The Cannes Film Festival will award legendary Japanese anime house Studio Ghibli with its honorary Palme d’Or this year, the first time Cannes has given its highest award to a company instead of an individual.
“For the first time in our history, it’s not a person but an institution that we have chosen to celebrate,” said Cannes Festival president Iris Knobloch and general delegate Thierry Frémaux, announcing the honor on Wednesday. They praised Ghibli’s animated features as filled with characters who “populate our imaginations with prolific, colorful universes and sensitive, engaging narrations. With Ghibli, Japanese animation stands as one of the great adventures of cinephilia, between tradition and modernity.”
Founded in 1985 by Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, Toshio Suzuki, and Yasuyoshi Tokuma, Studio Ghibli has in the past 40 years, “achieved what seemed to be an impossible feat: Independently producing pure masterpieces and conquering the mass market,” the festival said.

Talk about nepotism. “Abigail,” a blood-sucking thriller about the daughter of Dracula, arguably the most famous vampire in history, is poised to lead at the domestic box office.
The R-rated movie, from Universal Pictures, is aiming for $12 million to $15 million from 3,300 North American theaters in its first weekend of release. But “Abigail” first has to fend off last weekend’s champion, A24’s “Civil War,” before taking the box office crown. The provocative thriller debuted last weekend with $25.8 million and looks to bring in $10 million to $12 million in its sophomore outing.
Based on projections, “Abigail” will, however, dance circles around two fellow newcomers, director Guy Ritchie’s “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” and Crunchyroll’s anime adventure “Spy x Family Code: White.” Those films are targeting $5 million to $6 million, though rivals have pegged ticket sales ever-so-slightly higher at $8 million.

Pamela Anderson is dressing up for Naked Gun.
The actor has signed on to star opposite Liam Neeson in Paramount Pictures’ untitled remake of Naked Gun, based on the crime spoof comedies that were released in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Akiva Schaffer is directing the comedy, which has a script by Dan Gregor, Doug Mand and Schaffer. The trio were behind the popular and Emmy-winning Disney+ movie Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers.
The original movie, written and directed by Jerry Zucker, Jim Abrahams and David Zucker and based on their television series Police Squad! that lasted only six episodes, spoofed the tropes of police shows and films that had ingrained themselves into audience’s minds over the decades. It centered on an inept and clueless detective named Frank Drebin, played by Leslie Nielsen, who still somehow managed to solve the crime and save the day.

By 2027, the Sundance Film Festival headquarters may no longer be in Park City, Utah, the festival’s home since 1985.
Sundance Institute has launched an open call for American cities to raise their hands as potential hosting grounds as of 2027. The request for Information (Rfi) process, which begins today, will include Utah. The Rfi does not mean Sundance has made a decision to move.
The Rfi closes May 1, with a Request for Proposal (Rfp) to run May 7-June 21. The Institute will announce its selection — whether in Utah or elsewhere — in the final quarter of 2024 or first quarter of 2025. The Rfi/Rfp process will target the usual January dates for the festival in 2027.
The 2025-2026 editions of the festival will take place in Park City. However, if Sundance wants to extend its contract with Park City beyond 2026, the deadline is October 2024. That already represents an extension of the original deadline, which was in March.

It’s hard to believe, talking to David Dastmalchian, that he’s starred in some of the most terrifying films of the last year. He seems too kind, too honest and open to be the kind of person responsible for scaring the wits out of people, whether as a quartermaster in The Last Voyage of the Demeter or an unsettling therapy patient in Stephen King’s The Boogeyman. While we chatted during the height of this year’s solar eclipse (at least where I was), it felt like we could’ve gone on forever, he in Canada (shooting Murderbot with Alexander Skarsgård) and I in New Orleans, talking about everything and nothing all at once.

Steven Spielberg and David Koepp took audiences on a wild ride back when Jurassic Park premiered on the big screen in 1993, with the adaptation cementing its place in blockbuster cinema history. According to Variety, the duo is back in business, with Spielberg and Koepp teaming up once again for an upcoming UFO movie. While a title for the movie hasn't been set, and details are sparse, the fact that the writer and director who brought one of the best blockbusters in history to life will work together once again should be exciting enough as an announcement, for now. Since Jurassic Park, Koepp and Spielberg have collaborated on a number of projects including War of the Worlds and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

What’s next for director Zack Snyder after his upcoming “Rebel Moon” part two sci-fi sequel? While the genre filmmaker has teased a possible third installment in the series, Snyder still has various projects in the oven and is still mulling over what gets made from that pack of contenders, including a sequel to his “Army Of The Dead” zombie movie. During a recent chat with Games Radar to promote the second half of “Rebel Moon,” Snyder was asked about some of the previous projects he had in development, such as a film inspired by the King Arthur mythology (Snyder is a big fan of John Boorman’s R-rated “Excalibur”), Horse Latitudes (a long-gestating Afghan War pic formerly known as “The Last Photograph”), and his sexualized take on Alexander The Great in “Blood & Ashes” too (Snyder once mused about making a George Washington action film).

Filmmaker Steven Spielberg always moves fluidly from genre to genre, and perhaps there’s no better example than the recent 30th anniversary of 1993’s “Schindler’s List,” which was released the same year as the couldn’t-be-totally-different “Jurassic Park.” And so, coming off his grounded and very personal family drama, “The Fabelmans,” for his next film, Spielberg might be going back to the sci-fi genre again.

When The Real Housewives of Atlanta casting team announced they’d hired four-time Olympic gold medalist, Sanya Richards-Ross, to join the Bravo franchise in Season 14 of the reality series, many were excited. It was an interesting choice considering her background and being new to the Atlanta area. The Jamaican-born track and field star was introduced as a friend of semi-newcomer, Drew Sidora, who'd joined the previous season. Their friendship unraveled when Richards-Ross accused Sidora of being messy and disingenuous. It shocked Sidora and fans, with some accusing Richards-Ross of squad-hopping and switching on Sidora to be part of the popular crew with the OGs of the show. But Richards-Ross insisted it wasn’t true.

"For All Mankind" is one of the best shows of the streaming era, as well as one of the best science-fiction shows of all time. The series takes place in an alternate reality where the Soviet Union lands on the Moon first, which kickstarts an escalating chain of events that puts humanity on a path to the stars. It serves as a grounded bridge between our reality and the sci-fi future of shows like "The Expanse" or "Star Trek." In just four seasons, the show's characters have gone from dealing with the complications of landing a craft on the Moon to the first armed conflict on the Moon, colonizing Mars, and even lassoing an asteroid.
It is a stunning achievement, though not a hugely surprising one considering the show comes from Ronald D. Moore, who already contributed greatly to the genre with his work on "Star Trek: The Next Generation,...

Guy Ritchie is no stranger to the tactful art of blending incredible history with his bombastic brand of action, but The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare ratchets it up to a whole new level. Inspired by the unbelievable true story of Operation Postmaster—a top-secret British operation to take out a key Nazi stronghold on the Spanish island of Fernando Po—Ritchie turns real-life heroics into jaw-dropping action sequences and unmitigated bloodshed led by a who’s who of Hollywood beefcakes. If you ever wondered what it might look like to watch Superman, Reacher, and Santanico Pandemonium beat up Nazis, then this movie is for you.

When FX's historical epic series, Shōgun, premieried earlier in the year, the series began to garner attention from audiences with some comparing the Japanese themed political drama to Game of Thrones, arguably one of the greatest television series ever made. Though both shows shared similarities with intricate political scheming and brutally violent scenes, given Shōgun's latest episode, there is an argument that both are equally great in their own right. Much of Shōgun has centered around the power struggle between the Minowara, Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) and the Council of Regents in Osaka headed by Lord Ishido Kazunari (Takehiro Hira). Now ahead of its final episode, FX has released a new trailer teasing Shōgun's ultimate showdown is about to happen.

Maher said “I don’t think he committed that crime” in reference to Dylan Farrow’s molestation allegation against Allen, adding: “There was two police investigations that exonerated him.”
“There’s these actors who won’t work with him anymore and some of them made movies with him are saying, ‘I regret doing that.’ What a bunch of pussies!” Maher said. “First of all, it’s a very improbable crime that they’re accusing him of. Plainly, the other party had motivation and [was] vindictive.”
Maher referenced the HBO documentary “Allen v. Farrow” and said it was all from Mia Farrow’s point of view, alluding that it can’t fully be trusted as an unbiased account of what allegedly happened between Woody Allen and his adopted daughter,...

After seven seasons and over 100 episodes, Young Sheldon filmed the final scene of the final episode. It was a bittersweet moment for the cast and crew of the show, which has been home for them for the past several years. When the spinoff of The Big Bang Theory started, the young cast members were far from teenagers and are now well into their teenage years. The day was emotional as they shared that the end had arrived and reflected on their shared time.

With France on its highest level of security alert amid geopolitical turmoil in Ukraine and the Middle East, organizers behind the Paris Olympics are still going ahead with ambitious plans to host the opening ceremony along the Seine river on July 26.
Emmanuel Macron, the president of France, said on Monday in an interview with French outlets Bfm TV and Rmc that the opening ceremony could relocate to an indoor location “depending on our analysis of the context.” “We have fallback scenarios. There are plan Bs and plan Cs,” Macron said, citing the Stade de France as an alternate location.
Under the current plans put together by Tony Estanguet, the gold-medal winning French athlete who presides over the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, as many as 10,500 athletes from all around the world will parade on boats along the six-kilometer Seine River. For 27 of the last 32 years, Ziffren Brittenham senior partner Clifford Gilbert-Lurie has served as one of the chairs of the Champions for Children’s gala dinner benefiting the Alliance for Children’s Rights, an experience he says is akin to throwing a wedding.

Major controversy hit the “Scream” franchise last year when lead actress Melissa Barrera was fired from the franchise following Pro-Palestinian/anti-genocide remarks that the actress made on social media, comments that Spyglass Entertainment viewed as antisemitic. Fans were confused, upset, and backlashed against the move, many angered by the way the series dumped her and then went back to re-casting original franchise stars Neve Campbell and Courtney Cox instead.

Every time a new season of Doctor Who is about to premiere, audiences are eager to find out what will happen in the Time Lord's new adventures. Unfortunately, the secrecy surrounding the series can sometimes lead to misinformation being spread, and Russell T. Davies finally addressed recent rumors that Millie Gibson, who plays the Doctor's next companion, Ruby Sunday, would be leaving the series after only one season. That won't be the case, as Davies explained during an interview with SFX Magazine (via Total Film). The showrunner directly addressed the future of Ruby Sunday, noting that she will be a crucial part of the next two seasons of the series:...

As seen in Survivor 45 and Survivor 46, having a split Tribal Council immediately after the tribe is merged is a bit of a detriment to strategy. Despite having only three original tribe members present, the Yanu Tribe came out unscathed. While it does cause an exciting scramble to occur following the Immunity Challenge, it throws a wrench into how the majority alliance would play the game. Tribal lines are thrown out the window as self-preservation is underway. While a similar twist did appear in Survivor 42, the merged tribe had a group vote under their belt already as tribal lines were already established. Plus, the first group's eliminated castaway was sitting in the jury box and thus, affected the next group's vote tremendously. Twists are welcome in the game of Survivor, but who are they really helping? The post-merge game of Survivor has changed, and the players are forced to play on their toes unlike ever before.

Walton Goggins is killing it in the new Prime show Fallout as The Ghoul, Aka Cooper Howard. His steely demeanor as the immortal creature and Western action star before the big blast almost makes you forget that he also can ham it up with the best of them in the comedy genre. Goggins was wise to get aboard the Danny McBride/HBO train that has produced three terrific comedy dramas. After Eastbound & Down and before The Righteous Gemstones, the actor starred alongside McBride in Vice Principals, which ran for two seasons in 2016 and 2017. As Lee Russell, he and McBride form a hilarious duo of children that only appear to be fully grown adults. As the titular vice principals, these are a crass and combustible couple of man-children. Goggins, in particular, is totally on form as one half of an absurd and harebrained set who will do anything to land...

From “Cooking Papa” and “Food Wars: Shokugeki No Soma” to “Delicious in Dungeon” and every Ghibli film in between, anime has a rich history of wholesome food porn. Yet even so, it might still come as a surprise to some fans of “Spy x Family” that the show’s first theatrical outing would revolve so heavily around a cooking competition.
It’s not just any cooking competition, mind you. After it looks like spy extraordinaire Loid Forger might be taken off Operation “Strix,” the mission that first brought his found family together, he decides to help his adopted daughter Anya win a coveted prize at Eden Academy, thereby ensuring that the Forgers can stay together for at least a little bit longer. The ever-perceptive Loid quickly realizes that the key to victory lies in making the principal’s favorite meal, a rather “elegant” pastry named Melemele. And so off the...

Steven Spielberg is one of the most influential and celebrated directors of all time. He helped define the blockbuster, established the look and feel of '80s genre fare, and gave us the best (and possibly only well-shot) big-budget studio musical of the last decade. But despite getting his start in science fiction, Spielberg has mostly distanced himself from the genre in the past decade or so.
Still, Spielberg has remained an ardent fan of the genre, praising recent gems such as "Godzilla Minus One" and proclaiming his fandom for Denis Villeneuve's "Dune: Part Two." Perhaps this has rekindled a passion for sci-fi in 77-year-old Spielberg, seeing as he's now getting ready to return to one of his favorite subjects — aliens.
According to Variety, Spielberg is likely going to "make his next project a UFO film based on his own original idea." David Koepp is writing the screenplay, according to the outlet's sources.

Martin Scorsese is taking on biopics of both Jesus and a music god: Frank Sinatra.
The Oscar-winning auteur is rumored to be once more developing a biopic based on the legendary crooner — a project Scorsese’s been associated with before — with longtime collaborator Leonardo DiCaprio in talks to portray Ol’ Blue Eyes himself. Variety reported the news. DiCaprio recently starred in Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and also led other Scorsese-helmed biopics like “The Wolf of Wall Street” and “The Aviator.”
Variety noted that Frank Sinatra’s daughter Tina Sinatra controls her father’s estate and hasn’t yet approved a film adaptation of his life story. However, Scorsese is already looking to cast both DiCaprio and fellow Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence in the film, with Lawrence portraying screen star Ava Gardner, who was Sinatra’s second wife after Nancy Barbato. Lawrence and DiCaprio co-starred in “Don’t Look Up.

"Killers of the Flower Moon" may have ended with a bittersweet final coda from Martin Scorsese, but the acclaimed octogenarian director clearly still has plenty of future projects on his plate. Variety just broke the news that Scorsese apparently has a Frank Sinatra biopic in the works, and while the filmmaker's reps declined to comment, the outlet claims he has none other than frequent leading man Leonardo DiCaprio in mind to play the lead. The filmmaker's take on the famous crooner's life also reportedly will include a major part for Jennifer Lawrence, who sources say will play Sinatra's second wife, Ava Gardner.

It's been a long time coming for fans of The Spiderwick Chronicles, as the series finally makes its long-awaited debut this week. Just under a year ago, the completed series was dropped by Disney+ before thankfully being acquired by the Roku Channel. The series, all eight episodes of which are available to stream starting April 19, is a terrific young adult fantasy adventure that incorporates just enough horror elements to keep things interesting. Under showrunner Aron Eli Coleite and director Kat Coiro, it updates the story where necessary, but most importantly, never loses sight of the spirit of the Holly Black and Tony Diterlizzi book series on which it is based.
