Kolkata, Nov 5: Director Agnideb Chattopadhyay will file a petition before the Calcutta High Court Thursday seeking compensation after his "anti-government" Bengali movie "3 Kanya" was prevented from being screened at the state-run Star theatre here.
The suspense-thriller was released Friday across West Bengal and shown in private cinema halls. The film is said to bear a resemblance to the real-life Park Street rape case in February, in which an Anglo-Indian woman was raped in a moving car.
The incident had hogged national spotlight after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee initially dubbed the victim's allegation as "fabricated"..

Hooray, it's the start of the television season.
I can guess your reaction: "Wait, what? The fall TV season started weeks ago!" Sure, it did, but what got the most attention in September were the debuts of new programs. For TV critics and viewers alike, it's a month spent speed-dating: You spend a lot of time on entities you don't know very well and hope for the best, knowing that the chances of a long-term connection arising from this period of insanity are slim indeed.
What many of us spent the last month not-so-secretly longing for are the return of shows we already know are good. "Vegas," shmegas: I'm sure I'm not the only one who was most excited about the return of "Homeland" (Saul! Beards! Super-inconvenient phone calls! Claire Danes' unstoppable cry face!) and "The Good Wife" (though I share June Thomas' deep dismay about the clunkiness of...

February 28 usually ties off our grim second month, but this year we suffer one more day in February's bleak tundra. Let's warm up with some tidbits about DNA, basketball, the master of '50s musicals, and the singer-songwriter who has one hand in her pocket, and the other on, oh, probably a Buddhist urn right now.
1883: The first vaudeville theater opens in Boston, Massachusetts. Over 120 years later, we're still talking about the overwhelmingly popular concept of blackface. Sigh. We even use the word "blackface" to describe things that don't qualify as blackface, like Billy Crystal's impersonation of Sammy Davis, Jr. at the Oscars. Not blackface. It may be in poor or weird taste, but it's not a minstrel show. Now, that crazy crap that Roger Sterling tried out on Mad Men? That's blackface. Ohhhh, yes it is. Always nice when Don Draper gets to tell someone else, "You're a mess.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi was there recently in Chennai to inaugurate the first 7-Star Theatre of Abhirami Mega Mall. Addressing the gathered crowd, Cm said, “Technological advancements over these years have been surpassing with excellence. I myself have been seeing through my eyes of such an intense development.
During my childhood days, we used to watch movies sitting on the sand, since couldn’t afford for Bamboo bench seats. Most of us wouldn’t recommend for the second show as the audiences during previous shows would have split betel leaves and will be like blood stain on those seated at the same place.”
Appreciating the prodigious attempts of Abhirami Ramanathan, he said, “I must really thank Ramanathan for having been so supportive for the film industry by not giving up the mission even at speculative situation….”
