Chushingura (1962)
7/10
Extremely long, but still compelling

I've heard of this story for a while, and knew it had been adapted to a number of films. However, I was always putting off watching one, seeing as most are about 3 to 4 hours long (and sorry, I like Keanu, but I've always heard that the 2013 version is pretty bad, so that wasn't really an option to me).

Finally getting around to this 1962 version, and I think I liked it quite a bit. Some parts were a lot more gripping than others, and I feel like there was a point where it felt like it had bitten off more than it could chew. However, then the final act kicked into gear, and it made some of the slower scenes worth it. This film ends well, even if the plot summaries tend to say what happens (I guess it's based on historical events, and might be common knowledge).

For fans of action epics, I could recommend this, even if there's very little action until the last half-hour. It also has a seriously impressive cast, though that probably goes without saying.
