For East New York fans, CBS' finalization of its 2023-2024 schedule came with devastating news.
Since the network announced that the freshman cop drama was canceled, fan groups have organized petition signing and social media campaigns to save their beloved show.
It's a long shot, but let's hope it works. There are a ton of reasons East New York has a dedicated fan base; this show deserves an 11th-hour reprieve.
While there are many cop shows on the air, none was quite like this one.
Rather than focusing on the parts of the Big Apple that tourists usually frequent, this series took place in a lower-income, majority Black and Brown neighborhood.

Despite a sizable outcry from devoted fans, East New York ended its one-season run on CBS Sunday.
The Warner Bros. TV series from creators William Finkelstein and Mike Flynn wrapped with a sentimental gathering of its leads having one last drink together — Deputy Inspector Regina Haywood (the terrific Amanda Warren), Assistant Chief John Suarez (Jimmy Smits), Det. Crystal Morales (Elizabeth Rodriguez), Det. Tommy Killian (Kevin Rankin), Officer Brandy Quinlan (breakout Olivia Luccardi), Officer Marvin Sandeford (Ruben Santiago-Hudson), Officer Andre Bentley (Lavel Schley) and Capt. Stan Yenko (Richard Kind).
Yenko gave a toast to Haywood, who thanked her for bringing him back onto the force where he “came to love it all over again.” His words brought Haywood to tears.
The episode wrapped up a double homicide from the previous episode in Ruskin Gardens, where Quinlan had been living as part of Haywood’s unique initiative to have officers live in crime-ridden areas.

East New York was cancelled by CBS earlier this week, but there is still some hope that the series could be saved and renewed for a second season. The show's studio, Warner Bros Television, had started to informally shop the series to other outlets in recent weeks when renewal talks with CBS weren't going as well as hoped.
Starring Amanda Warren, Jimmy Smits, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Kevin Rankin, Richard Kind, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Olivia Luccardi, and Lavel Schley, East New York revolves around the officers and detectives of the 74th precinct in the East New York neighborhood of Brooklyn.

It was good news-bad news day for CBS drama viewers yesterday. Fans of S.W.A.T. rejoiced when the network reversed its cancellation decision and renewed the veteran procedural for a 13-episode seventh and final season. But that tipped the scale for another CBS cop drama, freshman East New York, which was canceled shortly after. And in a case of bad timing, by being axed during a writers strike, East New York is far less likely to get a reprieve.
While not as established as S.W.A.T., East New York, starring Amanda Warren, has developed a loyal following, and its cancellation has sparked a backlash, especially in light of the fact that the cop show drew bigger linear numbers than two other CBS drama series that have been renewed for next season, fellow freshman So Help Me Todd and CSI: Vegas, both of which come from CBS’ sister studios CBS Studios.

Not all the news coming out of CBS today is good news: After reversing its decision to cancel S.W.A.T., the Eye network has cancelled freshman dramas East New York and True Lies, TVLine has learned.
East New York starred Amanda Warren as Deputy Inspector Regina Haywood, who ran a police station in a working-class Brooklyn neighborhood. The newly promoted Haywood faced resistance from veteran officers and detectives who didn’t like the changes she was trying to make. Jimmy Smits co-starred as Haywood’s mentor John Suarez. Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Kevin Rankin, Richard Kind, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Lavel Schley and Olivia Luccardi led the supporting cast.

CBS has canceled both the police procedural “East New York” and “True Lies” after just one season.
According to sources, the decision to cancel the series came down to CBS haggling with the series’ studio Warner Bros. Television over the show’s budget, which included CBS asking that the cast of the show not get the customary pay increases going into the second season. It has previously been reported that CBS has renewed other shows on its lineup, like the comedy “Bob Hearts Abishola,” after asking the cast to take pay cuts or by shifting series regulars to recurring status.

CBS has canceled cop drama East New York, starring Amanda Warren, after one season.
The decision comes after CBS today reversed its Friday decision to cancel S.W.A.T., renewing the veteran drama for a 13-episode seventh and final season.
It also follows lengthy renewal negotiations between the network and East New York‘s lead studio, Warner Bros. Television. In addition to the inevitable squabbles over budget, there was an additional business issue that complicated talks. As Deadline reported, it had to do with additional streaming rights CBS had requested that go beyond the now-standard stacking, which allows networks to stream current season of their series on their digital platforms.

However, progress had been made and East New York‘s renewal prospects went up Friday when CBS, somewhat surprisingly, canceled long-running drama S.W.A.T. However, following backlash from fans, S.W.A.T. was uncanceled.

We’re finally going to get to meet a character we’ve only thus far heard about on East New York, and based on TV Insider’s exclusive sneak peek of the March 12 episode, we’re going to enjoy seeing more of her. Debi Mazar joins the cast in a recurring role as Officer Brandy Quinlan’s (Olivia Luccardi) mother, Ann-Marie. (She’ll appear in at least three episodes before the end of the season.) Quinlan has mentioned her mom, a recovering addict, in the past, and just in our clip alone, we get a sense of just how tense things are between the two women. When Quinlan checks that her mom’s still living in Boston, Ann-Marie realizes she never updated her daughter on her address. And after Officer Andre Bentley (Lavel Schley) walks in and the two meet, he leaves; Ann-Marie remarks, “he’s handsome.” But Quinlan turns...

CBS is changing focus.
After brutally slaying a good portion of their comedy lineup and Magnum Pi, the network announced three drama pickups.
They've picked up none of the comedies they had under consideration.
The best news of the day by a long margin is that CBS formally picked up Fire Country (formerly known as Cal Fire) from CBS Studios.
This series has been exciting our readers since it was first announced, and we couldn't agree more. This one comes from Seal Team's Max Thieriot, who co-wrote the story and serves as an executive producer.
It's co-written by executive producers Tony Phelan & Joan Rater. Other EPs include James Strong (pilot only), David Grae, Jerry Bruckheimer, Jonathan Littman, and KristieAnne Reed (Jerry Bruckheimer Television)
The official logline is: Seeking redemption and a shortened prison sentence, young convict Bode Donovan joins a firefighting program that returns him to his small Northern California hometown,...

CBS has ordered three new drama shows for the 2022-2023 broadcast season. According to sources, the network has decided not to move forward with any of its four comedy pilots.
The network has picked up the police drama “East New York,” the firefighter drama “Fire Country” (formerly known as “Cal Fire”), and legal drama “So Help Me Todd.” The comedies “Rust Belt News,” “Unplanned in Akron,” “Sober Companion,” and “The Hug Machine” have been passed over.
“East New York” follows Regina Haywood (Amanda Warren), the newly promoted deputy inspector of East New York, a working-class neighborhood at the edge of Brooklyn. She leads a diverse group of officers and detectives, some of whom are reluctant to deploy her creative methods of serving and protecting in the midst of social upheaval and the early seeds of gentrification.

CBS has given series orders to three of its five drama pilots, Max Thieriot’s Fire Country (fka Cal Fire); East New York, headlined by Amanda Warren and Jimmy Smits; and So Help Me Todd (fka Untitled Mother & Son Legal Drama), starring Marcia Gay Harden and Skylar Astin. CBS is not commenting beyond that, but I hear all three series are for fall.
True Lies, ordered as an off-cycle pilot, also had been rumored for a series order, likely for midseason. I hear negotiations between CBS and 20th Television continue, and the project is still very much alive.
Not going forward are CBS’ remaining drama pilot, Early Edition, a reimagining of the Kyle Chandler series which had been cooling off, as well as all of CBS’ comedy pilots/presentations. The network this year opted for all presentation orders to comedy projects to its own studio, CBS Studios, while the one comedy from an outside studio, Warner Bros. TV’s Rust Bell News, was a full pilot.
New Series On Broadcast Networks In 2022-23: Photo Gallery
I hear CBS brass were very happy with their crop of drama pilots this season, considered to be one of the strongest in years, while the group of comedy pilots did not produce any standouts.
With CBS also canceling three current comedy series — United States of Al, B Positive and How We Roll — the network will have the fewest half-hour series on the schedule in awhile. CBS five years ago trimmed down its two-hour Monday comedy block to one hour, more recently consisting of The Neighborhood and Bob Hearts Abishola. CBS may now do the same with the Thursday two-hour block.
I hear So Help Me Todd, which has comedic overtones, may join the lineup behind the 8 Pm comedy block, anchored by flagship Young Sheldon and possibly featuring breakout hit Ghosts.
2022 CBS Pilots & Series Orders
So Help Me Todd has been one of the Cinderella stories of the 2022 broadcast season. Taking a big blow early on when the female lead was recast, with Marcia Gay Harden replacing Geena Davis opposite Skylar Astin, the pilot hung in there in the middle of the pack and had a big finish with strong testing results, I hear.
Here are details about CBS’ newly picked up scripted series:

Exclusive: Kevin Rankin (Claws) and Elizabeth Rodriguez (Orange is the New Black) are set as leads opposite Amanda Warren and Jimmy Smits in the CBS police drama pilot East New York.
Co-written by William Finkelstein and Mike Flynn and directed by Mike Robin, the project centers on Regina Haywood (Warren), the newly promoted deputy inspector of East New York, an impoverished, working-class neighborhood at the eastern edge of Brooklyn. She leads a diverse group of officers and detectives, some of whom are reluctant to deploy her creative methods of serving and protecting during the midst of social upheaval and the early seeds of gentrification.
Rankin will play Tommy Killian, a charming and confident detective – but his thoughts on gender relations are in need of updating.
Rodriguez will portray Crystal Morales, an intuitive detective who is not easily intimidated. She closely guards her private life, making her an object of endless speculation.
