Among the myriad reasons we could call the Criterion Channel the single greatest streaming service is its leveling of cinematic snobbery. Where a new World Cinema Project restoration plays, so too does Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight. I think about this looking at November’s lineup and being happiest about two new additions: a nine-film Robert Bresson retro including L’argent and The Devil, Probably; and a one-film Hype Williams retro including Belly and only Belly, but bringing as a bonus the direct-to-video Belly 2: Millionaire Boyz Club. Until recently such curation seemed impossible.
November will also feature a 20-film noir series boasting the obvious and the not. Maybe the single tightest collection is “Women of the West,” with Johnny Guitar and The Beguiled and Rancho Notorious and The Furies only half of it. Lynch/Oz, Irradiated, and My Two Voices make streaming premieres; Drylongso gets a Criterion Edition; and joining...

March is Women’s History Month which commemorates and encourages the “study, observance and celebration of the vital role of women in American history.” And who better to study, observe and celebrate than Mae West and her place in movie history.
Talk about pushing the envelope. West wrote plays-usually revolving around sex-which landed her in jail. She never met an innuendo she didn’t like. West film comedies were popular and controversial. She was banned from NBC Radio-her name couldn’t even be mentioned-for over a decade. West even guest starred on a 1964 episode of CBS’ “Mr. Ed.” West has inspired several female performers over the decades including Madonna and remained true to herself up until her death in 1980 at the age of 87.

Rarely one finds a friend on the Criterion Channel—discounting the parasitic relationship we form with filmmakers, I mean—but it’s great seeing their March lineup give light to Sophy Romvari, the <bias>exceptionally talented</bias> filmmaker and curator whose work has perhaps earned comparisons to Agnès Varda and Chantal Akerman but charts its own path of history and reflection. It’s a good way to lead into an exceptionally strong month, featuring as it does numerous films by Pier Paolo Pasolini, the great Japanese documentarian Kazuo Hara, newfound cult classic Arrebato, and a number of Criterion editions.
On the last front we have The Age of Innocence, Bull Durham, A Raisin in the Sun, The Celebration, Merrily We Go to Hell, and Design for Living. There’s always something lingering on the watchlist, but it might have to wait a second longer—March is an opened floodgate.

To lose ourselves in a world of winks and wisecracks from quick-witted showgirls, ditzy heiresses and fast-talking career women may seem like a borderline irresponsible choice in These Troubled Times. But the blast of pure pleasure that is the Berlin Film Festival’s 27-movie tribute to Mae West, Rosalind Russell and Carole Lombard is an act of cinematic self-care with a precedent. The “No Angels” Retrospective, which co-ordinator Annika Haupts says was conceived as “mood-lightening” counter-programming during Germany’s first corona lockdown, comprises comedies that were themselves developed during America’s Great Depression. Spanning 1932 to 1943, there are ordained classics like “My Man Godfrey,” “His Girl Friday,” “Twentieth Century,” “To Be or Not to Be” and “The Women.” But there’s also a trove of less well-known treasures, united by irreverence and leading ladies whose charisma transforms the contrivances of Hayes Code-era Hollywood into escapism so effervescent it froths the blues away.

Ak vs Ak (Vikramaditya Motwane)
Over the 21st century, Bollywood cinema has entered into a completely different era of filmmaking and storytelling than was being made in the decades prior. Actors and directors who started their careers in the ‘80s and ‘90s have experienced such a drastic shift from their beginnings to what they are doing now that their older works seem almost archaic and unrecognizable. This has led, expectedly, to many of Bollywood’s artists making self-reflexive work that also reflects on the industry in general––Fan, Sanju, The Dirty Picture, Luck By Chance, and Shamitabh are just a few examples. Vikramaditya Motwane’s Ak vs Ak is...

The Notebook Primer introduces readers to some of the most important figures, films, genres, and movements in film history. It was often said that women wanted to be with Cary Grant and men wanted to be Cary Grant, but perhaps no one was more consumed by the perception of Cary Grant—the handsome, unremittingly suave and stylish movie star—than Grant himself. “Even I want to be Cary Grant,” the actor once mused. Indeed, Grant’s public and on-screen persona was a carefully crafted, meticulously honed, and ultimately triumphant development, as much to suit the needs of his ascending celebrity as it was to shroud an unhappy childhood, a series of romantic passions and disappointments, and a latent dark side fostered by uncertainty and doubt. It was, however, and in any and all cases, resoundingly successful. Grant was the epitome of the movie star, a Hollywood icon and one of its most entertaining,...

Constance Cummings in 'Night After Night.' Constance Cummings: Working with Frank Capra and Mae West (See previous post: “Constance Cummings: Actress Went from Harold Lloyd to Eugene O'Neill.”) Back at Columbia, Harry Cohn didn't do a very good job at making Constance Cummings feel important. By the end of 1932, Columbia and its sweet ingenue found themselves in court, fighting bitterly over stipulations in her contract. According to the actress and lawyer's daughter, Columbia had failed to notify her that they were picking up her option. Therefore, she was a free agent, able to offer her services wherever she pleased. Harry Cohn felt otherwise, claiming that his contract player had waived such a notice. The battle would spill over into 1933. On the positive side, in addition to Movie Crazy 1932 provided Cummings with three other notable Hollywood movies: Washington Merry-Go-Round, American Madness, and Night After Night. 'Washington Merry-Go-Round...

Anastasia is pleasantly surprised by this week's Supernatural. Here's her review...
Review
This review contains spoilers.
9.21 King Of The Damned
I admit: I didn’t actually think this episode would be any good.
King of the Damned was penned by Brad Buckner and Eugenie Ross-Leming, whose episodes (Taxi Driver, Holy Terror, and I'm No Angel) have historically been far from my favourites. But, I’m happy to report that, if I hadn’t known this episode was written by what the fandom often refers to as the “terrible duo,” I wouldn’t have been able to tell, which is really the highest compliment I can pay.
The episode gets off to a great start as an angel plays the role of the uncool kid desperately trying to fit in with the cool angel kids – going so far as to brag about being the trusted right hand man of his idol,...

9.4 Slumber Party
I was a little wary of what Supernatural would offer me this week after the rather unfortunate episode of last week. Thankfully, Slumber Party was a marked improvement over I’m No Angel, and while it may have had a rather lacklustre plot, it’s a stunning episode in a lot of other respects.
Slumber Party sees the return of Charlie Bradbury, a fan favorite since her introduction on the show (and who doesn’t like Felicia Day?). She always brightens up the show with her geekiness and the quirkiness of her episodes, and Robbie Thompson, who has so far written all of her appearances, really gets her – and us viewers. Supernatural focused on Castiel this week. A scruffy, tired, hungry human Castiel without any of his superpowers.
What was the best scene in "I'm No Angel?" What was it like to see Castiel in this kind of state? What about the reapers for hire? The Round Table team of Carissa Pavlica, Sean McKenna and Alice (from Winchester Family Business) are back with their analysis of the latest Season 9 episode.
Jump in and join the debate!
-------------------------------------------
What was your favorite scene from the episode?
Carissa: Watching Castiel have sex as a human. Yes, because he's hot. I just wish he had been having it with a real woman rather than a snake.
Alice: Surprisingly, it was the scene with Castiel and the woman with the sick husband in the church. It’s so fascinating, isn’t it, that a former angel gets a unwavering lesson about faith from a human woman with a sick husband.

Supernatural's ninth season takes an uncharacteristic mis-step with I'm No Angel. Here's Anastasia's review...
This review contains spoilers.
9.3 I'm No Angel
I was really hoping that Supernatural would continue the wonderful track record it’s established this season with a third excellent episode.
Alas.
I’m No Angel is devoted almost entirely to Castiel – a thrilling occurrence, as it hasn’t happened since The Man Who Would be King. I spoke in my review of the premiere how valuable Castiel, as an angel, is as a character who can reflect on humanity. Unfortunately, this episode fails to live up to its own potential, or to that of Castiel’s character.
The episode begins with a focus on the logistics of Castiel’s new-found humanity: he now knows the human desperation of cold and hunger and thirst and sleep. Each scene, however, feels rushed,...

Of all the disgusting concepts Supernatural has presented to us over the years, none has been grosser than The Basic Human Body. Sure, all of this show's myriad beheadings, retractable fangs, festering pustules, noseless ghouls, and bloody stumps haven't been very appetizing, but let's be real, the human body is the ultimate nightmare and, worst of all, It's Real. I'm frankly tired of mine, how about you? On Supernatural, demons call us "meat suits," as if we were lucky enough to be so simple. No, inside each of us is a wet, pink, and red factory of repulsiveness, and "I'm No Angel" really brought the horror home for Castiel this week. It was hard enough for everybody's favorite fallen-angel-cum on-the-spectrum-sexy-hobo to figure out how to keep himself alive, but now he's having to endure the terrifying indignity of all of our bodily functions as well. Truly tragic and disgusting.Let's...

Supernatural Season 9 has dealt with the initial consequences of the fallen angels in "I Think I'm Gonna Like it Here" and the resurgence of Abaddon and the demons in "Devil May Care."
So, of course, "I'm No Angel" centered on the third major problem this season for the Winchester brothers: human Castiel.
Not only did the graceless angel have some full-on scruff, he was learning to sleep, eat, urinate and deal with general people stuff. He's still the same Castiel, just lacking in his superpowers.
It was great to see him try and cope with his new situation that really opened up his eyes to the goodness in humans. It's not only about survival, and not everyone is focused on power and greed. He may have been homeless and financially broke, but the people around him were there to lend a hand or a meal.
And I liked his conversation...

And just like that, Zeke lost any goodwill he earned by helping to heal Sam. With one ultimatum, the angelic pacemaker turned all fans against him in Tuesday, Oct. 22's all-new episode of "Supernatural." What exactly did he do in "I'm No Angel" to piss off the "Supernatural" fandom?
Warning: This recap contains major spoilers. Avert your eyes now if you have yet to see Tuesday's episode.
Let's start at the beginning. Castiel, making his long trek to the Men of Letters bunker on foot, is going by the alias Clarence (fun "Supernatural" callback: Demon Meg called him that once upon a time, because as Sam pointed out, it's the name of a famous angel from "It's a Wonderful Life"). Living as a human is proving to be more difficult that he thought: He is living in a shelter, picking up trash to earn his keep, eating toothpaste (guess he...

Supernatural fans bore witness to Abaddon's rise to power this week, as "Devil May Care" focused on the return of this redheaded knight and her plans for Crowley.
Was our Round Table team of Carissa Pavlica, Sean McKenna and Alice (from Winchester Family Business) happy to have Abaddon back? Do they want to see more hunters akin to Tracy? And what is their take on Dean's speech to Kevin?

What was your favorite scene from the episode?
Carissa: Ezekiel shining his angel though Sam was great. I can still remember the first time we saw Cas do that and the visual still packs a punch - especially coming from one of our beloved Winchester boys, even if it's via angel possession.

Fans were in an uproar when it was announced that angel-turned-human Castiel would be getting a love interest for "Supernatural" Season 9. As if viewers didn't hate April Kelly (played by Shannon Lucio) enough already, these first look photos from her episode, "I'm No Angel," will only add fuel to the fire.
The CW just released the photos from episode 3 airing Tuesday (Oct. 22), and Cas' life as a human is about to get extremely complicated. He's homeless, hunted by angels, and alone. "The last time we saw Castiel talking with Dean, Dean said, 'Get your ass to the bunker.' I think Castiel has taken that to heart, but the issue is he can't fly, he has very little money, so how is he going to do this?" executive producer Jeremy Carver tells Zap2it. "Devil May Care" was the perfect flip side to Sam and Dean's problems with the angels because it focused on the demons and Abaddon's rise to power.
The saucy redheaded knight of hell has returned (brought back in naked Terminator fashion) and she wants Crowley. She's tired of demon deals, weak meat suits and playing by the rules.
Abaddon is played a bit over the top in some of her delivery, but her evil sexy attitude feels like the right combination. Dean's line about not knowing whether to fight or make out was spot on for her character.

After writing about and discussing her short-lived modeling experience as an "Angel," Victoria's Secret has officially responded to Kylie Bisutti's accusations this morning (April 25).
During promotions for her upcoming book "I'm No Angel: From Victoria's Secret Model to Role Model," the winner of the 2009 Victoria's Secret Model Search contest claimed the company pushed her into going against Christian beliefs causing her to quit modeling.
The lingerie brand fired back against claims and issued the following statement to People: "Ms. Bisutti has made numerous fabrications and misstatements of fact regarding her brief association with Victoria's Secret. In 2009, Ms. Bisutti won an online amateur modeling competition and hasn't worked for us since that year. Kylie Bisutti gave up modeling for God -- and she has no regrets. In her new memoir, I'm No Angel, the 23-year-old model explains why she quit being a Victoria's Secret Angel in 2012 to focus on her faith after the industry put her through hell. The California-raised beauty had always dreamed of being a model. Soon after becoming a Christian at the age of 15, Bisutti moved to New York to pursue her career goal -- but it wasn't as a dream. Even in an industry used to wild weather and physical peril, this past opilio-crab season on Alaska's Bering Sea was one for the books. So says Johnathan Hillstrand, co-captain of the F/V Time Bandit, one of the crab-fishing fleet featured on "Deadliest Catch," airing a new season Tuesdays on Discovery.
"It's ugly," Hillstrand tells Zap2it. "There are a lot of injuries. It's just part of our job, but it looks pretty bad. They didn't have cameras on every boat, but the first two days of opie season, two guys lost their legs out there.
"I don't know if Discovery caught it on the Coast Guard end, but one of the boats that was on the show last year, the Kodiak, a guy got his leg crushed. We had ice and violent storms. Weather would come up, from southerly to northerly and back around to southerly, and the crab pots,...

If you're stoked on "Stoker," you can thank "Prison Break" star Wentworth Miller, who is making his screenwriting debut with the gothic Park Chan-wook affair. Miller wrote the script under a pseudonym, and the results ended up on the 2010 Black List of hot screenplays that weren't yet snagged by studios.
Wentworth, we hardly knew ye!
Miller isn't the only surprising star doing double-duty as a writer, either. He joins an impressive list of famous, Hollywood faces that wield a mean pen or, more likely, the latest version of Final Draft.
Rashida Jones
Her "Parks and Rec" alter ego Ann Perkins is "a beautiful tropical fish" and "a beautiful, rule-breaking moth," and even "a beautiful, talented, brilliant, powerful musk ox," on occasion, according to her Bff Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler). Off-screen, Rashida Jones is proving to be a rather formidable creative force as well. She and writing partner Will McCormack penned...
