Among the world premieres are Italian director Ivan Gergolet’s debut fiction feature The Man Without Guilt, a Slovenia-Italy-Croatia co-production that received €140,000 in Eurimages funding last year. Gergolet’s documentary feature Dancing With Maria screened at Venice’s Critics’ Week in 2014 and was nominated for a European Film Award.

While the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival prides itself on showcasing choice European fare to global cinephiles, the last six years has seen the festival build its industry strand into one of the most attractive places in Central Europe to source regional talent. Dubbed Eastern Promises and steered by respected Head of Film Industry Office Hugo Rosák, the popular program promotes promising filmmakers from Central and Eastern Europe and the Middle East and connects them with distributors, sales agents, producers and festival programmers.

The movie comes on the heels of the Polish director’s short Time to Go, which competed for the Cannes Short Film Palme d’Or in 2017. Grzegorz Molda’s first feature revolves around a troubled youth and his hope for a fresh start. Molda’s short film Time to Go was presented in the Cannes Short Film Competition in 2017 and showcased his talent for directing actors as well as his affinity for a highly authentic, realistic style. In his upcoming feature, The Hatcher, he will be putting those skills to good use again. The story, penned by the helmer himself and Monika Powalisz, a Polish fiction and series writer, revolves around two characters. Marta is a tutor in a training flat, and Karol, her young charge, is serving his sentence in a young offenders’ institution. He wants a fresh start, and both his stay in the facility and Marta will help him.
