Over Hollywood’s century-long history, women have played an integral part both as actresses on the screen, as well as creators behind the scenes. Many have fought to establish themselves in a male-dominated world, and have earned their place in history alongside the best, even managing to show out at the most prestigious awards ceremony — the Academy Awards. In celebration of Women’s History Month 2024, and the recent 96th Oscars ceremony, following is a list of 26 women who have earned eight or more Oscar nominations. Scroll through our photo gallery below.
One area in which women have dominated Oscar nominations is writing. Going all the way back to the second ceremony, Josephine Lovett earned a bid for “Our Dancing Daughters,” while Bess Meredyth received two noms for “A Woman of Affairs” and “Wonder of Women.” The next year, Frances Marion became the first woman to triumph in a non-gendered category,...

Cari Beauchamp, the respected film historian who put readers and viewers in close touch with the early days of Hollywood through her painstaking research as an author, editor and documentary filmmaker, died Thursday. She was 74.
Beauchamp died of natural causes at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, her son Jake Flynn told The Hollywood Reporter.
She was unable to attend an Oct. 28 event at the Tcl Chinese Theatre that celebrated authors represented on THR’s recent unveiling of “The 100 Greatest Film Books of All Time.”
Beauchamp is on the exclusive list thanks to Without Lying Down: Frances Marion and the Powerful Women of Early Hollywood. First published in 1997, it centers on Marion, who became the highest-paid screenwriter, man or woman, in Hollywood by 1917 before receiving Oscars for The Big House (1930) and The Champ (1931).
Beauchamp then wrote and produced for TCM a 2001 documentary based on the book, earning a WGA nomination along the way.

As viewers saw in yesterday’s episode of General Hospital, Elizabeth Webber (Rebecca Herbst) got devastating news related to her friend and fellow nurse Epiphany Johnson. As the General Hospital family comes together to pay tribute to Epiphany in Wednesday’s episode, they’ll be joined on-screen by a real-life friend of Eddy’s: actress Yvette Nicole Brown (Community). TV Insider chatted exclusively with Brown about how she and Eddy became pals and why she accepted Gh’s invitation to honor her pal, who played the beloved, no-nonsense nurse. How did you and Sonya become friends? Yvette Nicole Brown: We started in the industry around the same time. We’d see each other at auditions. We became friends when we tested for an ABC pilot, The Big House, which starred Kevin Hart, in 2003. I collected her. She became a family member. There were four of us — Sonya, ...

When writer-director Sarah Polley won her well-deserved Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay at the 95th Academy Awards last night, her speech started with a clever callout. "I want to thank the Academy for not being mortally offended by the words 'women' and 'talking' put so close together like that!" she said, before speaking about the themes of democratic womanhood in Miriam Toews' novel. While the reference to "Women Talking" could easily apply to a half-dozen different areas of improvement the Oscars still has to work on when it comes to supporting women, it also gets to the truth of Polley's category: in over 90 years, Polley is only the 10th woman to receive the trophy. This is also the first time in Oscar history that it's gone to a woman two years in a row.

If Jane Austen were alive today, and if for some baffling reason she wrote film criticism instead of brilliant novels, she'd probably say it is a truth universally acknowledged that a film that makes a fortune must be in want of a sequel.
Sure enough, no matter how much the industry changes, the desire to capitalize on a hit film by making another one just like it, rubber-stamped for audience familiarity, must be overwhelming. The history of cinema is littered with sequels and for each one that audiences remember — for better or worse — there's at least one that's almost completely forgotten, even if they're the sequel to a film that won Best Picture at the Academy Awards.
Indeed, there are more forgotten Best Picture sequels than you might expect. George C. Scott reprised his Oscar-winning role as General George S. Patton 16 years later, in the TV movie "The Last Days of Patton.

“Women Talking” was winning a whole lot this weekend. Sarah Polley won the USC Scripter prize for her screenplay on Saturday, the same day that she and the cast were honored with the Robert Altman Award at the Independent Spirit Awards. She capped off her weekend with a Best Adapted Screenplay victory at Sunday’s Writers Guild of America Awards, a key win to burnish her Oscar hopes. But is it enough?
Though “Women Talking” has been the adapted screenplay frontrunner all season, it has been increasingly vulnerable after its rocky performance that resulted in just two Oscar nominations for its script and Best Picture. If the adapted screenplay category were stronger, it probably would’ve fallen out of the top spot by now. But after its weekend wins, it’ll likely remain there, where it has 17/5 odds ahead of the surging No. 2, “All Quiet on the Western Front,” which is at 37/10. “Top Gun: Maverick,...

In what can be called movie geek comfort food, Battle: Los Angeles and Krull have become cult favorites over the years. Why? You can watch either movie while doing other things keeping an extra eye on the screen, have devout fans who can recite the dialogue verbatim and will defend both movies to the end. Guilty pleasures, yes, cult status, definitely.
Even HBO Max has it listed as such.

April is about to be a good month for returning HBO and HBO Max properties.
HBO Max’s list of releases for April 2022 features three hotly anticipated seasons of television. The Flight Attendant, which helped launch HBO Max as a viable spot for good dramedy in 2020, premieres its second season on April 21. That will be followed by another go-around for the sci-fi comedy Made for Love on April 28. Of course, the big ticket item this month is something that HBO Max inherited from its cable cousin. Barry season 3 will continue the story of hitman-turned-actor Barry Berkman (Bill Hader) on April 24.
The TV offerings run much deeper than just returning shows this month. April 7 sees the arrival of Tokyo Vice, a sprawling crime drama with some episodes directed by Michael Mann. The series stars Ansel Elgort as an American journalist embedding himself in Tokyo’s criminal underground in the late ’90s.

Conrad Nagel, the handsome matinee idol and co-founder of the Academy Motion Picture Arts & Sciences was the host of the fifth annual Academy Awards on Nov. 18, 1932. The evening marked Nagel’s second stint at Oscars host; the then-academy prez had hosted the festivities two years earlier. He turned on the charm in his sophomore outing at the glamorous banquet at the Fiesta Room of the Ambassador Hotel honoring films released between Aug. 1, 1931 and July 31, 1932. (Nagel would later co-host the first televised Oscars with Bob Hope in 1953.)
Eight films vied for Best Picture: John Ford’s medical drama “Arrowsmith”; Frank Borzage’s marital drama “Bad Girl”; Mervyn LeRoy’s examination of tabloid journalism “Five Star Final,” Edmund Goulding’s stylish drama “Grand Hotel”; Ernst Lubitsch’s pre-Code musical comedies “One Hour with You” and “The Smiling Lieutenant”; and Josef von Sternberg’s luscious pre-Code melodrama “Shanghai Express,” starring his muse Marlene Dietrich.

Nearly three decades have passed since Jane Campion reaped a pair of Oscar bids for directing and writing “The Piano.” She was the second woman to pull off this double play after Lina Wertmüller. Campion won Best Original Screenplay but lost Best Director to Steven Spielberg (“Schindler’s List”).
Now, she and Spielberg face off in a long-awaited rematch, having earned nominations for helming “The Power of the Dog” and “West Side Story,” respectively. She is now the first two-time female nominee in the history of the Best Director category. The prize has only gone to two women in the past, and it took 82 years for that glass ceiling to be broken. Kathryn Bigelow (“The Hurt Locker”) achieved that historical feat in 2010, and Chloe Zhao (“Nomadland”) followed in her footsteps just last year.

In the audio categories at the Oscars, Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing, typically the loudest film wins. So there’s one film this year that was almost tailor-made to sweep those prizes: Christopher Nolan’s WWII drama “Dunkirk.” Should the film sweep it would be the second Nolan film to do so and the 17th overall.
The Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing categories have gone through a lot of transformations at the Oscars over the years, at least in how they’re classified. The Oscars first started handing out one award for a film’s audio, Best Sound Recording, in 1929 with “The Big House” taking the inaugural award. Then the category became Best Sound in 1958 with the musical “South Pacific” becoming the first winner under that name. And finally it became Best Sound Mixing in 2003 with “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” taking home the first prize.

The story of this year’s Oscar race is rules. Which long-standing rule awards pundits rely on to make predictions will be broken? All of the top five Best Picture contenders in our predictions have something missing — “The Shape of Water” doesn’t have the SAG ensemble nomination, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” doesn’t have a director nomination, “Lady Bird” and “Get Out” don’t have editing or any craft nominations, and “Dunkirk”? “Dunkirk” would have to break one of the longest stats. Christopher Nolan’s epic doesn’t have any acting or writing nominations and only two films have won Best Picture without either of them: “Wings” (1927/28) and “Grand Hotel” (1932).
That’s right, it hasn’t happened in 85 years. Even then, you can attribute the first two instances to the early days of the Oscars, when categories, rules and voting patterns were in flux. “Wings,” of course, was...

A bit of chaos and confusion at this weekend's big Super Smash Bros tourney The Big House 7 resulted in a Crt getting blown to smithereens after fears it was actually an explosive device. Check out a picture of the event going down below, and feel the same sadness that old man feels by continuing to read on below:
As for what happened, no one seems too sure of how things escalated to this point. While not positive, the Redditor who posted about the event seems to have a guess as to why this went down:
So the venue is basically on the border to Canada. I don't know if that's why security is extra but someone left this Crt right outside the venue unattended and I guess someone thought that odd so they called the bomb squad and they blew it up with a controlled explosion and some cool looking gear.

Hal Roach looks on as technicians install Vitaphone equipment in his studio screening room, ca. 1928. (Click on the image to enlarge it.) 'A Century of Sound': Q&A with former UCLA Preservation Officer Robert Gitt about the evolution of film sound technology Long before multi-track Dolby stereo and digital sound technology, there were the Kinetophone and the Vitaphone systems – not to mention organ and piano players at movie houses. Much of that is discussed in A Century of Sound, which chronicles the evolution of film sound from the late 19th century to the mid-1970s. A Century of Sound has been split into two parts, with a third installment currently in the planning stages. They are: Vol. 1, “The Beginning, 1876-1932,” which came out on DVD in 2007. Vol. 2, “The Sound of Movies: 1933-1975,” which came out on Blu-ray in 2015. The third installment will bring the presentation into the 21st century.

Who knows if Jason Segel was pushed out or maybe he freely stepped away from the franchise. Either way his presence is missed in Muppets Most Wanted, not so much because he is needed in front of the camera, but his writing did breathe some charisma, energy, and an admiration for the legacy in The Muppets. The Flight of the Conchords creators, James Bobin (director) and Nicholas Stoller (writer) did return for the latest Muppet tour, but they don’t exhibit the labor of love that Segel had–and it shows.

Lady Gaga, her buddy Tony Bennett, and The Muppets perform the meta tune “We’re Doing A Sequel,” which follows Walter, Statler and Waldorf’s sure-to-be-hilarious “They’ve Ordered a Sequel.” Other singers on the soundtrack include Celine Dion, who performs with fellow diva Miss Piggy, Kermits and the whole Muppet gang for “Something So Right” (we’re guessing it’s not the Paul Simon tune of the same name), Josh Groban and Flight of the Conchords’s Jemaine Clement. Among the chestnuts on the album are Scooter and Pepe the King Prawn (remember the shrimp who felt up Lady Gaga in their atrocious Thanksgiving special?) on “Moves Like Jagger,” and Miss Piggy on “Macarena.” Also on the soundtrack, out March 24, are a number of actors who appear in the movie, including Tina Fey,...

The odds of having your short film included in this year’s Sundance Film Festival are .008 percent. Out of the 66 short film line-up (selected among 8,161 submissions) we find actress Rose McGowan move behind the camera for her directing debut (Dawn), we have Ain’t Them Bodies Saints producer Toby Halbrooks shovel out Dig (see pic above) and Todd Rohal (The Guatemalan Handshake) returns to the fest in between features with Rat Pack Rat. Filmmaker Magazine New Faces of Independent Film director Dean Fleischer-Camp rolls up his shirt sleeves with Catherine, Matthew Lessner returns to Park City with the helping hand Chapel Perilous while The Strange Ones (’11 accepted short) co-helmer Christopher Radcliff won’t be making a dissappearing act with Jonathan’s Chest. Finally docu feature-film helmer Lucy Walker moves into The Lion’s Mouth Opens. I’ll of course be covering several of these – look out for our coverage.

Short films can go a long way. Especially when they’re showcased at the Sundance Film Festival. The festival’s Shorts program, which was announced today, has a tradition of identifying remarkable filmmakers as well as introducing stories that ultimately make it to the big-screen as features. For example, David O. Russell brought his first film, a short titled Bingo Inferno to Sundance in 1987, while Half Nelson, which earned Ryan Gosling his first Oscar nomination, grew out of Ryan Fleck’s 2004 Sundance short titled, Gowanus, Brooklyn. “If you look back at the directors who got their start by having a short at Sundance,...

Wallace Beery: Best Actor Academy Award winner and Best Actor Academy Award runner-up in the same year (photo: Jackie Cooper and Wallace Beery in ‘The Champ’) (See previous post: “Wallace Beery Movies: Anomalous Hollywood Star.”) In the Academy’s 1931-32 season, Wallace Beery took home the Best Actor Academy Award — I mean, one of them. In the King Vidor-directed melodrama The Champ (1931), Beery plays a down-on-his-luck boxer and caring Dad to tearduct-challenged Jackie Cooper, while veteran Irene Rich is Beery’s cool former wife and Cooper’s mother. Will daddy and son remain together forever and ever? Audiences the world over were drowned in tears — theirs and Jackie Cooper’s. Now, regarding Wallace Beery’s Best Actor Academy Award, he was actually a runner-up: Fredric March, initially announced as the sole winner for his performance in Rouben Mamoulian’s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, turned out to have...

Don’t laugh. There are some people who say that he could be in a few years, once he gets out of The Big House.Back in February I speculated about the future of Jesse Jackson’s eldest son Triple J (as people like to call him) and since he was sentenced yesterday to two and half years in federal prison (along with his wife Sandi, who got one year), on charges of misappropriating over $750,000 in campaign funds and tax fraud, I thought it was time to revisit that piece..But the question is, once he’s out, what will he do? People are already taking about a major comeback for him. But where? How? His career in politics is dead. He can’t practice law since, though he graduated from law...

Perhaps one of the most buzzed-about pilots angling for a fall pick-up this season is Joss Whedon's project at ABC about the agents of Marvel's S.H.I.E.L.D., which underwent a name change in recent weeks.
Whedon spoke with TVLine about the change of title while at the "Iron Man 3" premiere on Wednesday (April 24), revealing why the show went from the simple "S.H.I.E.L.D." to its current title, "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D."
"I think it had to do with legal things. Ask Michael Chiklis, because I think it's his fault," Whedon joked, referring to the similarly named FX series.
Whedon also touched on the idea of "Avengers"/"S.H.I.E.L.D" crossovers, saying, "What we're trying to do is open the door for that -- but that's not the door to the main room. The big house is that 'S.H.I.E.L.D.' has to work on its own.

With less than three weeks to go until ABC unveils its 2013-14 TV line-up at its May 14 Upfront presentation, questions still surround Joss Whedon‘s pilot about the agents of Marvel’s S.H.I.E.L.D. — which internally at the network is currently dubbed Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Question No. 1: Why the ongoing name change? “I think it had to do with legal things,” Whedon told TVLine at Wednesday night’s Iron Man 3 premiere event in Los Angeles. Alluding to a similarly named series that put FX on the map, he quipped: “Ask Michael Chiklis, because...

In the Marvel Universe there are more than a few places for super villains to be detained and kept away from the public. The Cube was built for baddies who gained their powers after being exposed to various types of radiation; The Big House was established by Ant-Man and is a full-size prison that has been shrunk down by Pym particles; Prison 42 is a lock-up located in the Negative Zone (an alien universe separate from our own); The Vault houses tech-based criminals and was designed by Tony Stark....the list goes on and on. But while we still wait to see if any of those places will ever make it into a live-action movie, as you can see above The Ravencroft Institute For The Criminally Insane will be making its first appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The shot above was posted by director Marc Webb as part of his...

Randy’s building something special.
I’ll bet if a poll were taken to determine which movie star would be the most popular companion for drinks, it would be Cary Grant. Maybe Ray Milland. Maybe I should go to the internet and find the conclusive answer.
Thanks for waiting. It didn’t take long. You know how fast that internet is. A poll showing which celebrity is the people’s choice to spend time with had Ted Nugent holding a slight edge over Anthony Bourdain, and “Storage Wars” star Barry Weiss close behind. So, I guess there’s a pretty big difference between “movie stars” and “celebrities” these days. Of course, being alive may make it easier to score well in those polls. I’m sure breathing and bowhunting are all Ted Nugent has on Cary Grant. I’ll keep looking, though. If Mr. Grant turns up, I’ll let you know.

Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart's grand experiment in using satire as a political weapon continued Tuesday night on "The Daily Show," when the "Colbert Report" host dropped by to "not coordinate" with Stewart on how his Super Pac money is being spent.
Stewart already released two attack ads on Colbert's behalf ahead of the South Carolina primary, one painting Mitt Romney as a serial killer and another suggesting that a vote for Colbert is a vote for Herman Cain. But that doesn't mean he hasn't been confused about he should pend the rest of the money. So on last night's show, Colbert came by to remind him of some of the giant "loopchasms" in the Fec laws protecting the Super Pac that they can exploit with vigor.
First, Colbert reminded Stewart of what he realized on Monday night's "Daily Show," that he can comment on what he wants the...

Chicago – Some studios slowly roll their catalog films out to Blu-ray as directors or actors release new films with which to tie-in but Lionsgate has decided that holiday season 2010 is the time to import most of Tyler Perry’s films to the HD format just as his “For Colored Girls” is turning out to be a critical and commercial disappointment. Catch up with five of his previously-released films along with the Blu-ray release of “Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family: The Play.”
As far as a review goes, Lionsgate has always treated Tyler Perry fans well and these releases are no different. The HD video and audio are above-average and every film includes special features. As for the movies themselves, “Why Did I Get Married?” is easily the best (although the sequel is horrendous) and “The Family That Preys” has moments but I personally can’t stand anything...

Well... looks like this is it. The last Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes micro episode. It's been fun. But on the bright side, it just means it's nearly time for the real series to begin. On this offering, "The Big House", Marvel says:
"The astonishing duo of Ant-Man and Wasp take you on a tour of the Big House, the world's smallest super villain prison."
And the series doesn't begin until October 20. What are we to do until then, Marvel?
"Tune into Disney Xd at 8:30pm/7:30pm Central from October 11-15 to watch a new set of four Micro-Episodes each night!"
(Have they been expecting me to capitalize "micro episodes" all this time? And what's with the hyphen?)
So they're stringing the micro episodes together to make longer ones, and we'll just be in withdrawal for a few days between the 15 and 20 of October. And if you just need...
