- In the market place tent, the writer Jaroslav Hasek shows four different films. The representatives of the separate stories are part of the public. 1) Vzorná skola mocnárství: The first former Chocholka (Vladimír Pucholt), is frightened by the Latin composition. He runs into the toilet and refuses to leave it despite the insistence of his classmates, teacher and the headmaster. 2) Vzorné rodinné stestí: The first former Honzátko (Václav Postránecký) buys a hamster. The animal settles inside the upholstered couch and doesn't want to come out. The family asks the animal trader Bukl to help. 3) Vzorný mecenás: The industrialist Kauble (Bohus Záhorský) unwillingly becomes the recipient of numerous applications for financial help. 4) Vzorná láska lepsích lidí: The old bachelor Hanzlícek (Josef Kemr) is pursued by his landlady who wants to marry him to her daughter, Anna.
- A satire, mocking a socialistic bureaucracy and paranoia: The Socialist Youth Choir is going to a festival in Warsaw. For the newly wedded Jílek couple, songwriter Václav and singer Vera, this is going to be a wedding trip. In the last moment, secretary of the festival committee, Kukla, arrives on the platform and cancels Václav's participation in the festival. He appoints the songwriter Strnad instead, getting him onto the train against his will. Vera, who wants to stay in Prague, is persuaded by her colleagues to go. The reason for Jílek's withdrawal is a certain sign of discontent with his songs, expressed by someone 'from a high position' somewhere once in front of Mihule, president of the festival committee. Strnad's wife is unhappy because her husband was supposed to have an urgent gall-bladder operation. The phone-calls amongst the officials result in blocking the publication of Jílek's song lyrics. Strnad returns home after having a gall-bladder attack. Jílek is supposed to fly to Warsaw but is called off again. Then a positive review of his lyrics is broadcast on the radio and published in the newspaper, and the situation changes. The book is published after all, and Václav can finally go. At the railway station, he is meeting the ensemble which is already on its way back.
- A few bus-loads of holidaymakers from the agricultural cooperative on a day trip arrive to see the show at the Slavia Circus. But, they have bad luck. It is Monday, the day on which the employees have their extra day off. The only person that leader of the group Mr. Bláha (Rudolf Hrusínský) finds in the empty circus is the stage manager Liska (Jaroslav Marvan) and the box-office girl Marie (Irena Kacírková). In a heated discussion, Bláha proves to Liska that the holidaymakers have reserved and paid their tickets for that night three months ago. Unfortunately, in the meantime, the extra day off was moved from Friday to Monday. Nobody remembered that one Monday performance was already booked. After a shorter argument with Bláha, Liska decides that the holidaymakers will have their show. He sends Maria to get the circus artists from all the different places around Prague - from the artists' exercising arena, from their flats, from the Lucerna Palace, and even from the Central Hotel, where one of the female artists is just getting married.
- Baker Jan Racek (Vladimír Repa) is a very hard-working and sensible man. His great passion is pigeon-keeping--and also, for many years, Ruzenka (Ludmila Vostrcilová). They are planning to get married, but Racek is so busy waiting for the pigeons' return that he misses the wedding. The couple are getting no younger, so the otherwise gentle Ruzenka becomes angry about this and gives Racek an ultimatum: it will be her or those pigeons.
- Count Hellford tells to his daughter Irena and her friends Tom, Jimmy and Frank the tale of the blue room, in which three people lost their lives through mysterious causes. Tom wants to win Irena's admiration, and he proposes that each of them takes a turn at spending a night in the room. Tom spends the first night in the room. In the morning everyone discovers to their horror that the room's window is open and Tom has disappeared without a trace.
- A village teacher and his wife are awaiting the arrival of a new young colleague. The teacher is worried in case he is like his predecessors who were not patriotic and were fond of speaking German. The evening approaches and the young man finally enters the room. The teacher realizes from his first few words that he is a loyal patriot. He also, however, needs to ensure that he is a good musician. The young teacher plays on a few instruments but he prefers the violin. The old teacher is reluctant to lend him his valuable instrument. He, himself, plays the piano. It turns out that the young man is an excellent musician and thus his older colleague is glad to welcome him to the school.
- The Prague Grand Orchestra travels by train to a music festival in Yugoslavia. Only the singer Sona Klánová missed the departure. In the meantime, she managed to buy a ticket to Belgrade at the air-terminal from Mrs Navrátilová, who couldn't make the trip. In the meantime, the orchestra conductor is beside himself with despair. He phoned to Prague from the border, and when he realized that Sona had left her house in a taxi, he thought that she would catch up with them by the road. The orchestra delayed the train's departure with an improvised concert for the custom officers and the passengers.
- In a wooden hut used as a canvassing center, members of a children's puppet-theatre group are rehearsing for a production about a journey to the Moon. The goings-on inside the hut and outside are being closely followed by amateur detective Pepik Barnabás. He, however, is the first to be under suspicion when a trunk containing puppets goes missing. The children follow him but, when they catch up with him, they discover he hasn't got it. Pepík offers to help them in their search.
- Young village shopkeeper Ferda Zuska wants to throw himself in front of a train because his girl has married another man. At the last moment he is saved by the railway watchman Dousa and his wife Anna. Ferda soon forgets his sorrow and begins to court this Anna. The unsuspecting Dousa is the object of laughter for the entire village. In addition, in saving Ferda he slipped on the railway tracks and since that time he has had poor hearing. One day he even discovers to his horror that he has become completely deaf and for this reason he must leave his job. After some time his hearing returns. Dousa decides to pretend further that he is deaf to find out what people think of him.
- Cooperative members are harvesting crops, trying to get new water piping installed and preparing to plough away the field boundaries in autumn. Local kulak Voznica (Vladimír Repa) doesn't like any of this so he forces sexton Kodýtek (Vlasta Burian) to help him sabotage their efforts.
- Disillusioned with his marriage which has ended in divorce, Petr Leroy goes off to the Riviera to the place where he first met his wife and where he hopes to be spiritually revived. Here he meets his friend Jan and together they enjoy the joys the Riviera has to offer. Jan meets a charming girl at the casino and he takes her off into the mountains. On his return he speaks of the beautiful Olga with whom he has spent a wonderful three days. Olga, however, does not appear for a meeting they had arranged, so Jan goes to look for her in the mountains. Then he sees her in a village and tries to catch up with her in his car. He has an accident. Olga takes him to the nearest sanatorium where everyone behaves very strangely to the newly-arrived patient.
- Dan, Freddy and Carda are roaming about Prague thinking of how to get some money. They decide to break into the box-office of a cinema, but a passer-by interferes. Freddy loses his jacket in the fight, but all three young men escape at the end. Freddy is afraid to return home and is hiding at the docks. The police identify him from his papers, which they found in the jacket. At the docks Freddy meets the customs officer Tonka and stirs her to pity with a made-up story about a bullying father.
