The production team for this film assembled the largest herd of Texas longhorns in nearly 30 years. It was also the last cattle drive of its kind in history. Cast members such as Ernest Torrence, Noah Beery and Jack Holt were recruited as nighthawks to watch over the cattle, which were known for being fierce and temperamental, and even the slightest rustle could send them into a panic.
Actor/writer/producer/director Dean Reading's grandfather George A. Reading portrayed one of the uncredited cowboys in the film. Dean's father, Monroe Reading worked in his youth in the 1930s as a cowboy on the Blakely Ranch where this film was partially shot.
