A Winning Episode, but not by a nose
By this point in their history, the Fleischers' Screen Songs -- which dated, in fact, from 1924 -- had settled into a couple of well-performed routines: stories, of sorts, and simple series of black-out gags. This is the former type.
The story involves Bimbo, and his horse, and their preparations for a race, interspersed with a bunch of outrageously executed jokes. Dave Fleischer liked the rat-a-tat pacing of jokes, since if one fell flat, another would fill up the laughter. Interspersed with plenty of musical cues from Pramount's library and with the central song -- a Gus Kahn standard performed with a small fast-paced band -- the whole thing concludes with the race, and the manner in which Bimbo and his horse win it.
The jokes are good -- although the concluding one may be thought in poor taste these days. The music is fine. All in all, a fine addition to the series.
