Exclusive: Ava DuVernay had a lot to say in the Emmy-winning When They See Us about the harmed heaped on the so-called Central Park 5 and now she is speaking out about the settlement she and Netflix reached with the former prosecutor in that travesty of justice.
“After years of legal wrangling and millions of dollars spent, she walked away with no payment to her or her lawyers of any kind, rather than face cross examination before a New York jury as to her conduct and character,” the Array founder told Deadline today of the end of the four-year defamation suit that was set for trial to start on June 10. “I believe that Linda Fairstein was responsible for the investigation and prosecution of the Central Park Jogger case that resulted in the wrongful conviction of five innocent Black and Brown boys,” she bluntly said.
She added: “In the days leading up to her defamation trial,...

Linda Fairstein, the controversial former prosecutor involved in the Central Park Five case, has settled her defamation lawsuit against Netflix and Ava DuVernay over the 2019 docuseries “When They See Us.”
Fairstein sued in 2020, alleging that she was falsely portrayed as a racist villain who orchestrated the convictions of five innocent young men. The case was set to go to trial next week in federal court in Manhattan.
In the settlement, Netflix agreed to donate $1 million to the Innocence Project. Fairstein will not receive money.
Netflix also agreed to add this disclaimer to the front of the show: “While the motion picture is inspired by actual events and persons, certain characters, incidents, locations, dialogue, and names are fictionalized for the purposes of dramatization.”
Fairstein said in a statement that the litigation has revealed the truth about the case. She cited a judge’s ruling last fall denying Netflix’s motion for summary judgment,...

(Updated with Linda Fairstein statement) Just days before Netflix and the former prosecutor of the unjustly imprisoned Central Park 5 were set to go to trial in New York over Ava DuVernay’s Emmy-winning When They See Us, the whole four-year long legal battle is over.
“The parties announce that they have resolved this lawsuit,” said the streamer, DuVernay, writer Attica Locke and ex-Assistant District Attorney Linda Fairstein in a joint statement today. Documents are being filed right now in court to end the matter. “Netflix will donate $1 million to the Innocence Project. Ms. Fairstein will not receive any money as part of this settlement.”
The trial was scheduled to start on June 10
Along with no compensation, Fairstein leaves the matter without the usual confidentially agreement and without any admission of fault on the defendants’ part, I hear. In a move that borders on ironic were it not so consequential, Netflix...

In their conversation, Mo shares that they were in love with Xunami Muse this season and expected her to make the final four. Annette Bening had a defiant message for foes of LGBTQ rights and equality in the United States, specifically political leaders who are targeting the trans community. “You do not want to make this momma mad,” said the four-time Oscar nominee as she received Advocate Award on Oct. 28 from Glsen’s Rise Up LA benefit, which raised funds for the group’s programs supporting queer grade-school students across the country.
Bening — who is the mother of a trans son, writer Stephen Ira, as well as three other children — spoke at the event about why she has become increasingly vocal in advocating for the trans community in recent years.
“Most of my career, I’ve been a pretty private person … but over the last several years, I’ve changed my mind,” said Bening, explaining, “I have felt the responsibility to speak out and to speak up as transphobia has invaded our government at the local,...

From "I Want It That Way" to "I'll Never Break Your Heart," the Backstreet Boys are known for their hit love songs, but what do their personal love lives look like? Over the years, all five members of the group - Aj McLean, Howie Dorough, Nick Carter, Kevin Richardson, and Brian Littrell - have gotten married and started families of their own.
Most of the band members actually have really sweet stories of how they met their wives. One of them actually met their significant other on the set of a Backstreet Boys music video, while another met his wife before Backstreet Boys fame when he was still working at Disney World. And apparently, tours are now often family affairs.

The world-renowned adage states that expectation usually leads to disappointment. After years of waiting for all-winners iterations of Drag Race, the anticipation was at an all-time high when it was finally announced. Not only were the fans treated to a version of the show they have spent ages waiting for but also have been graced with some of the greatest episodes in Drag Race her-story proving the aforementioned catchphrase very wrong! I have been racking my brain trying to figure out what has the secret ingredient that has made this season so fantastic and have decided that it is a concoction of various factors. These are some of the most successful queens to come from Drag Race and their winning performances on their original seasons already showcased an extremely high level of drag but also the time spent touring afterwards can only develop their art. Additionally, the change of format...

For the debut season of “RuPaul’s Drag Race UK vs. The World,” RuPaul Charles brought together nine all-stars from the series’ many franchises to compete against each other in the ultimate contest to find the “queen of the mother-tucking world.” Hosted in the United Kingdom, the new series set three queens from the UK franchise as hosts to six other competitors. The final four queens that competed in the “Grand Finale” were Jujubee and Mo Heart from the US and Blu Hydrangea and Baga Chipz from the UK.

I cannot remember an episode that has been as shocking as last week’s episode of Ru Paul’s Drag Race UK vs The World was! The episode started with the return of probably one of the most iconic drag race maxi challenges that has appeared in every season of the show ever since Ru Paul’s Drag Race season two all those years ago! For the “Snatch Game” the queens have to busy out their best celebrity impressions while also showcasing their improvised comedy skills and for the first time ever the challenge had a family fortunes inspired twist. The clear standouts in the challenge were Baga Chips, as the unhinged Kathy Bates in Misery (I recently saw a video on YouTube that analysed the reference points Baga played on which made me appreciate this performance even more!) and Blu Hydrangea doing two performances as Austin Powers and Dr Evil,...

On paper, last week’s episode of Ru Paul’s Drag Race UK vs The World seemed like it should be made perfectly for me! Drag performers taking on a lip-sync performance inspired by an iconic musical theatre star which included parodies of Liza Minnelli in Cabaret and Tim Curry in The Rocky Horror Picture Show (which is one of my all-time favourite films) should be something that I would want to be a part of and at the bare minimum really enjoy but I have to say I thought that, compared to previous Ru-sical challenges, this one fell flat! When you think that the halftime show challenge from All-Stars 6 (which also had the queens impersonating iconic performers) had the highest production value, fantastic costumes and back-up dancers whereas the UK versus the world version just about had props, it does mean the overall package does pale in comparison! It...

For the debut season of “RuPaul’s Drag Race UK vs. The World,” RuPaul Charles brought together nine all-stars from the series’ many franchises to compete against each other in the ultimate contest to find the “queen of the mother-tucking world.” Hosted in the United Kingdom, the new series sets three queens from the UK franchise as hosts to six other competitors. In episode 1 and episode 2, Canada’s Lemon and UK’s Cheryl Hole became the first international all stars to “sashay away,” while Jimbo plummeted from two top placements to the bottom as the third queen eliminated.

We are only on episode three of Ru Paul’s Drag Race UK vs The World and already we have had some very controversial eliminations. The first to go in this season was the icon that is Lemon whose act in the talent show, while we have seen similar acts before, showcase incredible dancing abilities and wonderful leaping splits off of a set of stairs. Next Cheryl Hole was told to sashay away after a design challenge where she was clearly not the worst in the lineup. However, recently Cheryl was doing a gig in G-a-y London where she was joined on stage by none other than Adele (who hilariously pole danced for the audience) who then sang the praises of Cheryl and talked about how she shouldn’t have gone home this early in the competition so I suppose every cloud has a silver lining! If you haven’t...

I am beginning to get very frustrated by the talent shows that occur throughout the Drag Race franchise. What started out as a novel idea for the All-Star seasons has now become a staple during every series with the range of talents being shown becoming narrower and narrower with every show! While I totally understand the hard work and dedication it takes to deliver an effective lip-sync, I am tired of queens using this as their talent show act without providing anything unique that the audience hasn’t seen before. If lip-syncing is your only talent then really you should craft a performance that perfectly captures the essence of who you are with some sort of exciting twist that we have not seen before.
One queen that really cashed in on the element of surprise was none other than Drag Race Canada’s Jimbo! I am still at a loss...

On the February 1 premiere of “RuPaul’s Drag Race UK vs. After a talent showcase, Lemon (5th place on “Canada’s Drag Race” season 1) and Janey Jacké (2nd placeon “Drag Race Holland” season 1) fell to the bottom. In traditional All Stars rules, the top two lipsynced for the right to send one of the bottom two home. In that lipsync, host of “Drag Race Thailand” Pangina Heals defeated “Canada’s Drag Race” season 1 fourth-placer Jimbo and sent her sister Lemon packing.

Drag Race fans, we need to talk about Jujubee.
This iconic queen has been in the game longer than any of her international challengers, having previously participated in three full seasons of competition. From memorable acting performances to gag-worthy runway looks and beyond, Jujubee has proven herself a force to be reckoned with time and again. So here’s my question, which I ask with respect: Why isn’t she bringing even a flicker of that competitive flame to RuPaul’s Drag Race UK vs. the World?

Just when you thought Willow Pill’s Enya-themed bubble bath was the weirdest thing Drag Race would give us in 2022, along came Tuesday’s premiere of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK Vs. the World to make us hold its beer while it pelted us with deli meat. (But more on that later.)
