer!," Fdr created a Department of Amusement and appoints a secretary (Warner Baxter) to oversee a feel-good, nationwide show to keep morale up.

It was a box of all the music Segarra had sent him over the span of nearly 20 years, ever since they’d left their childhood home in the Bronx to travel the country. When considering the greatest innovations in visual effects on film, there are few franchises that have done more for the medium than the rebooted "Planet of the Apes" trilogy (soon to be quadrilogy with "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes"). While plenty of modern blockbusters use visual effects to create expansive worlds and larger-than-life creatures, "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" was the first to ground them in a human-animal hybrid protagonist and their emotional journey. There is simply no greater digitally-realized character than Caesar, (Andy Serkis) cinema's first-ever photorealistic leading ape and one of modern filmmaking's most complex and challenging characters.
Caesar's rise from the son of a science experiment to an exalted leader is as heartfelt as it is harrowing, a story of balanced leadership and immense sacrifice amidst turmoil and violence. The fact that all of this is built using digital, humanoid apes -- not...

Mutants are gradually being worked into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and according to Cosmic Circus, the site that says the Midnight Sons might soon be appearing in the MCU, Marvel is looking at X-Men: The Animated Series, which ran on Fox Kids Network for five seasons from 1992 to 1997, as a major reference point as they figure out how to add the X-Men to their franchise. As Cosmic Circus noted, the influence of the animated series can be seen in the appearances of Charles Xavier in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Dr. Hank McCoy in The Marvels – as well as (to some degree) Wolverine in next year’s Deadpool 3. Since Marvel has such respect for the animated series, it’s no surprise that they’re also reviving it with a continuation series titled X-Men ’97, which is expected to start streaming on Disney+ sometime soon. One of the most memorable and heartfelt ways to tell someone you're falling in love with them is through a cute love song. Even if you're not into writing your own tune, sharing a Spotify playlist full of songs about soulmates, songs about love at first sight, and songs about saying, "I love you," is a sweet and low-pressure way to get your feelings across. And thankfully, there is a wealth of songs about falling in love out there - across all genres - to show someone just how much you care for them.
The best love song, however, is the tune that resonates the most with you and your partner. So whether you prefer a slow, romantic ballad, a sexy song, or a song that's more upbeat, your love interest is certain to be falling just as hard for you after giving it a listen.

Melanie Lynskey has posted her thoughts on Instagram about longtime friend Julian Sands, who was found dead in the Southern California mountains earlier this week.
Lynskey shared a photo of the pair and wrote about first meeting Sands while working on the 2002 movie Rose Red. She admitted being a bit starstruck as a big fan of Sands in the Oscar-nominated film, A Room with a View.
“I was so nervous I could barely speak to you,” she said. “When I did finally tell you what the movie/you meant to me, I was struck by your humility, your lack of ego, the absence of any grandstanding.”
The two became fast friends, Lynskey said, as she recalled their blossomig friendship.
“You bought me so many presents, mostly huge and intimidating non-fiction books and classical music CDs. You found out I’d never been to the opera, and so you came to...

This article contains spoilers for the Black Mirror episode “Demon 79.”
Black Mirror Season 6 Episode 5
Here’s another dubiously happy ending to add to Black Mirror’s growing pile: Girl summons demon, girl fails to commit the required number of human sacrifices to avert the apocalypse, demon asks her to spend eternity with him cast into a matterless void, girl says she’ll give it a go.
A matterless void, as protagonist Nida (Anjana Vasan) dryly notes, isn’t a million miles away from the life she was leading at the start of “Demon 79”, which was co-written by Charlie Brooker with new exec producer, Ms. Marvel and Loki’s Bisha K. Ali.
A young Anglo-Indian woman living alone in a drab flat, working a thankless department store job and having to wordlessly absorb the drip-drip-drip of ambient racism in 1979 Britain, Nida’s world didn’t have much to recommend it.
Enter: Satanic minion Gaap.

Kourtney Kardashian Barker has become accustomed to the majority of her life being captured by the cameras, but when she and Travis Barker originally began considering their 2022 nuptials, they had no plans to record any part of it. To their surprise, their friends and families captured a lot of it on their phones, creating intimate footage of the pair’s love and joy that they...

Every year, a lot of actors win awards on Oscar night, but the ones who most often win the evening are the young stars and starlets who get to walk the red carpet. Sometimes they even win Oscar gold too. With any luck, the young star of “The Florida Project” Brooklynn Prince will make a splash at this year’s ceremony, but here are some of the cutest kids of years’ past:
Jackie Cooper – “Skippy” (1930)
Jackie Cooper was nominated for Best Actor for his role in 1930’s “Skippy.” To date, he’s the youngest boy to ever be nominated in the Best Actor category. He lost to Lionel Barrymore, who thanked Cooper in his acceptance speech. But Cooper didn’t hear it: he fell asleep on Marie Dressler’s arm during the ceremony (which started after midnight) and no one wanted to wake him.

Conor Oberst has reunited with his longtime pals The So So Glos. The Bright Eyes frontman features on “Everywhere Is War,” the new single out now from the Brooklyn rockers.
Rather than the garagey, surfy punk by which The So So Glos made their name, “Everywhere Is War” is a poppier number primarily backed with a spunky piano riff. It’s difficult to even recognize Oberst’s trademark constantly-on-the-verge-of-tears vocals, too, as it’s been doused in T-Pain levels of Auto-Tune. Soon enough, though, the track has you humming along.
But despite its sunny exterior, “Everywhere Is War” has a much darker meaning, its title paying homage to Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie’s 1963 address to the Un (which also served as the basis for Bob Marley’s song “War”).
“The cover, shot by Bill Biggart, documents a rioter in Northern Ireland in 1989,” The So So Glos said of the song on Instagram.

Who is Pictoria Vark? She’s the spoonerism who serves as a rock handle for rising songwriter Victoria Park. The 23-year-old Iowa City singer/bassist just made one of last year’s finest indie records with her breakthrough, The Parts I Dread. It’s a road trip of an album—it’s full of the places she’s lived and left behind, from suburban New Jersey to rural Wyoming, from Brooklyn streets to Iowa prairies. But her songs all share that nomadic sense of wandering. As Park says with a laugh,...

Bright Eyes pulled out all the stops to deliver a full-band performance of “Dance and Sing” Wednesday on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. The track comes off the group’s 2020 album Down in the Weeds, Where the World Once Was, which Rolling Stone said reminds listeners why frontman Conor Oberst “was one of the best singer-songwriters of the 2000s.”
Oberst, alongside longtime Bright Eyes members Nate Walcott and Mike Mogis, were backed by a large group of musicians, including a full strings section and horn players, for the performance.

“Chinese Satellite,” the interstellar centerpiece of Phoebe Bridgers’ Punisher, has received an acoustic rendition.
Recorded at Sound City in Los Angeles, the new version of the track is stripped of Ethan Gruska and Tony Berg’s production, leaving Bridgers solely on acoustic — resulting in a dazzling, even lonelier feel.
The new cut of “Chinese Satellite” is part of Secretly Canadian’s ongoing SC25 singles series, a celebration of the label’s 25th anniversary. All proceeds go directly to New Hope for Families, a nonprofit raising money to fight homelessness in Bloomington,...

Jane Withers, an actress on both the silver screen and television commercials, died Aug. 7 in Burbank, California. She was 95.
Withers’ daughter, Kendall Errair, confirmed her death to the New York Times. A cause of death was not disclosed.
Withers’ first major Hollywood role came at just 8 years-old in the Shirley Temple movie “Bright Eyes,” a breakout role for Withers that set her on the path of playing rousing, tomboyish girls in films throughout the 1930s. The 20th Century Fox film came out in 1934 and saw Withers playing the role of Jane, a rich kid who delighted in tormenting her toys and wanted a machine gun for Christmas — the exact opposite of the film’s star Shirley Temple, who played her typical role of the adorable, upbeat kid, despite being an orphan.
