- Sueo Oe was born on August 2, 1914 in Maizuru, Kyoto, Japan. Oe won the bronze medal in the men's pole vault at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, Germany. In the wake of his Olympic triumph Sueo went on to set a national record in the men's pole vault at four meters and thirty-five centimeters in 1937 that stood for twenty-one years. Oe joined the Imperial Japanese Army in 1939. Sueo was killed in action during the Battle of Wake Island at the tragically young age of 27 on December 24, 1941.
