When excluding sports, it’s averaging 4.99 million viewers in primetime, per Nielsen data, up 14% year over year. The milestone marks broadcast television’s longest winning streak on record since 1955-1970, which was also previously held by CBS.
CBS currently has the top seven shows on broadcast, which include “Tracker” with an average of 10.84 million viewers; “Matlock” with 9.53 million; “60 Minutes” with 8.45 million; “FBI” with 8.11 million, “Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage” with 7.98 million; “Blue Bloods” with 7.9 million and “NCIS” with 7.86 million.
It also touts eight of the 10 top shows, which include the above seven and “Elsbeth”; four of the top five new shows; and the top two comedies (“Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage” and “Ghosts”).

Here’s an Emmys surprise for you.
The Perfect Couple, the six-episode Netflix murder-mystery starring Nicole Kidman that was a huge hit for the streamer upon its release on Sept. 5, 2024, is being submitted for Emmys consideration not in the limited/anthology series categories, where most pundits assumed it would compete, but rather in the drama series categories, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
That’s because “Queen of the Beach Read” Elin Hilberbrand, from whose 2018 bestselling novel Jenna Lamia created and Susanne Bier directed the show, has written additional books that could also be adapted into an additional season or seasons. Netflix declined to comment on that possibility but confirmed the aforementioned submission decision.
It all makes sense, given just how popular The Perfect Couple was. Indeed, the show spent six weeks in the service’s global top 10 of English-language TV shows; broke into the top 10 TV shows in 92 countries; and...

Cannes — Blessed for most part by balmy weather, French TV fest Canneseries launched a new life this week, staging its first standalone edition without a parallel MipTV or Mipcom supplying a big buyer base sitting literally just yards from Canneseries screenings.
Canneseries Artistic Director Albin Lewi argued before Canneseries that the event is not about on-site buyers but “buzz,” “the word of mouth of being in selection, even if buyers are not on-site, is very important. Comedian Amber Ruffin explained why she was axed from Saturday’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Tuesday night’s episode of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”
Ruffin was originally slated to headline the Whc Dinner, joining a long line of comedians who traditionally help break the ice for an otherwise buttoned-up event. However, after a White House deputy chief of staff raised concerns about Ruffin’s critical comments about Donald Trump, the White House Correspondents’ Association removed her from the event in an effort to “ensure the focus is not on the politics of division,” according to the organization.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Rookie Season 7 Episode 16 “The Return.”] Apparently, all it took for Seth (Patrick Keleher) to be honest with his coworkers was getting fired, returning to find everyone shunning him, trying to prove himself, and getting seriously injured and losing his leg as a result on the job. “He was so blatantly honest,” Keleher tells TV Insider as part of our Booked: The Rookie Aftershow for the Tuesday, April 29, episode. “This is the only time, I think, pretty much the entire season where he has to leave it all out on the table, and he finally tells the truth.” Seth returns to work, and no one’s happy about it, to the point that everyone turns their backs on him when he walks into the station. “I had to leave to go to New York because I was doing a play called Fatherland, and we did an off-Broadway run, and that was my conflict,...

CBS is experimenting with its own sense of space and time: The network’s drama “Einstein,” recently ordered to series and targeted for next season, will be instead be held until the following year.
That means the Matthew Gray Gubler starrer, which was first ordered as a pilot in August 2024, won’t actually hit the airwaves until two years later — during the 2026-2027 TV season. Per CBS, the reason is that there just wasn’t room for “Einstein” during the upcoming 2025-2026 frame.

Spoiler Alert: This post contains spoilers from “This Place Is Our Everything,” the Season 1 finale of NBC’s “St. Denis Medical,” now streaming on Peacock.
A big change is coming to St. Denis Medical, just as long as the ceiling doesn’t cave in.
All season, hospital executive director Joyce (Wendi McLendon-Covey) has gone to great lengths, often to the chagrin of her employees, to bring renown and resources to the Oregon hospital. But in the Season 1 finale, she took a major step in that direction, securing $10 million to further her plans, even though she immediately starts promising it away to the needs of others.

St. Denis Medical has scrubbed out for the season, with a notably different ending than showrunner Eric Ledgin had initially planned. And he’s totally cool with that.
The NBC medical comedy closed out its freshman run on Tuesday night, with a literal perfect storm of circumstances at the hospital forcing Alex (Allison Tolman) to scurry back and forth between helping her fellow nurses and sitting by her husband’s side for his imminent vasectomy on a different floor of the building. (“Ooh, a Mrs. Doubtfire situation. That always ends well,” Ron warned Alex of her attempt to be in both places.

AMC‘s Interview With the Vampire only gets better with age. One of TV’s most confident shows has known exactly what story it’s telling since the very first episode, as proven in part by narrative seeds laid in Season 1 that wouldn’t come to fruition until the end of Season 2. Prime Video‘s new series Étoile keeps with Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino‘s tradition by incorporating pop culture references and even some big cameos throughout the Prime Video show’s first season. As viewers see, David Byrne of Talking Heads fame makes a cameo as himself in a Zoom conversation with choreographer Tobias Bell (Gideon Glick), and fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi portrays himself as a moderator in a conversation with star ballerina Cheyenne (Lou de Laâge). P!nk was also mentioned but not seen during a press conference scene in the new show. “Isaac’s my new best friend, so I wanted him in Paris with us,” Sherman-Palladino explains of the inclusion of Mizrahi. “We did it on Gilmore [Girls], and we dropped what we could on Maisel, but you had to be in the 1950s to know what you’re talking about,” she adds of making pop culture references onscreen.

For emerging cinematographers, understanding how the “X” trilogy, “I Saw the TV Glow,” and “Midsommar” adapted lighting, lenses, formats, and color science to evoke fear and beauty is essential. These DPs didn’t just point and shoot; they designed entire emotional systems.

An actor who decides to direct may inspire an eyeroll: Well, of course they can. After leading a hit show, what producer will say no?
A powerful actor who wants to direct has an advantage others won’t. At the same time, to become directors Tyler James Williams, Ayo Edebiri, Jason Bateman, and Rhea Seehorn had to be willing to step away from the comfort zone of their expertise and see themselves as beginners.
They also took advantage of a Hollywood truism: People work with people they know, and the only way to make yourself known is to be excellent around the people who can hire you to do the work. It’s the same logic that creates a script supervisor-director (Karyn Kusama), a Pa-producer (Kevin Feige), or an art coordinator-Oscar-winning production designer (Hannah Beachler).
Here’s what these actors say they learned while making the transition.

Chef Jamie Oliver’s story, at least in terms of his rise to fame with “The Naked Chef,” is a story about filmmaking. He and the BBC Two documentary crew behind the series broke with the studio-based, locked down and orderly conventions of cooking shows to shoot Oliver a lot more in the style of a documentary — lots of handheld, verite footage and the sense, well before ring-lit YouTube tutorials and Twitch muckbangs, of cooking with a mate.
It’s a fitting detail to come up during Oliver’s episode of “Chef’s Table: Legends” because over the course of its 10 seasons, the Netflix series has itself reshaped the landscape of documentary food programming. “Chef’s Table” embraces a visual approach that owes more to narrative-style cinematography as it does to the conventions of documentary.
