In summer 2017, after a brilliant season at RC Celta, Sevilla FC gave him the opportunity to lead an elite European club. Methodical and serene, he was tasked with building a new team under severe pressure, something unfamiliar to him. Berizzo's mission ended poorly, and the Andalusian club sacked him before Christmas. During his spell at Sevilla FC, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer and had to undergo treatment, subsequently missing some matchdays in the first round of LaLiga. In May 2018, Athletic Club announced the Argentine as their new manager, doing so after talking to Marcelo Bielsa, who highly recommended his disciple to the Basque side. Berizzo's style could well be one that leaves a mark at San Mamés.
