“American Idol” kicked off Hollywood Week on Sunday, March 24 with the first of two episodes dedicated to this phase of the competition. By the end of the episode on Monday (March 25), we will have seen the 150 hopefuls who got tickets to Hollywood get cut down to just 40 contenders who remain in the running to win season 17. These two Hollywood Week episodes were filmed months ago and we’ve been doing some digging about the results. Spoilers ahead
We know that the contestants faced the three judges — pop princess Katy Perry, country superstar Luke Bryan and Oscar-winning singer/songwriter Lionel Richie — in three separate rounds: lines of 10, groups, and solos. At the end of these, they got the news as to whether they had made the Top 40, who were sent to the Aulani Resort in Hawaii to sing again for the trio of experts at the end of January. The episode...

Turns out Season 16 returnees Kay Kay, Tippy Balady, Isaac Streetman and Payton Taylor aren’t the only familiar faces from last season going to Hollywood. The fourth Season 17 tryout round on Sunday marked the return of “the Sauce.” Or rather judge Katy Perry’s sauce. Florida teen Alyssa Raghu (short for Raghunandan) sneaked into the room as Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan attempted to block Perry’s view from seeing one of her faves from last season’s show who got into the top 24.
Unlike the foursome mentioned, we got to hear Raghu belt out a full -throated rendition of Vv Brown‘s “Shark in the Water” while she played a guitar. It only took Perry a few seconds to know that “my sauce” was back and — the good news — better than ever. Last time around, she sang Ariana Grande‘s “Almost Is Never Enough” and Perry enthusiastically predicted she...

“American Idol” returns for its second season on ABC beginning March 3. This edition, which is the 17th overall, follows the same basic format as the 15 seasons that ruled the ratings on Fox. Ryan Seacrest is back as host and the three judges remain pop princess Katy Perry, country superstar Luke Bryan and Oscar-winning singer/songwriter Lionel Richie.
Over the course of the five pre-taped audition episodes that air over the next three weeks, we’ll see upwards of 150 contestants get tickets to Hollywood. These hopefuls were then winnowed down to just 40 in three rounds as they sung in lines of 10, groups, and solos. The Hollywood Week episodes, which were filmed months ago, will air on March 24 and 25.
The Top 40 were then sent to the Aulani Resort in Hawaii which, like ABC, is owned by Disney, to sing again for the three judges. The episode that showcases the Top 40 performances, which was taped in late January,...

What happened to the sisters on American Idol? When 17-year-old Taryn Coccia auditioned in front of Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan, she brought along her big sister Payton Taylor, 20, to play guitar for her. But Taryn also caught the judges' eyes and she was allowed to audition as well, and even though both sisters have very different styles and voices, their individual talents earned them each a golden ticket to Hollywood. But fans won't be seeing Taryn or Payton advance in the competition and they both took to Instagram on Sunday, April 1 to explain why. "I’m so sorry to disappoint. You won’t be seeing [Payton] and I on [American Idol] tonight," Taryn wrote on Instagram. "Although we received our golden tickets to Hollywood, we decided that we want to drive our own careers in the direction we want." A post shared by Taryn Coccia (@taryncoccia) on Apr 1, 2018 at 5:...

“American Idol” contestant Britney Holmes may have been told “no” by the judges on Monday night’s episode, but thanks to a twist, she’s back on the show. Earlier this year Holmes was one of three eliminated contestants who were spotlighted during ABC’s airing of the American Music Awards. Audiences got to vote for which artist they wanted to see go through to Hollywood, and Britney received the most votes. Thus, even though Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan sent her home on Monday night, audiences will be seeing her again.

In his recap of Monday’s audition, our live-blogger Denton Davidson wrote, “Britney Holmes is a vocal coach who is inspired by her father and ’90s-era singers like Whitney Houston. She’s taking on ‘I Have Nothing,’ a song that has humiliated countless singing competition castoffs. Britney’s version was just okay.

Monday night on “American Idol,” two sisters got golden tickets to Hollywood, but not without judge Katy Perry stirring up a bit of sibling rivalry. Pop singer Taryn Coccia (17) auditioned with Jessie J‘s “Masterpiece” while her country artist sister Payton Taylor (20) played guitar, but before the judges could give their critiques Katy asked Payton if she also wanted to sing. Payton was hesitant at first, then earned rave reviews after she performed John Prine‘s “Angel from Montgomery.” Are you happy with the judges’ decision to send Both “American Idol” sisters to Hollywood? Vote in our poll below.

“Anymore sisters and brothers?” asked Lionel Richie after Taryn and Payton both finished singing. “This could be a family affair. I think that the talent is in the family. I must tell you that [being] sisters you have two unique voices.”

Remember that episode of Full House where D.J. auditions for a cereal commercial, only to have it inadvertently stolen out from under her by Stephanie?
That’s the situation American Idol nearly found itself in on Monday when Katy Perry and Lionel Richie asked 20-year-old Payton Taylor — who only attended the auditions to play back-up guitar for her sister, 18-year-old Taryn Coccia — to step up to the spotlight and take her own shot at stardom.
Fortunately, Idol‘s version of this story ended with both sisters getting golden tickets, but methinks the drama is far from over. I’ve...
