- Three sets of unrelated middle age, middle class Swedish families go to Thailand for relaxation and adventure, but realize their problems do not disappear in the scenic evening island breeze. Their depressed lives become even more so as they mingle with Thai citizens for some cross cultural mishaps, and major and minor mayhem ensues, leaving most of them on the brink of suicide.
- A storm wrecks the island. At Happiness, Kajsa wakes up and is terrified when she discovers Wilda is missing. Joy and Pong are unconscious on their beach. Glenn roams the streets looking for Oh.
- Kajsa and her daughters are living at Happiness, but the previous owner wants to buy it back. Majlis wants to have fun, but her husband doesn't want her to. Glenn's need for constant talking causes problems in his relationship with Karn.
- Kajsa is working on making Happiness more hospitable, while Joy is following Pong, a boy she knew as a child. Glenn meets a transgender massagist. Majlis finds the courage to go against her husband and goes diving again.
- After her husband's death, Majlis goes on a spending spree using his credit card. Oh visits her sister, who is angry that she spent money on gender transition instead of helping her family. The conflict between Kajsa and Chan continues.
- Glenn is determined to get Oh's sister to agree to marry him. Majlis has no money left after maxing out her husband's credit card. Kajsa has to deal with electricity being cut off at Happiness.
- Chan blames Kajsa for Pong getting poisoned and Joy wants to reveal it was her fault. Bengt Jr. comes to Thailand looking for his father. Glenn continues his relationship with Dit.
- Kajsa is arrested and Wilda is locked up with her. Bengt Jr. goes to the police about his missing father. After breaking up with Dit, Glenn tells Oh he has feelings for her.
- Bengt's body is washed ashore. Glenn decides to build a house for Oh and her family. Joy wants to leave Happiness.
- Joy and Pong are camping on a beach. Oh wants to tell Glenn that she is transgender and won't be able to give him the children that he wants. Majlis is hiding from the police and living on a tiny boat.
- It's been three years since the great storm. Kajsa is building homes for her daughters, knowing she won't survive another stroke. Glenn and Oh organize a wedding, but they can't legally get married. Majlis is still hiding form the police.
- After Kajsa's death, Joy and Wilda go back to Sweden to live with their father, but they are unhappy there. Oh applies for Swedish visa in order to be able to adopt a child in Sweden. Majlis struggles with poverty and has troubles sleeping.
- Joy takes Wilda to the Full Moon Party, while their father is looking for them. Glenn and Oh go to Sweden to adopt a child. Majlis is unsure what she should do with the girl she was supposed to "deliver" in exchange for a place to stay.
- Joy and Wilda are traveling with the young people they met on the road. Glenn and Oh need a home and a steady income if they want to adopt a child. Majlis finds Tengu hiding on her boat and has to decide what to do with her.
- Joy and Wilda's father finds them and wants to take them back to Sweden, but Joy wants to stay in Thailand. Glenn and Oh need references if they want to adopt a child. Majlis decides to help Tengu look for her family.
- Joy, Wilda, and their traveling companions visit a Buddhist retreat. Glenn and Oh have to undergo a medical examination. Majlis wants to cheer up Tengu, so she takes her to ride an elephant.
- Joy has to decide whether she wants to stay in Thailand or go back to Sweden. Glenn and Oh organize a quick wedding. After losing consciousness, Majlis wakes up in one of the houses Kajsa built for her daughters.
- Johan takes Wilda to the house built by Kajsa, while Joy is on her way to Angkor Wat. Glenn receives a message about a girl he and Oh may be able to adopt. Teng gets very ill and needs medical attention.
- Joy and her father are desperate to look for Wilda, but the local authorities are unwilling to let them do so. Hurt by Glenn's actions, Oh goes back to Thailand. Majlis is still traveling with Teng.
- No longer ashamed of his feelings for Oh, Glenn goes to the hotel she is staying in. There she meets Majlis, who uses a scam, so she and Teng would be allowed on the premises. Joy comes up with a plan to find Wilda.
