Michael Douglas is in terrific form as Benjamin Franklin in Apple TV’s new historical limited series “Franklin” but he isn’t the only actor to emerge with awards whispers whizzing through the air. Veteran actor Eddie Marsan features in a key supporting role as John Adams and delivers one of the finest performances of his career while also shining a new light onto a man that many actors have depicted before.
The limited series follows Franklin’s eight years in France as he tried to persuade King Louis XVI (Tom Pezier) to join the colonies’ cause and aid them in the American Revolutionary War. The scenes between Douglas and Marsan are nothing short of spectacular and Marsan nails his performance as Adams, as noted by critics.
Clint Worthington (Roger Ebert) noted: “Marsan’s energy as Adams is decidedly different from Paul Giamatti’s in Ellis’ original 2008 miniseries—“Franklin” feels...

Plot: In December 1776, Benjamin Franklin is world famous for his electrical experiments. But his passion and power are put to the test when he embarks on a secret mission to France—with the fate of American independence hanging in the balance.
Review: Of all the television and big screen depictions of the Revolutionary War and the early days of the United States, few have focused specifically on Benjamin Franklin. The scientist, inventor, scholar, and dignitary has been a key character in many projects, notably played by Tom Wilkinson in HBO’s John Adams and by Howard De Silva in the musical 1776, but always as a supporting player. Despite being one of the Founding Fathers and having his iconic visage gracing the one hundred dollar bill, the first narrative production centered on his life is just now being released. Franklin, an eight-episode limited series from AppleTV+ and ITV America, focuses on...

When he arrived in France in 1776, Benjamin Franklin had a sort of global fame that’s hard to completely fathom, given a world of slow-traveling news in which “social media” took the form of arduously printed and even more arduously distributed pamphlets. He’d been a diplomat, journalist, publisher and prolific inventor, but he was more widely known for semi-apocryphal things like “inventing” electricity, as well as his mastery of glib wisdom we’d call “sound bites” today.
Franklin’s mission, undertaken with no official governmental mandate, was to enlist France’s support — money, supplies, ships and soldiers — in the burgeoning war for American independence. His celebrity, particularly its more frivolous aspects (matched with an international perception of frivolous “Americans”), was both a boon and a disservice to his cause. It’s as if we sent MrBeast to negotiate peace in the Middle East, if MrBeast suffered from gout and...

Despite his fame in other historical adaptations and, you know, history, Benjamin Franklin doesn't really feature much in Hamilton, possibly the most well-known blend of American Revolutionary fact and fiction in recent years. But the kite-flying, phrase-spewing Founding Father is now the focus of an Apple TV+ drama starring Michael Douglas. Get all about the Benjamin here:
Not claiming to be a cradle to grave treatment of Franklin's life, Franklin – adapted from Stacy Schiff's book A Great Improvisation: Franklin, France, And The Birth Of America – instead focuses on one specific chunk, when he's tasked with a vital mission. As American independence hangs by a thread, conflict raging with Britain, he's dispatched to France to convince its monarchy to help a burgeoning republic survive some serious birth pangs.

On Wednesday, Apple TV+ revealed the trailer for “Franklin,” a limited series starring Oscar and Emmy winner Michael Douglas as Benjamin Franklin. The historical drama premieres on April 12.
The series is set at a pivotal moment in the founding father’s life. He’s in France in 1776, trying to secure the court of Louis XVI’s support for the revolution. There are untrustworthy people all around him, so it’s a dangerous diplomatic chess game he has to play. The series, which is based on historical biographer Stacy Schiff’s book “A Great Improvisation: Franklin, France, and the Birth of America,” presents Franklin’s story as a kind of political thriller.
In addition to Douglas, who also executive produces, the cast includes Noah Jupe (“A Quiet Place”) as Temple Franklin, Benjamin’s teenage grandson who served as his secretary during the diplomatic mission; Thibault de Montalembert (“Call My Agent!”) as...

Michael Douglas Is Definitely ‘Up to Something’ as Benjamin Franklin in Apple TV+ ‘Franklin’ Trailer
Turns out, Benjamin Franklin didn’t just sit around perfecting bifocals.
Apple TV+ today released the trailer for its eight-part limited series “Franklin,” starring and executive produced by Michael Douglas. The first three episodes will premiere globally on the Apple SVOD service on Friday, April 12; the next five episodes will role out one at a time on subsequent Fridays through May 17.
“Franklin” is based on Stacy Schiff’s book “A Great Improvisation: Franklin, France, and the Birth of America.” The series tells “the thrilling story of the greatest gamble of Benjamin Franklin’s career” — outside of holding a lightning rod in a thunderstorm, we imagine.
In 1776, the world-famous inventor faces his ultimate test: a secret mission to recruit France to help America fight for its independence in the Revolutionary War. And, oh yeah, he was 70 and Transatlantic travel hadn’t exactly been perfected.

In 1989, the 7-year-old Daveed Diggs queued up outside Oakland’s Grand Lake Theatre, his hometown multiplex, to see “The Little Mermaid” with his father, Dountes.
“It must’ve been opening weekend. The line wrapped around the block,” Diggs recalls. “I remember loving Scuttle, thinking he was just the funniest thing I’d seen up to that point, and loving the songs.”
Thirty years later, Diggs is a Tony- and Grammy-winning actor, rapper and filmmaker, best known for “Blindspotting” (both the 2018 film and the Starz series) and “Hamilton,” where he delighted Broadway audiences by putting his unique imprint on Thomas Jefferson and the Marquis de Lafayette. After playing those historical figures night after night, one might imagine he’d have no qualms about taking on another well-known character — the calypso-singing crab Sebastian in Disney’s live-action “The Little Mermaid,” which opens on May 26.

Twenty years after the fan-favorite Disney Renaissance film debuted in 1997, legendary composer Alan Menken revealed that he was working on a stage adaptation of "Hercules," the tale of a young man on his road to becoming a hero and finding out where he belongs in the world. After many years of hearing the "Hamilton" ensemble sing "I am not throwing away my shot," Leslie Odom Jr. clearly took that mantra to heart. Since winning acclaim (and a Tony) for his role as Aaron Burr, the triple-threat performer has not slowed down. For 2020's "One Night In Miami," he earned two Oscar nods and has since starred in films like the "Sopranos" prequel "The Many Saints of Newark" and Rian Johnson's "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery." But how exactly did Odom Jr. come to fill the role that would put him front and center on a Broadway stage?
The Origins Of Broadway's Aaron Burr

David Prior's 2020 film "The Empty Man" opens with a prologue that could easily stand alone as one of the most chilling short films ever made. It's 1995, and two couples -- Paul (Aaron Poole) and Ruthie (Virginia Kull), Fiona (Jessica Matten) and Greg (Evan Jonigkeit) -- are hiking through the Ura Valley in Bhutan. After crossing an old, swaying suspension bridge across a yawning chasm, Paul hears a soft sound like someone blowing into an empty bottle. Curious, he wanders off across the mountaintop in search of the source of this sound. As the others watch, he slips through an unseen hole in the rocks and disappears, as though he was never there at all.
It's another twenty minutes before the title card of the movie appears, stylized as "The Em ty Man." By this point, all of the hikers are dead except for Paul, who is trapped in a different kind of hell.

The Hamilton cast dominates this year’s Emmy race for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie… but could another actor sneak in to steal the spotlight?
Three of this year’s six nominees come from Disney+’s filmed version of the hit musical — and all six nominees are enjoying their first career Emmy nomination, in fact. On the Hamilton side of things, Daveed Diggs is up for playing both the Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson, along with Anthony Ramos as both John Laurens and Alexander Hamilton’s son Philip, and Jonathan Groff as the memorably pompous King George.

This story draws on an interview done with Daveed Diggs for the Down to the Wire issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Daveed Diggs first heard about “Hamilton” long before it became the talk of Broadway. A veteran of experimental theater in the Bay Area of Northern California, he heard from his friend, director Thomas Kail, of a hip-hop musical about America’s founding fathers that another friend, Lin-Manuel Miranda, was putting together.
He was not impressed.
“It’s a terrible pitch,” said Diggs, one of seven actors who have now been nominated for Emmys for Kail’s filmed version of the play on Disney+. “It’s still a terrible pitch. A hip-hop musical about Alexander Hamilton is a bad idea, except that it turned out to be a great idea.
“If it hadn’t existed and you pitched that to me today, I would definitely pass on it, had they not been my friends,...

A version of this story about the Emmy-nominated actors from “Hamilton” first appeared in the Down to the Wire issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Before Emmy voting began this year, there were real questions about whether the actors from the Disney+ film of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “Hamilton” were even eligible for Emmys in the acting categories. The film itself was classified as a pre-recorded variety special, not a television movie, and the Emmy rulebook seemed to indicate that its performers wouldn’t qualify for categories designed to salute actors from limited series and TV movies.
But the Television Academy insisted that they were in fact eligible, and 10 different Hamilton performers appeared on the ballots. Seven of the 10 were nominated, the same number as were nominated for Tony Awards for the show’s original Broadway production.

“I didn’t have any TV or film experience really by the time we shot this,” Hamilton star and Emmy nominee Daveed Diggs said of the Disney+ filmed version of the Tony-, Grammy- and Pulitzer-winning musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda. “Tommy told me, do your show and we’ll catch the show,” the Snowpiercer star added of veteran director Thomas Kail’s calming instruction back in 2016.

“What is a legacy?” ponders Alexander Hamilton (Lin-Manuel Miranda) toward the conclusion of “Hamilton,” Miranda’s blockbuster musical. “It’s planting seeds in a garden you never get to see.”
But a funny thing happened to the cast and crew of Miranda’s Tony Award-winning musical: a filmed version of the stage production with the original cast has allowed its participants to actively watch the garden grow. Released on Disney Plus last year, “Hamilton” the movie has followed right in the footsteps of its acclaimed original production, earning awards accolades and stoking cultural conversations years after the cast took their final bows.

This story about Daveed Diggs first appeared in the Limited Series & TV Movie issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.

Unlike the Emmys, the SAG Awards do not distinguish between lead and supporting roles. That is how featured players Bill Camp (“The Queen’s Gambit”) and Daveed Diggs (“Hamilton”) are in contention for Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor against stars Hugh Grant (“The Undoing”), Ethan Hawke (“The Good Lord Bird”), and Mark Ruffalo (“I Know This Much Is True”).
Diggs and Ruffalo each played two parts in their respective projects. Our odds have Ruffalo (82/25) winning this award, followed in order by Grant (39/10), Hawke (4/1), Diggs (9/2), and Camp (9/2). Ruffalo took home this award for “The Normal Heart” in 2015.
Grant’s role in “A Very English Scandal” earned him a bid two years ago. He, along with Ruffalo and Hawke, was previously nominated on the feature film side in both the Best Supporting Actor and Best Ensemble categories. Hawke and Ruffalo competed in 2015, but both lost to J. K. Simmons (“Whiplash”).

You could say that Hugh Grant has been taken for granted. In his 39-year film and television career, he has collected only one major industry peer group award: a BAFTA for his starring role in the 1994 British rom-com “Four Weddings and a Funeral” (which also won him his only Golden Globe). Now the actor is looking to grab his first Screen Actors Guild Awards statuette for his dramatic turn as the multi-sided Jonathan Fraser in the HBO miniseries “The Undoing,” which earned him a limited series/TV movie actor bid, bringing his career haul to four citations.

Since the first Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony in 1995, only four performers have nabbed trophies for roles that had previously earned them Tony wins. Brian Dennehy (“Death of a Salesman”) became the first in 2001, and then the other three all pulled off the same feat in 2017: Bryan Cranston (“All the Way”), Viola Davis (“Fences”), and Denzel Washington (“Fences”). This year Daveed Diggs is looking to join them by collecting a SAG Award for his Tony-winning role in “Hamilton.” If he succeeds, he will be the first to be so honored for a musical performance.

Daveed Diggs has been living with “Hamilton” since its first workshop in 2013. He won a Tony Award for his dual performance as Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson in 2016. And now in 2021, he finds himself up for a SAG Award for Disney Plus’ filmed version of the show. It’s a bit surreal for the actor, considering he hasn’t played the role in almost five years.

As usual, the SAG Awards manages to pick up what the Golden Globe nominations left off. In particular, the biggest mistake the mostly solid Globes nods made this year, in missing the boat on Michaela Coel’s stunning, heartbreaking HBO series “I May Destroy You.”

Emmy Raver-Lampman has gained a large fanbase for her role as Allison Hargreeves on The Umbrella Academy, but before joining the Netflix series, she was in Broadway's Hamilton. In fact, the award-winning musical is actually where she met her current boyfriend, Daveed Diggs. While Daveed originated the roles of Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson in 2015, Emmy was one of the the ensemble members in the original cast. Though the two hung out a few times (as evidenced by their Instagram photos), they didn't actually start dating until 2019. Since then, they have only made a handful of public appearances together, but they often gush about each other's professional achievements on social media. Ahead, see some of their cutest moments together over the years.

But never being satisfied with only having the streaming event of the summer, Disney has now also revealed there will be a new behind-the-scenes look at the musical with Lin-Manuel Miranda and other key members of the cast, plus a historian, discussing the musical’s legacy five years on.

He’s one of the most endearing characters in Hamilton. Introduced as bashful and vaguely awkward due to his struggle with the English language, the only major character in the musical with aristocratic titles—besides the King of England, of course—is strangely modest when standing next to the likes of Alexander Hamilton or Aaron Burr. But the Marquis de Lafayette doesn’t stay that way. Soon enough good-natured modesty gives way to spitting English rhymes faster than anyone else on stage. Actor Daveed Diggs may have even secured his Tony award before playing Thomas Jefferson with Lafayette’s rapid fire verbal assault in “Guns and Ships.”
Yet the thing about the same actor portraying Jefferson is it means we see nothing of Lafayette after the American Revolution is won in Act One. In “Yorktown (The World Turned Upside Down),” Lafayette promises he’ll go back to France and “bring...

The Hamilton film, which hits Disney+ on July 3, isn't just a throwback to a reimagined version of the American Revolution: it's a throwback to the early days of the smash-hit musical. Although the movie is just being released now, it actually was filmed a few years back, fresh off the heels of its near-sweep at the Tony Awards.
According to a Deadline report at the time of the film's announcement, the Hamilton movie was filmed in 2016, over the course of three performances in the weeks before some of the original cast members departed the company. Playbill reported that the show was filmed live on June 26 and June 28 of that year; additionally, some segments were filmed again without an audience. This was done in order to allow cameras to capture different angles that wouldn't be possible to get without interfering significantly with a live performance.

Wait For It. More than just one of the best songs in Hamilton—that Aaron Burr has soul!—those words signify how long fans around the world have waited to see Hamilton performed. Not everyone could afford a ticket at the height of the musical’s popularity or lived near a city where the touring show has visited. Yet now, in times when the lights across Broadway are out, we all can be in the room where it happens.
Thanks to Disney+, and the $75 million the Walt Disney Company shelled out for the rights, a filmed performance with the original Broadway cast of Hamilton is here. For the diehards who’ve listened to the original Broadway cast recording hundreds of times, it’s like seeing old friends when Anthony Ramos as John Laurens, Daveed Diggs as Marquis de Lafayette, and Okieriete Onaodowan as Hercules Mulligan walk into a bar. But...

Lots of people have been waiting for years to see the film made from Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony- and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical “Hamilton.” It’s been almost five years, after all, since the musical premiered on Broadway in the summer of 2015, and four years since the original cast filmed a string of shows at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in June of 2016 — years in which devotees of the smash hit eagerly anticipated how it would translate to film or television screens.
I was not one of those people, because I never saw “Hamilton.” Oh, I entered the lottery for tickets on the occasions when I was in New York City, and also tried when the touring company came to Los Angeles. But I never got lucky — and since a friend of mine once told me that you shouldn’t listen to the original cast album until you’d seen the show,...

Yes, you can finally watch Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “Hamilton” at home. And yes, it’s just as ingenious, energizing and brilliant as you’ve been hearing for the last several years — inspiring everyone from musicians to theater artists to former Trump official John Bolton. But the filmed version of the 2015 Broadway megahit, shot with the original cast in 2016 and premiering this week on Disney+, is a very particular work.
For one thing, it’s less a musical film than a recorded stage performance, like those concert films you see on HBO. Shot at Broadway’s Richard Rodgers Theatre in 2016, this “Hamilton” does not attempt to escape or transcend its stage roots — even in the ways that recent live TV musical productions like “Grease Live!” and “The Sound of Music” have by moving within various sets on a vast soundstage or studio lot.

In the quarter-millennium since “ten-dollar founding father” Alexander Hamilton took a bullet for his beliefs — if a senseless death by duel can reasonably be described in such idealistic terms — America has fought pandemics and wars, prejudice and inequality, inching slowly toward a more perfect union. The year 2020 finds our country embattled once again, and while so much of the popular arts have been put on hold by a crippling coronavirus outbreak, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s electrifying Broadway musical, “Hamilton,” finds its way into American homes just in time for Independence Day weekend — more than a year ahead of its intended big-screen release.
Consider this a gift from Miranda — a populist poet laureate for the Obama generation — and distributor Walt Disney Studios, who opted to release “Hamilton” via streaming to all those stuck at home. Overseen by Thomas Kail, who also directed the show on Broadway, this direct stage-to-screen version of “Hamilton...
