The first official series title was "Hal Roach's Rascals." But the series also came to be known as "The Our Gang Comedies" simply because the name of this film caught on so well with the trade press and exhibitors who saw the preview. (Of course, the best-known title, "The Little Rascals," came decades later when the series was shown on television. And by sheerest coincidence, Century Comedies released a film the same year "Our Gang" was launched called The Little Rascal (1922).)
This film is presumed lost, apart from a surviving fragment.
This was the first short of "Hal Roach's Rascals" series that was filmed, and the third that was released.
Fred C. Newmeyer originally directed this film, but most or all of his work was scrapped, and Robert F. McGowan took over.
Spanky and Our Gang was a 60s folk band, much in the flavor of The Mamas and the Papas; that had several top ten hits in that era like "Sunday Will Never Be the Same" and "Lazy Day". They were of course named after the famous Hal Roach shorts.
