Warner Bros. is doubling down on the business of Timothée Chalamet. The studio signed a multi-year feature film deal with the actor to collaborate on future projects as a star and producer.
Chalamet led back-to-back box office hits for Warner Bros. with last December’s “Wonka” ($632 million globally) and this March’s “Dune: Part Two” ($575 million globally and counting). According to the studio, he became the first actor in four decades to star in the top two domestic films that were released in eight months.
Chalamet will enjoy a salary bump after those box office riches. The actor earned more than $8 million for “Wonka,” according to sources. Now, he’s looking at paydays in the double digits for leading roles in studio films.
Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy, co-chairs and CEOs of Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, said they are “thrilled that [Chalamet] has chosen our studio to be his creative home.

The Busan International Film Festival has postponed the appointment of a permanent festival director. A new leader may be appointed after this year’s edition in October.
Pak Dosin, a former senior programmer, has been appointed as co-deputy director in a dual-leadership structure, alongside co-deputy director Kang Seung-ah.
That means that this year’s festival will be held under the leadership of chairperson Park Kwang-su, the recently appointed Acfm director Ellen Y. D. Kim, and the co-deputy directors Kang and Pak.
“This decision aims to allocate resources effectively by reducing the administrative processes and time needed to elect the festival director and enabling undivided attention towards successfully organizing the 29th Busan International Film Festival. After this year’s event, Biff will select its next festival director, allowing ample time to seek the most suitable candidate,” the festival said in a statement on Thursday.

The Locarno retro, titled “The Lady With the Torch –– The Centenary of Columbia Pictures,” is being curated by Ehsan Khoshbakht, co-director of Italy’s Il Cinema Ritrovato festival, which is dedicated to cinematic treasures of the past and organized in partnership with Switzerland’s Cinémathèque Suisse. While Kristen Stewart has had her moments in indie movies as well as blockbusters, the actress revealed that she will “likely never” star in a Marvel film unless one specific person asked her.
The Love Lies Bleeding star said on a recent episode of the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast that making a superhero movie “sounds like a fucking nightmare, actually.”
When host Amanda Hirsch told Stewart that she could see her playing Mary Jane “Mj” Watson from the Spider-Man comic, the actress clarified that she does “like big movies because I like people to watch them when I’m in them.”
But she added that the “system would have to change. You would have to put so much money and so much trust into one person … and it doesn’t happen. And so therefore what ends up happening is this algorithmic, weird experience where you can’t feel personal at all about it.

“Hey guys, how are you doing? I know I’ve dropped off for a little bit, but that’s partially because I was whisked off to Atlanta to shoot a movie that I’m not really supposed to talk about,” Pugh said in a video posted to Instagram. “But I can show you things, sneakily, as long as you don’t tell anyone … I can show you a sneak peek of the set.”

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire star Dan Stevens truly has a spring in his step right now.
Over the next 37 days, the English actor has three unique genre films hitting theaters, beginning with Friday’s Godzilla x Kong, which marks his long-awaited reunion with his The Guest director, Adam Wingard. Netflix is debuting its Prince Andrew film Scoop on April 5, with Rufus Sewell starring as the royal, Gillian Anderson as the BBC host whose interview got the prince in trouble and Billie Piper as a booker-producer on the news show. The stars came together in London on Wednesday for the world premiere of the movie to discuss what makes it “a nailbiter” despite its well-known fallout.
Anderson and Sewell recently shared that they initially didn’t want to play their respective parts. Anderson portrays former BBC Newsnight host Emily Maitlis in the film, which provides a behind-the-scenes look into the November 2019 Newsnight interview with Prince Andrew about his ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Piper plays Sam McAlister, who used to work for the show behind the scenes.

One of the most infamous reviews for David Lynch’s “Blue Velvet” to publish when the film opened in 1986 came courtesy of Roger Ebert, who gave the movie one star. Then the most prominent critic in the United States, Ebert criticized how Lynch’s casting of Isabella Rossellini in a role where she gets “humiliated.”
“[Rossellini] is asked to do things in this film that require real nerve … She is degraded, slapped around, humiliated and undressed in front of the camera,” Ebert wrote. “And when you ask an actress to endure those experiences, you should keep your side of the bargain by putting her in an important film.”
Rossellini stars in “Blue Velvet” as the tormented nightclub singer Dorothy Vallens, who is held emotionally and physically captive by the sociopath gangster Frank Booth (Dennis Hopper). At one point in the film, Dorothy shows up naked on the front porch of Jeffrey...

Ramy Youssef searches for his own superlative in this week’s Saturday Night Live trailer, struggling to find a diversity “first-ever” that hasn’t yet been taken.
“I’m Ramy Youssef, and I’m honored to be the first-ever Arab host of Saturday Night Live,” the comedian says at the trailer’s start, before castmember Kenan Thompson interrupts: “You’re actually not the first [Arab] to host.”
Dissuaded, Youssef tries again: “I’m thrilled to be the first-ever Egyptian host of Saturday Night Live.”
Again, Thompson tells him he’s incorrect. At this, Youssef tries to go specific: “I am thrilled to be the first-ever Egyptian host named Ramy to host Saturday Night Live.”
Again, Thompson tells Youssef he is still incorrect, citing past SNL host Rami Malek.
Youssef then embarks on a monologue of self-reflection: “Whatever, man. Whatever,” he said. “Who cares about being first — it’s dumb. Anyway, it...

The first major running mate announcement of the 2024 presidential election cycle came much earlier than usual this week, as White House hopeful Robert F. Kennedy Jr. held an Oakland rally to make the big announcement, concluding weeks of speculation by introducing the young political neophyte to the nation and revealing that he may just have found the ideal addition to his long-shot ticket.
Nicole Shanahan — criminal justice attorney, Silicon Valley philanthropist, possible billionaire divorcée — is a native of Oakland who may just have the ideal rags-to-riches backstory for a political newcomer. Shanahan has spoken about growing up with a family that relied on food benefits and being raised by a schizophrenic father who had lifelong addiction issues. On Tuesday, she told the crowd of her days as an attorney, after completing a law degree a decade ago at Santa Clara University School of Law, working with artificial intelligence to push...

Tuesday was not a good day for Ronna McDaniel — or, is it Ronna Romney McDaniel again, as she now admits the 2020 election was not stolen? She went from a high-profile gig on NBC to no gig and no agent, as CAA also dropped her.
It was also a bad day for NBC News Group chairman Cesar Conde, who found it necessary to “personally apologize to our team members who felt we let them down.” Conde didn’t exactly fall on his sword by himself; he mentioned in his letter to staff that this was “a collective recommendation by some members of our leadership team.” But he acknowledged that the buck stopped with him.
At least McDaniel is getting a payout. So, no harm, no foul, right? Well, not exactly. This was hardly the simple loss of a job, as the fallout at NBC has made it impossible for her to...

There has been no shortage of television series centering the horrors of the Holocaust. Last year alone, Netflix’s “Transatlantic” depicted a group of resistors living in Marseille, and National Geographic’s “A Small Light” offered a retelling of Anne Frank’s experience through the eyes of Miep Gies, the woman who aided the Franks during their years in hiding. Though both of these series and those like them are important, Hulu’s “We Were the Lucky Ones,” an adaptation of Georgia Hunter’s best-selling novel based on a true story, showcases something different. The show chronicles a family torn apart by war and hatred.

Robert Durst is back as an HBO subject with the follow-up to the bombshell 2015 docuseries The Jinx.
The Jinx — Part Two, which is coming April 21 and nearly a decade after the first installment, is a six-episode continuation of Andrew Jarecki’s Emmy-winning docuseries, The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst, that made Durst a household name and kicked off the ongoing wave of true-crime docuseries.
The New York real estate heir was arrested on first-degree murder charges for the death of his best friend, Susan Berman — less than 24 hours before the Jinx finale aired in an episode that shocked the country when Durst, who was unknowingly still mic’d, is heard saying, “What did I do? Killed them all, of course.”
After an ensuing trial, Durst was convicted for the first-degree murder of Berman in September 2021, and later sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

Will Smith may have fallen in love with Stockard Channing on the set of 1993’s Six Degrees of Separation, but Channing only felt “motherly” to the rising star, who was 23 and a newly married, first-time father at the time.
Channing — who earned an Oscar nomination playing a New York socialite who connects with a young con artist played by Smith in the film — opened up about working with the rising star in a new episode of The Hollywood Reporter‘s It Happened in Hollywood podcast.
“He made a lot [of money] from his music, or even Fresh Prince [of Bel-Air],” Channing said. “Because I remember we talked about it.” Despite his massive success in music and TV at a young age, “there was no big shot stuff at all” about Smith, she said.
“He had a real survival instinct in him,” Channing added, “which was completely perfect for the part. [There was a] genuine charm and a lovely sweetness about him.

S&P Global has officially downgraded Paramount Global debt to junk status at Bb+, from Bbb-, or one level below investment grade.
The credit rating agency made the move on “weak credit metrics,” with a stable outlook. The downgrade comes a month after Paramount was put on a negative watch by S&P Global for a possible credit rating downgrade over weaker cash flow concerns as the major studio pivots from linear TV to the streaming space.
“Paramount will need to execute its plan to substantially improve streaming losses over the next two years to mitigate further downside ratings pressure. Paramount’s current credit metrics are weak for the ‘Bb+’ rating,” S&P Global said in commentary accompanying the debt downgrade.
The Shari Redstone-controlled media conglomerate is battling to replace lost linear TV revenues with streaming and other digital revenues as it responds to fast-changing consumer TV viewing habits.

Injecting traces of whimsy into a historical tragedy is a precarious thing. If you do it well, you get Anthony Doerr’s All the Light We Cannot See, but if you do it poorly, you get Netflix’s All the Light We Cannot See. And it isn’t some clear-cut empirical thing, since Life Is Beautiful and Jojo Rabbit are Oscar-winning classics for some and unbearable pablum to others. (Me, I am Others.)

Maciek Hamela’s In The Rearview, a documentary that follows the stories of Ukrainians forced to flee the war, has won best film at the 2024 Vilnius Film Festival.
The Vilnius jury picked the “touching documentary” for its top prize in a unanimous vote. Filmed in the first days following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the film tells stories of trauma, loss and humanity as it follows a small van that crisscrosses the war-torn country, picking up Ukrainians as they are forced to abandon their homes at the front and shuttling them across the battered landscape into exile.
“In the backseat of the vehicle, the refugees talk about what they had to leave behind — their house, their animals, their family and their belief in a peaceful life — filling it with the fate of an entire nation,” the Vilnius said in its statement. “On its way out, it passes ruins, soldiers and tanks.

Filmmakers Farah Nabulsi and Darin J. Sallam recently came together to discuss how ongoing violence in Gaza has impacted the Palestinian creative community, the hardships they’ve endured telling their stories, concerns over Hollywood censorship and hopes that film can “preserve” Palestinian history for the Muslim Girl Code podcast‘s debut episode “Will Storytelling Save Palestine?”
In a conversation with MuslimGirl.com founder Amani Al-Khatahtbeh for the podcast’s first Ramadan episode, Nabulsi and Sallam shared how their identities as Palestinian women have influenced the stories they spotlight, and whether identity or gender has been a barrier for them in the film industry.
Nabulsi, a British-Palestinian filmmaker whose recent works include the Oscar-nominated short “The Present” and “The Teacher,” notes that the difficulties she has faced more often have been due to independent cinema being a challenge in itself and that the stories she wants to tell are Palestinian and...

Days after Rebel Wilson spoke out about Sacha Baron Cohen being an “asshole” who threatened her for mentioning his alleged mistreatment in her upcoming memoir Rebel Rising, People magazine shared an excerpt from the book with the relevant chapter.
The Pitch Perfect star wrote that she and Baron Cohen first met at a dinner party in 2013. He then asked her to appear as his character’s girlfriend, Dawn Grobham, in the 2016 comedy The Brothers Grimsby, which besides starring in, Baron Cohen also co-wrote and produced.
“It felt like every time I’d speak to Sbc, he’d mention that he wanted me to go naked in a future scene, I was like, ‘Ha, I don’t do nudity, Sacha,'” recalled Wilson from her time on set with the multihyphenate.
Wilson wrote that while filming at a soccer stadium in Cape Town, Baron Cohen had a production assistant tell the...

Christina Applegate is opening up about learning hard lessons when she had breast cancer in 2008.
The Dead to Me actress stopped by Dax Shephard’s Armchair Expert podcast where she discussed not being vulnerable and honest about what she was feeling after her diagnosis and double mastectomy.
“I learned that lesson the hard way because, in 2008, when I had breast cancer at 36 years old, I went out, and I was the good girl talking about, ‘Oh, I love my new boobs that are all scarred and fucked up.’ What was I thinking?” she said.
She explained that her first interview after learning she had cancer was with Robin Roberts, and she lied the whole time about how she was feeling. Once it was over, she got up and “literally fell into the wall.”
“Everything I was saying was a freaking lie,” Applegate continued. “It was me trying to convince myself of something,...

Charlie Huston will pen the script, which is based on his book of the same name. Protozoa will produce.
