- Follows the residents of one English village across the 20th century and their turbulent lives.
- January 1915. The Middleton farm has fallen on very hard times, and John is drinking heavily as his desperation grows. Bert assumes responsibility for his mother and the survival of his family.
- 1st July 1916. The date of the Rondo: an annual wheel barrow race on the cricket field, and unbeknownst to the villagers, the first day of the Battle of the Somme.
- March 1916. Conscription is introduced for the first time in British history. Call up papers are delivered throughout the village, and soldiers arrive at the Middleton farm to requisition Bert's beloved horse, Big Molly.
- Present day. Bert Middleton is the second oldest man in Britain, and a film is being made about his life and his village. He takes us back to the summer of 1914 when he was twelve years old.
- Joe's brief leave from the Front has come to an end. He has tried hard to conceal his shell-shock from the family, but Grace knows that something is badly wrong.
- 1920. The war is over, and the village tries to come to terms with its loss. The date of the unveiling of the War Memorial draws close.
- The future of the farm hangs in the balance; John is in a coma following the blow to his head at the Mass Trespass.
- 1923. The Allinghams host a weekend party at the Big House for Edmund's political sponsor Lord Kilmartin.
- John is still keeping his head above water at the farm by milking his cows by hand, but Berts money is running out. There is tension in the Middleton marriage as Grace finds herself attracted to Bill, the local Labour candidate.
- Grace and John continue to fall out over everything. John has constructed a mobile milking machine that turns his farm into a booming success, especially when Rutter's cos contract TB so John has the monopoly on milk production.
- Gilbert and Agnes get married in the face of Norma's fierce opposition. Martha and Eyre steal some alone time together.
- John struggles with his speech after his accident at the mass trespass..
