- -Within movement, the recurring stillness prevails as the only trace of humanity- The image of fallen idols is a recurrence that emerges from the contemporary economic and cultural turbulence within marginalised and central geopolitical structures of our time. The resulting aftermath and its future implications conduce to a reflection on the fragility of historical and cultural structures and the future becoming of sovereignty. The short film draws upon parallelisms between medieval and contemporary Europe, where the echoes of fallen empires and the dominance of stillness and absence govern the quotidian. Sequence 1) Within this frame-work notions of stillness and solidity are confronted with a medium that retains a central proximity to movement. Within a context where the suspension of narrative and language prevails, the film structure opens up a space that investigates the relationship between the solidity of natural geographical settings and the ephemeral suspension of urban settings in the light of the film/video medium as movement. Sequence 2) Documents the brief existence of Maltese 1980s new wave band The Ophidian Twin. The documentation consists of audiovisual archival footage, and an interview with the bands front man Jody Fiteni. The sequence translates a more specific reading of the notion of time and becoming in the light of history and memory. ADIEU FRIEDRICH retains a stylistic and conceptual proximity to the natural history film documentary genre, 20th Century continental cinema, Greek tragedy and Medieval mystery plays.
