- He was granted a posthumous pardon in 1993, forty years after he was executed, and his murder conviction was quashed entirely five years after.
- He was portrayed by Christopher Eccleston in the film Let Him Have It (1991).
- He was held accountable for the death of PC Sydney Miles as his accomplice Christopher Craig, who killed Miles after Bentley was in police custody, was sixteen and couldn't be tried for murder.
- The murder case which led to his death hinged around him shouting "let him have it, Chris" which led to debate as to wheter he was calling for Christopher Craig to surrender his weapon or to fire it at PC Sydney Miles who was about to arrest him. Debate as to the intent behind his words exist to this day.
- He is believed to have been developmentally disabled as, after taking IQ tests, he was described as "borderline feeble-minded", with a verbal score of 71, a performance IQ of 87 and a full scale IQ of 77.
