Check Out That Alternative Ttitle
This is the second oldest surviving Harold Lloyd title from Roach and the relative success of the series -- Pathe kept on renewing -- is a good indicator that the competition was punk or that Hal Roach was a great salesman -- probably both.
This short occupies that hard-to-amuse middle ground, neither well enough executed, like Chaplin or Arbuckle, to engage us, nor absurd enough to let us disengage our sympathies, like Keystone slapstick or Watson's Musty Suffer. Instead Lonesome Luke is a marginal character who makes me wince when he slugs people or douses them with chloroform.
Well, they would improve. Roach would retreat to the business office, where he was good and Lloyd turned into, in Mr. Roach's words, not a comic, but the best actor who ever played a comic. When he left Roach and was replaced with Glen Tryon -- who was a good actor, by the way, don't miss the opportunity to see him in LONESOME -- they put him in shorts where he was upstaged by all the human actors and two of the dogs.
So this hard-knock comedy is pretty poor. See it if you're interested in Lloyd's evolution, but not otherwise.
