What’s a reality show without some controversy? Sunday’s Top 20 episode of “American Idol,” during which 10 contestants were paired with celebrity artists, offered a doozy. According the social media jury, a vocal flub made by singer Elle King, the daughter of comic actor Rob Schneider whose own big hit is “Ex’s and Oh’s,” might have contributed to ex-ing out Atlanta semi-finalist Shawn Robinson‘s chances to continue on the show.
Robinson admitted he did have some reservations about their duet selection, a golden oldie that was originally a mid-tempo 1969 signature tune for Creedence Clearwater Revival that was famously turned into a raucus 1971 R&B hit by Ike and Tina Turner. He wanted to do the slower version and got his way, but it barely mattered when King seemed to accidentally sing the first verse twice on-air and might have cause a rattled Shawn, 22, to come in too soon.

We laughed. We cried. We laughed some more. Thanks, Katy Perry!
The “American Idol” finale may have been a little lackluster in terms of star power, but the judge in the middle seat — when she could endure sitting in it for more than a minute — more than made up for it. Whether it was begging Bachelorette contender Becca Kufrin for her hand — and a chance to compete on the ABC show — or spinning herself silly after the revelation that Caleb Lee Hutchinson and Maddie Poppe are now a couple, or mock fawning over hottie Trevor Holmes, who showed up again in a cute video sendup of Richle’s “Hello” with Ada Vox and Noah Davis, between Perry’s snappy retorts, her physical comedy or her pop culture know-how, there was not a dull moment.

This week on “American Idol,” five singers — Layla Spring, Dominique, Brandon Diaz, Kay Kay and Trevor McBane — were eliminated just prior to making the Season 16 live shows. Judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan made the tough decisions after seeing them all perform as solo singers and in duets with professional artists. Hours after the elimination episode aired on ABC, Perry Tweeted this emotional message to the five home-bound singers:
“Just because your #americanidol journey has ended, please don’t let it discourage you. Keep singing, keep following your dreams! Trust and believe I heard no 1,786 times before I heard yes.”

On the April 9 episode of “American Idol,” Ryan Seacrest revealed that only seven of the dozen singers were moving on to the live shows. This meant that five contestants in Group 1 of the Top 24 saw their dreams of winning season 16 end. Which of these artists do you think was wrongly eliminated and was most deserving of a place in the Top 14? Vote in our poll below and then sound off in the comments section.
In episodes taped weeks ago, the remaining two dozen artists from the Top 50 had been split into two groups. Each of those Top 24 contestants had to perform both solo and in duets with celebrities in front of judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie. That trio of talent then determined if each contestant deserved a place in the Top 14.

On Monday night’s (April 9) “American Idol,” celebrity duets brought together hopefuls with their mentors — Andy Grammer, Bishop Briggs, Luis Fonsi, Pat Monahan, Aloe Blacc, Allen Stone and Sugarland, among them — and several of the contestants more than held their own.
“I don’t know how to critique anymore,” Katy Perry said just a half hour into the show. “Everybody is arriving and showing up.” Except, of course, for the five singers who would be leaving the competition.
The show started with a bang as Catie Turner teamed up with Grammer, gushing “Omg, you could be my uncle or something!” There’s something quite endearing about how Turner doesn’t give a damn, even after Grammer warned her about nerves. Their duet of “Good to be Alive (Hallelujah)” was exuberant and fun, earning praise from judge Lionel Richie, who told her, “You killed it.”

Monday’s American Idol paired the first wave of Season 16’s Top 24 with some of the biggest names in music — before thinning the herd with five dream-crushing eliminations.
Before we break down all 12 of tonight’s duets, here are the five singers booted from the competition this evening:
* Trevor McBane
* Layla Spring
* Dominique
* Brandon Diaz
* Kay Kay
That means Cade Foehner, Michelle Sussett, Dennis Lorenzo, Gabby Barrett, Jonny Brenns, Michael J. Woodard and Catie Turner (phew!) are moving forward. Honestly, I have no complaints with these results. Like, I wish I had more to say, but I genuinely believe the best collection of humans remain.

The show might not go on after all! The American Idol reboot is in jeopardy of being canceled because ratings aren't exactly what the network had hoped for. A source exclusively told In Touch, "Many believe it has to do with the sexual misconduct allegations against Ryan Seacrest." Ryan has vehemently denied the accusations against him made by a former stylist who claimed that he would grind his erect penis against her while in his underwear, groped her, and slapped her buttocks. He has since been cleared by NBC, yet his reputation still seems to be a bit tarnished. (Photo Credit: Getty Images) And Ryan is not the only one contributing to the show's questionable future. Celebrity judge Katy Perry — who was paid $25 million for the gig — has also been a big factor as "her flirty behavior with contestants is a turnoff and key element of the ratings decline." The...

When Layla Spring arrived at her American Idol audition, she immediately captured the hearts of judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan. Monday night’s “American Idol” (April 2) delivered the final judgement, with judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan narrowing down the contestants from 50 to 24. One by one, each singer had to look fate in the eyes, and with that came several shocking eliminations.
First on the stage was 16-year old Layla Spring, who bravely took on the Ike and Tina Turner classic “Proud Mary.” Although Bryan said the judges were nervous about putting a teenager through, Spring’s vibrato improved (a directive Perry instructed her to work on), and she made it to the top 24.
Michael Woodward, who seemed so green during auditions, had clearly blossomed in the weeks that followed. On Sunday night’s show, he impressed with the song choice of “Maybe This Time” from “Cabaret,” and on Monday he picked an equally risky tune, “You Oughta Know” by Alanis Morissette. Although it wasn’t the strongest selection for Woodward,...

On Sunday night’s show, he impressed with the song choice of “Maybe This Time” from “Cabaret,” and on Monday he picked an equally risky tune, “You Oughta Know” by Alanis Morissette. On the April 2 episode of “American Idol,” the 50 contestants to survive Hollywood Week will be winnowed down to less than half that when Ryan Seacrest reveals the Top 24. As with the Fox version that ran for 15 seasons, this revival on ABC gave a slew of those who auditioned golden tickets to Hollywood. A whopping 169 made the trip to sing again for the three judges – pop princess Katy Perry, country superstar Luke Bryan and Oscar-winning singer/songwriter Lionel Richie .
At the end of the April 1 episode, we learned which 50 would get one more chance to impress. The 26 men and 24 women took to the stage at the Exchange club in downtown Los Angeles on Feb. 8. We will see highlights from these performances over the course of two hours. At the end of the evening, we will know the Top 24 who will then be judged on both solo performances and celebrity duets over...

The revival of “American Idol” on ABC is following the same format as did on Fox for 15 seasons. On the April 2 episode, host Ryan Seacrest will reveal the Top 24 contestants, who will then fight it out over four episodes for a place in the live shows that start on April 22. These two dozen hopefuls were culled from the Top 50 that were revealed on the April 1 episode. To cut this number by more than half, the three judges — Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie — had the contestants sing again.

After a two-year break “American Idol” is back for season 16. This time around the reality competition series may air on ABC but it is following the same format as the 15 seasons that ruled the ratings on Fox. While Ryan Seacrest is back as host, the three judges are new: pop princess Katy Perry, country superstar Luke Bryan and Oscar-winning singer/songwriter Lionel Richie
They gave a whopping 169 contestants tickets to Hollywood at their auditions, which were spread out over five cities: New York, NY, New Orleans, La, Nashville, Tn, Savannah, Ga and Los Angeles, CA. Appropriately enough, these try-outs aired over the first five episodes of the season. The hopefuls were winnowed down to just 50 in three rounds as they sung in lines of 10, groups, and solos. The first of these Hollywood Week episodes aired on March 26 and April 1.
The Top 50 then gathered at Exchange in downtown Los Angeles on Feb.
