Robyn McCall will continue righting wrongs for another season.
CBS has ordered a fifth season of The Equalizer, its drama series starring Queen Latifah (who also executive produces) as McCall, a former CIA operative turned freelance problem solver for people who have nowhere else to turn. The show is a reimagining of the 1985-89 series of the same name and not connected to the Denzel Washington-led film franchise that’s also inspired by the original series.
With the renewal, The Equalizer will pass the original series in the number of seasons it has aired (though not yet in episode count — the 1980s series ran for 88 episodes, and the current show will end this season with 56).
With the pickup of The Equalizer, CBS has only one scripted series — NCIS: Hawai’i — awaiting word on its future. The network plans to announce its 2023-24 schedule on May 2.

When Ncuti Gatwa makes his first appearance as the 15th Doctor in the science-fiction series “Doctor Who,” he isn’t wearing any pants.
In a 60th-anniversary special released in December, the previous Doctor — played by series icon David Tennant — subverts the show’s long-standing practice of regeneration: Instead of simply transforming into the next Doctor, he literally splits in half, bringing Gatwa’s Doctor into the world alongside him. In the process, the two divide the clothes of Tennant’s Doctor between them, leaving Gatwa in nothing but a dress shirt and a pair of tighty-whities.
“Oh, my God, that first costume fitting!

After well over a decade in the spotlight, Community star Gillian Jacobs surely must get tired of people mangling her first name, which is pronounced with a hard G — as in “gall.” Which is exactly what After Midnight’s closed captioning system, or the people behind it, exhibited when Jacobs introduced herself on Monday night’s show.
After a brief introduction from After Midnight host Taylor Tomlinson, Jacobs greeted the crowd with a quick primer on exactly how to pronounce her name: “Yes, I’m Gillian Jacobs,” she said. “That’s hard G, soft J, but the vibe is just right.”
It was an innocuous enough statement… unless you were reading the closed captions.
As first spotted by one eagle-eyed Redditor who was able to snap a quick pic, the vibe may have seemed a bit more salacious if you weren’t actually listening to Jacobs speak.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Girls on the Bus Season 1, Episode 8, “Life is a Highway.”] The Girls on the Bus has tackled a number of topical subjects over its run so far on Max, but none more frustrating than journalist Sadie’s (Melissa Benoist) quest to secure abortion pills in the episode, “Life is a Highway.” After discovering she’d become pregnant after a spontaneous hook-up with an on-again-off-again fling, Malcolm, a.k.a. Loafers (Brandon Scott), Sadie’s clock for an abortion began ticking as she opted to go with pills. The trouble with that? She is constantly traveling through different states where laws differ. Due to this metaphorical roadblock, Sadie was forced to cross state lines with the help of conservative reporter Kimberlyn (Christina Elmore) as she went to pick up the mailed pills in a P.O. Box. The only problem? She didn’t make it to the post office in time,...

We are living for Dead Boy Detectives. In Netflix‘s cheeky new dramedy, the supernatural duo created by Neil Gaiman and introduced in The Sandman graphic novels jumps from page to screen, thanks to the utterly lovely chemistry between stars George Rexstrew and Jayden Revri. And to prove that Dead men do tell tales, we asked the guys to explain what’s up with their best mates from the beyond. “My character’s called Edwin Payne, and in 1916, he died as the result of a demonic summoning ritual gone very, very wrong. And that sent him to Hell for 70 years,” offers relative newcomer Rexstrew. “He managed to escape and shortly after his escape, he went back to his old school, St. Hilorian’s, where he died and came across Charles, who was on the cusp of death. Edwin actually nursed him in his final few hours, and when Charles died,...

When composing the score for Netflix’s “Unfrosted,” Christophe Beck had a simple request from the film’s writer, director and star Jerry Seinfeld: “For everything to be just a little bit extra,” says Beck.
Set in the 1960s, “Unfrosted” is the Pop-Tarts origin story. Seinfeld plays the Kellogg’s employee who helps the company beat its rival, Post, in the breakfast pastry race. Beck used music to emphasize the optimism of American innovation. “I found it effective to inhabit a particular character in a scene, imagine what they were feeling in that moment, and then exaggerate it to a pretty extreme effect,...

Leanne Morgan, the comedian whose stand-up special I’m Every Woman brought the downhome, relatable laughs, will become a sitcom matriarch now that Netflix has ordered 16 episodes of an as-yet-untitled multicamera series, in which she’ll star and serve as co-creator and executive producer. The scripted comedy series is co-created by Morgan and prolific TV comedy writer and producer Chuck Lorre (The Big Bang Theory), whose most recent project for Netflix is the Golden Globe–winning The Kominsky Method.
Untitled Leanne Morgan Project will kick off with Leanne’s life taking an unexpected turn when her husband of 33 years leaves her for another woman. [Editor’s note: Spoilers for the Season 1 finale of “Diarra from Detroit” below.]
By the time the Season 1 finale of “Diarra from Detroit” draws to a satisfying conclusion, Diarra (and we) have been through a lot. And the episode brings the tangled mystery to such an adroit close (while leaving enough unanswered questions to fuel a second season) that surely its structure was always part of the show’s DNA.
Nah, that’s not how TV works. Luckily, showrunner and star Diarra Kilpatrick knows how to pivot.
“We didn’t have the budget to shoot Episode 8 as it was originally written and conceived,” Kilpatrick told IndieWire. “Sometimes creativity comes from limitations.”
Diarra’s reconciliation with Swa (Morris Chestnut) proves to be short-lived when she finally solves the mystery of why he abruptly asked for an open marriage (to misdirect her away from learning about the vasectomy he’d had years ago!). Burying her feelings once again with the case,...

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for Survivor Season 46 Episode 9.] Idol this, idol that. Jeff Probst says that promising to play an idol is a big nothing burger in Survivor. His comments come after Hunter was eliminated in Survivor Season 46 Episode 9 with an idol in his pocket, despite having sworn to other players that he was going to play it for himself in tribal council that night. Promises like this, Probst says, are complete “nonsense.” Probst revealed his feelings about idol promises in the On Fire podcast released after Episode 9 aired on CBS on April 24. He told his co-hosts, Survivor fan Jay Wolff and Season 45 winner Dee Valladares, that he knows as much about what players are going to do with their idols as fans: “Nothing.” As the host and showrunner, however, he knows “who has an idol for sure.” In his 20+ years with the show, one thing is certain: “It’s extremely rare when a player...

While it’s case closed for theDead Boy Detectives’ supernatural adventures in Season 1, there’s still plenty of mysteries to unravel — and we have some questions.
Over the course of eight episodes, the ghost teens behind the Dead Boy Detectives agency — early 1900s young gentleman Edwin Payne (George Rexstrew) and 1980s “rude boy” Charles Rowland (Jayden Revri) — have assisted spirits stuck in the living world with their biggest challenges. They’ve seen it all: paranormal parasites, déjà vu in a haunted house, and even a butcher shop date gone awry.
With the help of their totally alive friend, the clairvoyant Crystal Palace (Kassius Nelson), and her bubbly bud Niko (Yuyu Kitamura), the boys also faced down evil witch Esther Finch (Jenn Lyon). But she’s not the only evil out there.

Neil Gaiman doesn’t create singular worlds. Instead, he produces an entire universe held together by the gravitational force of his imagination.
Dead Boy Detectives, the new series based on Gaiman’s teenage ghost duo Edwin Payne (George Rexstrew) and Charles Rowland (Jayden Revri), exists within the same narrative reality as The Sandman. The undead detectives solve mysteries and fight demons and witches, while trying to evade the attention of Death (Kirby) herself. The series, developed for television by Steve Yockey — who serves as co-showrunner alongside Beth Schwartz — lives on its own, but the influence of The Sandman radiates throughout.
“I grew up reading Sandman and Books of Magic and Children's Crusade and Dead Boy Detectives and all the sort of Vertigo imprint stuff for DC Comics,” Yockey tells Tudum. “I found Dead Boys when I was going through a particularly difficult loss in my life and just found it...

First things first: The attention-seeking creatures that inhabit Niko (Yuyu Kitamura) in Dead Boy Detectives have names, thank you very much — Litty (Caitlin Reilly) and Kingham (Max Jenkins). So if you even think about calling them Sprite 1 and Sprite 2, they’ll find it really offensive and roast you into oblivion. Actually, they’ll do that anyway.
We meet the 2-inch-tall, foul-mouthed Sprites in Episode 2, “The Case of the Dandelion Shrine,” when the Dead Boy Detectives help remove the paranormal parasites from Niko’s body and trap them in an enchanted jar. From their fishbowl prison, the Sprites lovingly taunt Niko and her friends for the rest of the season. (Particularly memorable digs include Kingham comparing Niko’s face to “roadkill.”) Think of them as the series’ savage Greek chorus, commenting on the goings-on of the characters and cases.

In Season of Mists, the fourth volume of The Sandmancomics series, Neil Gaiman penned a ghost story set in a British boarding school to demonstrate the problems being caused by Lucifer’s plan to get back at Dream. Gaiman liked the characters enough that he brought them back for a Vertigo Comics crossover event, and they wound up receiving their own spin-off comic from Toby Litt and Mark Buckingham.
Now, the Dead Boy Detectives are receiving their own show from Steve Yockey and Beth Schwartz. Set in the same universe as The Sandman, this series follows all the zany thrills and heartwarming moments of Charles (Jayden Revri) and Edwin’s (George Rexstrew) adventures solving supernatural mysteries that no one else can, with the help of clairvoyant Crystal (Kassius Nelson) and new friend Niko (Yuyu Kitamura).
“Charles was more or less me as a boy,” executive producer and Sandman author Gaiman tells Tudum.

“The Jinx” filmmaker Andrew Jarecki was living out a personal “The Journalist and the Murderer” saga when Robert Durst was on the run.
During the latest post-episode “Official Jinx Podcast” for “The Jinx — Part Two,” Jarecki and executive producer Zac Stuart-Pontier revealed that they were concerned for their safety between seasons of their HBO docuseries, before the fleeing Durst was apprehended by authorities.
“I said to them, ‘I think there’s a risk to me. And I’m Ok with that, but I’d like to have a plan in place if anything weird happens,’” Jarecki said of telling the FBI. “And then I remember calling up my guy and having him say, ‘Yeah, we really have no idea where he is.’ And I said, ‘Well, how’s that possible? [Warning: This post contains Major spoilers for The Circle Season 6, Episodes 1-8.] For its newest season, Netflix‘s original reality competition series took drastic measures to shake things up. The Circle Season 6, which premiered with its first four episodes on April 17, featured an artificial intelligence contender in addition to multiple catfishing contestants. Things were looking dour for the humans in the crew, since they were completely convinced by Max’s computerized persona… Could the AI win it all? However, when Netflix dropped its second round of episodes on April 24, Max withdrew himself (itself?) from the competition, revealing that Max was not a dog dad but a Cpu no bigger than a purse. That left Brandon aka “Olivia,” Cassie, Carress aka “Paul,” Kyle, Lauren, Steffi, and Quori Tyler aka Qt. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Kyle ultimately decided to take out Steffi and was surprised to find out she really was just a yoga- and zodiac-loving little weirdo with a plastic skeleton bestie. After ...

The show looks to offer some more thrilling drama work from its highly decorated lead Elisabeth Moss, including a convincing British accent, some intense fighting sequences (at least one stunt caused Moss to fracture two of her vertebrae), and a chameleonic array of character faces. But is this new international spy series based on a true story? Here’s a look at what we know about the show so far. Is The Veil based on a true story? While some elements of the story are certainly plucked from real life — for example, Western worries about the potential for terrorist attacks and inter-agency disagreements — The Veil is an original story written by Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders). So no, it is not based on a true story. The concept, however, came from executive producer Denise Di Novi,...

“The Sandman,” Neil Gaiman’s classic supernatural comic turned Netflix series, is a sweeping epic in which abstract concepts like Dream (Tom Sturridge) and Death (Kirby) take human form, traversing Earth and the astral plane to settle matters of metaphysical importance. Spinoffs of successful shows often lower the stakes; even “House of the Dragon” merely deals with a continent-spanning civil war, not the potential end of all human life at the hands of ice zombies. Pretty much any stakes would be lower than those of “The Sandman,” but the franchise’s first attempt at expansion scales down to a charmingly...
