- Rejected by the art establishment, wracked with grief over the loss of his older sister and tortured by addiction, the film captures Edvard Munch's life, one of the world's greatest artists of all time.
- Kristin is the daughter of a prominent landowner in medieval Norway. She grows up in total harmony with the ideals of the time: strong family ties, social pride and devout Christianity. She accepts the fact that her father has arranged for her to marry the son of another landowner. Kristin's beauty and purity create violent emotions around her. There are envy and attempted rape, murder and revenge. She seeks refuge from the world in a convent, awaiting the time for her marriage. Here the passion of her life strikes, the knight Erlend Nikulaussonn. He, an accomplished seducer, also falls hopelessly in love. They have to cross not only convent walls to meet, but social boundaries as well. Their love cannot be kept secret, and suddenly the innocent Kristin is the centre of a scandal. Her fiance withdraws from their engagement, her father rages, and Erlend's former mistress tries to poison her. The affair grows into a political issue, and finally some of the country's most dignified leaders persuade Lavrans to give in. The lovers win each other, but it is in front of a charred altar in a burnt down church, and their happiness has a double edge.

- Silas - like many men - is his wife's husband. After one of their fights where Silas as usual draws the short straw, his wife sends him out to buy some fish. For the money she has given him and some money he has put aside himself, Silas decides to go on a drinking bender. But he dares not return home without fish, and therefore decides to combine the business of fishing with the pleasure of drinking, and borrows a small boat with some fishing tackle in it for this end. Then he sets out on the Oslo-fjord. Silas has no luck fishing, but succeeds admirably in getting drunk, finally falling asleep. He then dreams the main storyline of the movie: In the boat he comes to the small island of Kavreingen - one of the many small islands in the Oslo-fjord. Treasure-hunters, a blood thirsty pirate and an unknown beauty cross his path, but Silas defeats all obstacles except one: His hash wife suddenly shows up on the island. The unknown beauty, with whom Silas has fallen in love, disappears without a trace, and Silas's wife solves that mystery with some striking arguments.
- Jakobsen lives in a home for the elderly after his wife passed away. His days are spent watching TV or playing bingo, which Jakobsen does not appreciate. However, what he appreciates the least is his roommate, who is annoying, to say the least. One night, Jakobsen runs away dressed only in his pyjamas. He steals a spray can, and becomes a graffiti artist for one night!

And while hard liquor is being poured down open gullets, big brother's Sami jacket emerges from the closet. Conditions are ripe for a quarrel about origin and identity.
