Charley and Nora Guthrie named their son after the Democrat elected president that year. Woodrow Wilson Guthrie knew hard times as a youngster (his house burned down, his sister Clara burned to death, his father's small-town business and political careers never went anywhere, his mother suffered from undiagnosed Huntington's Disease and was declared insane), but he enjoyed performing (dancing, playing harmonica, writing songs) and learning (he read voraciously in the public library). In 1933 he married Mary Jennings, five years his junior, with whom he would have three children. In 1935 he joined the Oakies and Arkies driven to California by the Dust Bowl. His songs went from describing the tragedy of the migrants to urging their unionization. Though he wrote a column for the Weekly People, he never joined the Communist Party. When Will Geer got a part in the play "Tobacco Road" he invited Woody to join him in New York where he met Pete Seeger, Lee Hays, Leadbelly, Cisco Houston. He was commissioned to write songs for a never-completed documentary on Washington State's Grand Coulee Dam, and it was in the Pacific Northwest that his family left him. Back in New York in 1940, Woody joined Pete Seeger's Alamanc Singers and married Martha Graham dancer Marjorie Mazia. His autobiography, Bound for Glory, was published in 1943. He served in the Merchant Marine in World War II, and three ships were torpedoed from under him. In 1947 his and Marjorie's daughter, Cathy, was burned to death in an apartment fire. They had three more children: Arlo, Joady and Nora. In 1953 he married for a third time, to Anneke Van Kirk. They had a child, Lorinna Lynn Guthrie. When Anneke and Guthrie divorced, their daughter was adopted by a couple they knew, and did not have any further contact with Guthrie. Lorinna died prematurely (at age 19) in 1973, in a car accident in California.
In the 1950s he experienced bouts of irrational behavior and was often unable to play his guitar; his condition was ultimately diagnosed as Huntington's Disease. The rest of that decade and into the 1960s a new generation, notably including Bob Dylan, began to discover and play his music, adapting some of it to the new Civil Rights movement.- Erminia Motika was born on 23 January 1921 in Pola, Istria, Italy [now Pula, Republic of Croatia]. The son of a Hungarian-born furrier was born David Weberman and started out in showbiz as 'Dave Weber'. By the time he arrived in Hollywood in 1935, he was already a seasoned radio comedian. A series of clever celebrity impersonations on the 'Burns & Allen' show promoted his act and led to gigs as a voice dubber for Charles Mintz's Screen Gems cartoons, where he was put to work mimicking stars like Bing Crosby and Eddie Cantor. The short, bespectacled comic simultaneously worked at Columbia, Metro and, most importantly, for Warner Brothers. He was signed by sound editor Treg Brown to provide the vocals for Looney Tunes characters, working in tandem with the legendary Mel Blanc. Webb voiced the Elmer Fudd prototype "Egghead" in his first pairing with the zany fowl in Daffy Duck & Egghead (1938). In later cartoons, he gave expression to a whole bunch of other critters, in fact, everyone not already covered by Blanc. He also worked for Walter Lantz on various Woody Woodpecker shorts.
Webb eventually enlisted in the U.S. Army Signal Corps, worked his way up to staff sergeant and ended up entertaining troops in North Africa. Dwight D. Eisenhower was sufficiently impressed by his technique to bestow upon him the sobriquet of 'Comedy Commando', a tag which stuck around for several years after the war had ended. Webb later returned to radio, became the voice of 'Sad Sack', briefly hosted the quiz show "Guess Who" and then had a minor career on local television which fizzled sometime after 1951.- Director

Bix Beiderbecke was the first talented white jazz cornet player. He also played the piano, but he had more success playing the cornet with a very personal style. His first recordings were with "The Wolverines" in 1924. After this he played in the Charlie Straight orchestra in 1925, with Jean Goldkette in 1926-27 and in the middle of that year he signed a contract with the famous Paul Whiteman. He stayed with Whiteman until 1929, with many interruptions. His alcohol abuse was dramatic during this time and was the main cause of his premature death. Bix was also a notable composer. His compositions like "In a Mist" and "In the Dark" are very advanced for the time. His more famous recordings were with his little orchestra, "Bix and his Gang", in 1927. He recorded great solos with his friend 'Frankie Trambauer' like "Singin' the Blues" and "I'm Coming, Virginia". With Whiteman he recorded many great solos like "Lonely Melody", "Dardanella", "Sweet Sue" and "Oh Miss Hannah" - this last song with Bing Crosby on vocals. His final recording was in 1930. He played a lovely rendition of "I'll be Friend with Pleasure".- Monroe Arnold was born on 9 November 1924 in The Bronx, New York, USA.
