Earlier this year, a debate briefly flared on social media: where have the superstars gone? What happened to the days when Kendrick Lamar and Drake battled for global supremacy, Kanye West elicited praise from the likes of David Lynch, the Future Hive controlled rap Twitter, Lil Wayne was the best rapper alive, and Nicki Minaj commanded the Hot 100? With those “stadium status” acts largely past their imperial phases – perhaps the jury is out on Pulitzer Kenny, who has yet to issue a follow up to his 2017 album Damn – the genre seems irrevocably atomized.

What a difference two years make. On 2019’s Mirrorland, Earthgang conjured a stew of Black music idioms – trap, sampled soul, Southern blues, percussive polyrhythms – with audible joy. Breaking into Billboard’s top 40 albums chart, the album established Olu (a.k.a. Johnny Venus) and WowGr8 (a.k.a. Doctur Dot) as one of the more imaginative hip-hop acts to emerge in recent years, albeit one bedeviled by comparisons to Atl’s greatest duo, Outkast. Yes, Olu harmonizes with a yelp reminiscent of Andre 3000 at his most animated. But Earthgang is...

The two Atlanta rappers in Earthgang know their music has a tendency to cover a lot of ground. The duo, comprised of Olu (a.k.a. Johnny Venus) and WowGr8 (born Eian Parker), have spent the past few years reinventing Southern rap at a pace as dizzying as it’s been dazzling. For their second major-label album, Ghetto Gods, they decided to give listeners a road map. It started with shooting a sequence of five music videos to get across the sounds and themes on the project. “We’re so creative,...

Megan Thee Stallion and VickeeLo have joined forces for “Ride or Die,” a fast-talking song off the upcoming collection Queen & Slim: The Soundtrack. The soundtrack, which drops November 15th, is currently available for preorder.

Having the No. 1 project in the country is old hat for J. Cole, but the instant success of Dreamville’s highly-anticipated “Revenge of the Dreamers III” collection, which features collaborations with more than 25 artists, writers and producers, took many by surprise.
The first installment of the series arrived in 2014, followed by “Revenge of the Dreamers II” one year later. Both had buzz, but didn’t set the charts on fire like “ROTD3,” the result of a by-invitation-only 10-day studio session held at Tree Sounds Studios in Norcross, Georgia.
Three days before “ROTD3” dropped, Dreamville released the official documentary for the album. Directed by David Peters and produced by Scott Lazer, over 100 hours of footage were edited down into 30 minutes. Currently, the film boasts over 2.3 million views on YouTube.
In the documentary, Cole talks of trying to reach outside of what he came to believe was too insular an inner circle — saying,...
