Recently, “Mai” became the highest grossing film of all time in Vietnam, cementing Tran Thanh's status as the king of the local box office, since the top three entries now belong to him. The success of the movie, however, did not occur only within the country's borders. 3388 Films released the movie in nearly 200 theaters in nine countries throughout North America and Europe – marking the widest same-day theatrical release ever for a Vietnam film across the two continents. “Mai” is now playing in the U.S., Canada, UK (England and Scotland), France, Germany, Norway, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland.
The titular character is a woman in trouble, although not exactly to her own accord. As the story begins, she is just moving to a cheap apartment in a block and her beauty immediately causes problems for her. The other women feel jealous of her, particularly since their husbands cannot hide their awe,...

Glorious Ashes is screening at Five Flavours
The story focuses on life in the areas around Mekong while revolving around three women living in the same small village. Hau is married to Duong, a fisherman in the delta, but their relationship is anything but ideal, since the latter is missing quite often, and even when he returns, he hardly has anything to say to his wife. The reason is widely known in the village, as Duong never hid his feelings towards Nhan, a childhood friend who lives close by and is happily married to Tam, a ceramics worker for the local cottage industry. Three women living in a small village on the Mekong Delta struggle to contend with the men they’re bound up with in Glorious Ashes, a thoughtful if somewhat heavy-handed ensemble piece from Vietnamese writer-director Bui Thac Chuyen (Adrift).
Premiering in competition at Tokyo, the film provides an intriguing look at a part of the world where the old ways, whether in farming, fishing or wives being completely subjected to their husbands’ every last whim, still dominate daily life. But the two-hour drama never quite rises above its earnest and weighty message, which makes it more of a thoughtful pedagogical item than a movie with serious market potential.
This is not to say that Glorious Ashes isn’t, at least in its conception, a probing and rather dark depiction of the quotidian struggles faced by its trio of heroines, all of whom have...

"If you witnessed it, why didn't you report it?" Cj Entertainment has debuted a full-length official trailer for a Vietnamese crime thriller titled Invisible Evidence in English. The film is opening in Vietnam next month, but doesn't have any other worldwide release dates yet. "Right in the alley she seemed familiar with, right after her mother's call. What is the truth behind this disappearance?" The plot involves a blind woman reporting an incident with a taxi driver that she believes was a murder. But another person comes forward and reports something entirely different. Both are being watched secretly by the assassin, so he can kill the witness. Will she figure out what's going on and stop him before it's too late? The film stars Phuong Anh Dao, Quang Tuan, Otis, Thuân Phát, Ai Phuong, and Anh Tu. This looks extremely intense, with all kinds of scenes in the night and the rain.
