- After learning that her stepfather, John Braun, is a spy, Ruth leaves him and starts out upon a cross-country journey. In her travels, she sees a plane crash to earth and rushes to assist its pilot, John Barker. The two fall in love and are married. In the midst of their honeymoon, war breaks out and John is called to his post, leaving Ruth alone with only the servants to protect her. In John's absence, the enemy invades the countryside, commandeers the Barker house and imprisons Ruth in her room. Meanwhile, John takes leave to search for his wife. Managing to get through the enemy line, he arrives just as Ruth, enraged at the action of the invaders, dynamites the cellar of the house. As the building explodes, Ruth and John escape in his plane.—Pamela Short
- John Braun, an alien under suspicion, and his stepdaughter, Ruth, are accused by the secret service of giving information to one of America's enemies. Braun professes that he is innocent, and is dismissed. Up to the interview, Ruth knew nothing of Braun's actions, but on their way home he acknowledges that he was a spy, and that he wished to have her assist him, but she declines. The revelation causes Ruth to change her opinion of Braun, and she decides to leave him. Unobserved, she walks to the rear platform of the train and jumps off. Ruth gets up unhurt and starts off across the country. She has not gone far when an aeroplane crashes to earth. Ruth sees the form of an American aviator entangled in the wreckage. While at the hospital, Ruth calls to see the injured John Barker, a wealthy young American, and it was in this way that she meets his mother, who considers that Ruth had rendered her a service she could never repay. Ruth has the misfortune of losing her position through a detective who had traced her and informed her employer she was a spy. Her funds gone, she endeavors to find work, but is unsuccessful. She wanders out into the country and collapses on a railroad track. She is saved from death by a brakeman. John's mother learns that Ruth was ill, and has her brought to her home. After her recovery Ruth and John are married. The war becomes serious, and John is called to duty. After his departure Ruth is notified that the enemy is approaching. Everyone flees and through a mishap Ruth is left behind. The troops arrive and take possession of the home. Among them is Ruth's father, who insists that she give him information. She promises to aid them, with the one thought in mind, that she might obtain their plans, but she is discovered and made a maid in her own home. John is granted a leave and comes to see Ruth. By putting on an officer's uniform, he gains admittance. He sees Ruth and slips her a note, telling her to meet him that night. That night at dinner one of the men is about to tear the American flag to pieces when Ruth snatches it from him and flees from the room. She runs down into the cellar. Thinking she went on the roof, they climb out. Ruth has concealed some dynamite in the cellar. Lighting the fuse, she rushes to John. As she is about to climb into the machine, she gazes back, only to see the house blown into a million pieces.
