Requiem (II) (2021)
6/10
The horror of homophobia.
23 June 2023
'Requiem (2021)' is a short film set in England during the witch trials. It follows a young woman who must navigate her homophobic surroundings, including her devout priest father, to be with the woman she loves. Though there are stretches that feel somewhat dull and the pace is generally rather slow, the picture has a convincing period aesthetic and an equally tangible atmosphere. It features several solid performances, with lead actor Bella Ramsey doing most of the legwork, and its ending is actually really affecting. It's a profoundly sad story overall, one that unfortunately remains relevant to this day. It's perhaps a tad too long, but its ultimate effect is worth the wait.
